Acute endothelial failure after cosmetic iris implants (NewIris®)

We report a case of an acute endothelial failure after the implantation of a new cosmetic, colored, artificial iris diaphragm implant called NewIris(®). A 21-year-old woman came to us complaining of progressive loss of vision and pain after NewIris lenses had been implanted. Decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, and increased intraocular pressure in both eyes appeared only 3 weeks after the surgery. The lenses were removed as soon as possible but had already severely affected the endothelial cell count. NewIris implants are an alternative to cosmetic contact lenses, but they are not as safe as other phakic anterior chamber intraocular lenses, nor are they a good option for the patient.

Background: No biomechanical study has been performed analyzing the merits of reconstructing the popliteofibular ligament (PFL) through a tibial tunnel with an anatomic reconstruction of the posterolateral knee. Hypothesis: There is no difference in an anatomic posterolateral knee reconstruction with or without a PFL reconstruction placed through a tibial tunnel in restoring knee motion to the intact, uninjured state, and the knee is not overconstrained with this reconstruction. Background During the UVA-cross-linking treatment in keratoconus patients, the UVA rays are partially absorbed in the stroma of the riboflavin-loaded cornea. This effect protects the corneal endothelium from UVA irradiation damage. The intensity of UVA light reaching the endothelium is inversely correlated with corneal thickness. To study the proteolytic phenomena contributing to the pathogenesis of keratoconus, corneal enzymes with potential to cleave fibrillar collagen were studied.Immunohistochemical labeling was undertaken of conventional and novel mammalian collagenases (MMP-1, -2, -8, -13, and -14) of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family and other collagenolytic proteinases of the serine (human trypsin-2) and cysteine (cathepsin K) endoproteinase families. Purpose: To assess the visual quality achieved by fitting corneo-scleral contact lenses (CScL) for keratoconus management. Methods: Thirty patients with keratoconus presented to have CScL fitted because of the unsatisfactory visual quality they experienced with their contact lenses or spectacles.
