Mechanical and metallurgical effects of in process cooling during friction stir welding of AA7075-T6 butt joints

2010

This paper presents the results of a combined experimental and numerical investigation focused on the effects of an in process water cooling treatment aimed at improving the final quality of friction stir welded butt joints in terms of mechanical resistance and metallurgy of the processed material. Micro and macro observations, together with the evolution of an already developed finite element tool, have been used to analyze specimens obtained under different process conditions. Water cooling was found to enhance joint strength, reducing the material softening usually observed in the thermo-mechanically affected zone area, with no detrimental effect on nugget integrity.

Relating morphology to nanoscale mechanical properties: from crystalline to mesomorphic iPP

2005

Abstract A nanoindentation technique using an atomic force microscope (AFM) was applied to characterize the mechanical behaviour of several isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples. The samples were solidified from the melt with a CCT (continuous cooling transformation) procedure spanning a wide range of cooling rates thanks to a fast quenching apparatus developed by the authors. The influence of instrumental parameters on the nanoscale mechanical properties (indentation depth, Young's modulus) shows that for modulus determination one has to rely on simpler methods of force curve analysis based on trace curve alone. Structure homogeneity up to the scale of macroscopic samples used to evaluate …

Mechanocaloric effects in superionic thin films from atomistic simulations

2017

Solid-state cooling is an energy-efficient and scalable refrigeration technology that exploits the adiabatic variation of a crystalline order parameter under an external field (electric, magnetic, or mechanic). The mechanocaloric effect bears one of the greatest cooling potentials in terms of energy efficiency owing to its large available latent heat. Here we show that giant mechanocaloric effects occur in thin films of well-known families of fast-ion conductors, namely Li-rich (Li3OCl) and type-I (AgI), an abundant class of materials that routinely are employed in electrochemistry cells. Our simulations reveal that at room temperature AgI undergoes an adiabatic temperature shift of 38 K un…

Dynamics of sorbitol and maltitol over a wide time-temperature range

1999

The relaxation behaviour of two molecular glass-forming systems, namely sorbitol and maltitol, are investigated in the large temperature range relevant to the glass-transition. These data are obtained by combining three techniques, i.e. low-frequency mechanical spectroscopy, medium and high frequency dielectric spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements. This procedure allows to determine the relaxation map of these polyols on a wide time range [10-9-107 s]. Two different relaxation processes can be observed. The principal α-relaxation process exhibits a complex behaviour, comprising a non-Arrhenius temperature dependence above T g (supercooled liquid state), and an Arrhenius behaviour below …

Wide Temperature Operation of 40-Gb/s 1550-nm Electroabsorption Modulated Lasers

2006

Electroabsorption modulated lasers (EMLs) exploiting the quantum confined Stark effect need thermoelectric coolers to achieve stable output power levels and dynamic extinction ratios. Temperature-independent operation is reported between 20/spl deg/C and 70/spl deg/C for InGaAlAs-InP-based monolithically integrated 1550-nm EMLs exploiting a shared active area at 40 Gb/s by actively controlling the electroabsorption modulator bias voltage. Dynamic extinction ratios of at least 8 dB and fiber-coupled mean modulated optical power of at least 0.85 mW are obtained over the mentioned temperature range.

Assessing Radiation Hardness of SIC MOS Structures

2018

It is widely known that devices based on wide gap semiconductors show potential benefits in terms of saving mass, increasing power densities compared with standard Silicon ones [1]. The higher operating temperatures these components can withstand can also reduce the power budget currently used for cooling down power electronics. These factors are critical in space applications where, for example SiC devices are very promising. However, in this field reliability is a paramount requirement, and radiation conditions can compromise the usage of these new technologies.

Residual stresses in friction stir welded parts of complex geometry

2011

Residual stresses play a key role on the mechanics underlying the fatigue crack growth propagation of welded joints. Indeed, compressive residual stresses may induce a beneficial enhancement of the fatigue life under loading condition whereas tensile residual stresses may act to increase the stress distribution at crack tip, resulting in a life-threatening condition of the welded structure. In-process distortion and final geometry of welded joints are also affected by residual stresses. In this paper, the longitudinal residual stress distributions in friction stir welding (FSW) joints were investigated for butt and skin–stringer geometries, including lap and T configurations. To measure res…

Integrated SINIS refrigerators for efficient cooling of cryogenic detectors

2002

In this paper we report recent results obtained with large area superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junction coolers. With the devices we have successfully demonstrated electronic cooling from 260 mK to 80 mK with a cooling power of 20 pW at 80 mK. At present, we are focusing on obtaining similar performance in cooling cryogenic detectors. Additionally, we present recent results of successful operation of a metalsemiconductor structure with a Schottky barrier acting as the tunnel barrier and the possibility to use this kind of structures for on-chip cooling.

Laser frequency stabilization by magnetically assisted rotation spectroscopy

2011

Abstract We present a method of Doppler-free laser frequency stabilization based on magnetically assisted rotation spectroscopy (MARS) which combines the Doppler-free velocity-selective optical pumping (VSOP) and magnetic rotation spectroscopy. The stabilization is demonstrated for the atomic rubidium transitions at 780 nm. The proposed method is largely independent of stray magnetic fields and does not require any modulation of the laser frequency. Moreover, the discussed method allows one to choose between locking the laser exactly to the line center, or with a magnetically-controlled shift to an arbitrary frequency detuned by up to several natural linewidths. This feature is useful in ma…

Electron refrigeration in hybrid structures with spin-split superconductors

2017

Electron tunneling between superconductors and normal metals has been used for an efficient refrigeration of electrons in the latter. Such cooling is a nonlinear effect and usually requires a large voltage. Here we study the electron cooling in heterostructures based on superconductors with a spin-splitting field coupled to normal metals via spin-filtering barriers. The cooling power shows a linear term in the applied voltage. This improves the coefficient of performance of electron refrigeration in the normal metal by shifting its optimum cooling to lower voltage, and also allows for cooling the spin-split superconductor by reverting the sign of the voltage. We also show how tunnel couplin…
