"Save Private Pinna !" The Mediterranean fan mussel, a patrimonial bivalve, is in serious danger of extinction.
2019
Pinna nobilis is the largest bivalve in the Mediterranean Sea. This endemic species lives in the Posidonia meadows,in the form of small sparse populations. It is a heritage species: its byssus has long been collected to be wovenand used to make gloves, hats or stoles. Protected by a European Directive (1992), P. nobilis is closely monitored, nationally and internationally. But since the end of 2016, an epidemic, which origin seems to be a protozoan parasite, decimates populations (up to 100% mortality). This event began on the Spanish coast and spreads now all around theMediterranean. Although conservation measures have been taken, the next few years could see the extinction of thisemblematic…
Physiological advantages of dwarfing in surviving extinctions in high-CO2 oceans
2015
Excessive CO 2 in the present-day ocean-atmosphere system is causing ocean acidification, and is likely to cause a severe biodiversity decline in the future, mirroring effects in many past mass extinctions. Fossil records demonstrate that organisms surviving such events were often smaller than those before, a phenomenon called the Lilliput effect. Here, we show that two gastropod species adapted to acidified seawater at shallow-water CO 2 seeps were smaller than those found in normal pH conditions and had higher mass-specific energy consumption but significantly lower whole-animal metabolic energy demand. These physiological changes allowed the animals to maintain calcification and to parti…
Two-step nilpotent Leibniz algebras
2022
In this paper we give a complete classification of two-step nilpotent Leibniz algebras in terms of Kronecker modules associated with pairs of bilinear forms. In particular, we describe the complex and the real case of the indecomposable Heisenberg Leibniz algebras as a generalization of the classical $(2n+1)-$dimensional Heisenberg Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}_{2n+1}$. Then we use the Leibniz algebras - Lie local racks correspondence proposed by S. Covez to show that nilpotent real Leibniz algebras have always a global integration. As an application, we integrate the indecomposable nilpotent real Leibniz algebras with one-dimensional commutator ideal. We also show that every Lie quandle integr…
Plant-wide modelling in wastewater treatment: showcasing experiences using the Biological Nutrient Removal Model
2020
Abstract Plant-wide modelling can be considered an appropriate approach to represent the current complexity in water resource recovery facilities, reproducing all known phenomena in the different process units. Nonetheless, novel processes and new treatment schemes are still being developed and need to be fully incorporated in these models. This work presents a short chronological overview of some of the most relevant plant-wide models for wastewater treatment, as well as the authors' experience in plant-wide modelling using the general model BNRM (Biological Nutrient Removal Model), illustrating the key role of general models (also known as supermodels) in the field of wastewater treatment…
COLLECTIVE SPIN EXCITATIONS OF ALKALI-METAL CLUSTERS
1993
The response function of alkali-metal clusters, modeled as jellium spheres, to dipole (L=1) and quadrupole (L=2) spin-dependent fields is obtained within the time-dependent local-spin-density approximation of density-functional theory. We predict the existence of low-energy spin modes of surface type, which are identified from the strength function. Their collectivity and evolution with size are discussed.
Fabric transitions from shell accumulations to reefs: an introduction with Palaeozoic examples
2007
One unresolved conceptual problem in some Palaeozoic sedimentary strata is the boundary between the concepts of ‘shell concentration’ and ‘reef’. In fact, numerous bioclastic strata are transitional coquina–reef deposits, because either distinct frame-building skeletons are not commonly preserved in growth position, or skeletal remains are episodically encrusted by ‘stabilizer’ (reef-like) organisms, such as calcareous and problematic algae, encrusting microbes, bryozoans, foraminifers and sponges. The term ‘parabiostrome’, coined by Kershaw, can be used to describe some stratiform bioclastic deposits formed through the growth and destruction, by fair-weather wave and storm wave action, of …
Insight Into The Spin-Vibronic Problem of a Mixed Valence Magnetic Molecular Cell for Quantum Cellular Automata.
2021
The effects of the vibronic coupling in quantum cellular automata (QCA) based on the square planar mixed valence (MV) molecular cells comprising four paramagnetic centers (spin cores) and two excess mobile electrons are analyzed in the important particular case when the Coulomb energy gap between the ground antipodal diagonal-type two-electron configurations and the excited side-type configurations considerably exceeds both the one-electron transfer parameter (strong U-limit) and the vibronic stabilization energy. Under such conditions the developed model involves the second-order double exchange, the Heisenberg-Dirac-Van Vleck (HDVV) exchange and the vibronic coupling of the excess electro…
