New Contributions toPseudonapomyza(Diptera: Agromyzidae) from Spain: Addition of Three New Species

The genus Pseudonapomyza (Diptera: Agromyzidae) includes the main leafminer pests for monocots. Three new species are described that were captured using Malaise traps in "Tinença de Benifassà", "Font Roja" and "Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja" (Spain) Natural Parks: Pseudonapomyza curvata n. sp., P. longitata n. sp., and P. sicicornis n. sp. Systematics. Ecological data are discussed.

Imaging Quality of Bifocal Piggyback Intraocular Lens versus ReSTOR and TECNIS Multifocal Lenses

Purpose The imaging quality provided by a piggyback integrated by a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) + a bifocal IOL of zero power and +3.75 diopters of addition is compared with the optics quality of a simple multifocal IOL of the same power and addition. Methods The imaging quality was evaluated by determining the modulation transfer function (MTF), using an artificial eye simulating in vivo conditions of the anterior chamber, including an artificial cornea and a wet cell containing physiologic solution where the IOL was positioned. Origin and age of Australian Chenopodiaceae

Abstract We studied the age, origins, and possible routes of colonization of the Australian Chenopodiaceae. Using a previously published rbc L phylogeny of the Amaranthaceae–Chenopodiaceae alliance (Kadereit et al. 2003) and new ITS phylogenies of the Camphorosmeae and Salicornieae, we conclude that Australia has been reached in at least nine independent colonization events: four in the Chenopodioideae, two in the Salicornieae, and one each in the Camphorosmeae, Suaedeae, and Salsoleae. Study of two midgut aminopeptidases from Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner

Aminopeptidases N (APNs) have been identified as Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxins receptor candidates in several Lepidopteran species. Employing the RACE PCR technique we obtained two complete cDNAs corresponding to two APNs expressed in the midgut of Ostrinia nubilalis larvae. One of the sequences was 3624 bp long, and the predicted protein was composed by 940 aminoacids, whereas the other cDNA was 3226 nucleotides long, leading a putative protein composed by 994 aminoacids. As its method, philosophy uses argumentative discussion. Philosophy does not often appeal directly to observations or experiences, although they have a place in argumentation as well. Because philosophy is discursive, it delves in the realms of language and the use of language. Defining concepts is a central theme. Stain-free virtual histology of Bombus terrestris compound eyes by laboratory phase-contrast nano-CT

The visual systems of pollinating insects are studied to understand the effects of a changing environment, and are to date imaged using microscopy or micro-CT. Microscopy only allows two-dimensional imaging and conventional micro-CT requires heavy-metal staining of the samples. Here we present virtual histology of compound eyes of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) using a laboratory nano-CT system. Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a congenital disorder characterized by distinctive facial features, growth retardation, limb abnormalities, intellectual disability, and behavioral problems. Cornelia de Lange syndrome is associated with abnormalities on chromosomes 5, 10 and X. Heterozygous point mutations in three genes (<em>NIPBL</em>, <em>SMC3</em> and <em>SMC1A</em>), are responsible for approximately 50-60% of CdLS cases. Controlled iontophoretic release of glucocorticoids through epithelial cell monolayers

In the present study the iontophoretic transdermal delivery of three different glucocorticoids through a confluent monolayer of MDCK cells, mimicking biological barriers, was studied. For this experiment an in vitro model with platinum electrodes for iontophoresis and MDCK cells was developed. With this model investigations concerning the biocompatibility of the cells depending on different current densities and the iontophoretic permeation of the three glucocorticoids through the cell monolayer were carried out.
