Clinical guidelines for diagnosing and managing ocular manifestations in children with mucopolysaccharidosis.
2011
The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders characterized by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in several tissues and organs. This accumulation results in an array of clinical manifestations and premature death in severe cases. Ocular problems are very common in children with MPS and may involve the cornea, sclera, trabecular meshwork, retina, optic nerve and also the posterior visual pathways. The aims of this study are to give an overview of ocular problems in MPS and to provide clinical guidelines for paediatric ophthalmologists for early diagnosis and management of ocular manifestations in children with MPS. Diagnostic problems may arise in child…
Propolis-Based Nanofiber Patches to Repair Corneal Microbial Keratitis
2021
In this research, polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)/gelatin (GEL)/propolis (Ps) biocompatible nanofiber patches were fabricated via electrospinning technique. The controlled release of Propolis, surface wettability behaviors, antimicrobial activities against the S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, and biocompatibility properties with the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were investigated in detail. By adding 0.5, 1, and 3 wt.% GEL into the 13 wt.% PVA, the morphological and mechanical results suggested that 13 wt.% PVA/0.5 wt.% GEL patch can be an ideal matrix for 3 and 5 wt.% propolis addition. Morphological results revealed that the diameters of the electrospun nanofiber patches were increased with GEL (from…
Filodemo, Cicerone, Nepote: a proposito del contesto storico-culturale di Oec. Col. XXII.9-48
2018
Until recently, Philodemus’ treatise On Household Management (Περὶ οἰκονομίας, PHerc. 1424) has been mainly used as a source for the reconstruction of early Epicurean economic thought (especially of Metrodorus’ writing Περὶ πλούτου). Over the past few years, however, scholars have called attention to Philodemus’ creative (yet philosophically orthodox) readaptation of Epicurean ethical and social theories to the needs of contemporary Roman society. Following this scholarly line, the present paper reassesses a passage from On Household Management (col. XXII.9–48) which has so far been interpreted as an unoriginal repetition of Metrodorus’ arguments, and situates it in the cultural context of …

Modulation transfer function of a toric intraocular lens: evaluation of the changes produced by rotation and tilt.
2011
PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in optical quality when toric intraocular lenses (IOL) are rotated or tilted and to demonstrate that IOL rotation produces an increasing effect of aberrations. METHODS: Modulation transfer function (MTF) and average modulation were used to analyze the image quality of a toric IOL. The axis of the toric IOL was rotated 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30° in successive MTF measurements. The tilt values were 0° to 5°, in increments of 1°, plus a tilt of 15°. Pupil diameters of 3 and 5 mm were used. RESULTS: The MTF decay due to aberrations was more sensitive to rotation than tilt. The main decrement in the average modulation, of approximately 50% in both pupils, o…
A new method to measure the wavelength of single-mode pulsed lasers with a scanning Michelson interferometer
1994
We report on the possibility to measure the wave-lengths of pulsed single-mode lasers by means of a two-beam Michelson interferometer in motion [1,2]. The corner reflector moves with a nearly constant speed creating a path differenceL so thatL/C ≪ 1/Δν, Δν being the spectral width of the laser to be measured. The reference laser is a stabilized He-Ne (Spectra-Physics, model 117 A) to a precision of the order of two parts in 109. The fringe pattern of the two beams (reference beam and measured beam) is sampled simultaneously with a repetition rate of 40 ms. With this new method, the frequency doubled injection-seeded Nd: YAG laser wavelength has been measured with an accuracy of the order of…
Repeatability of whole-cornea measurements using a new swept-source optical coherence tomographer
2020
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the repeatability of several corneal parameters provided by a high-resolution swept-source optical coherence tomographer (SS-OCT). Methods: One eye from each of 74 patients was measured five times consequently using the ANTERION SS-OCT. The following corneal parameters were analyzed: average, steep and flat keratometry (K), astigmatism for anterior, posterior and total at 3-mm, average K and astigmatism at 6-mm, anterior and posterior eccentricity, higher-order aberrations (HOA) and spherical aberration ([Formula: see text]), and anterior and posterior best-fit sphere at 8-mm. The intrasubject standard deviation (Sw), coefficient of variation (…
Orbscan Pachymetry: Differences between observers when carrying out measurements of the corneal thickness
2005
Nanoencapsulation in Lipid-Core Nanocapsules Controls Mometasone Furoate Skin Permeability Rate and Its Penetration to the Deeper Skin Layers
2013
<b><i>Aims:</i></b> The influence of nanoencapsulation of mometasone furoate (MF) in poly(ε-caprolactone) lipid-core nanocapsules (LNC) on its in vitro human skin permeation and penetration was evaluated. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Semisolid formulations were prepared by increasing the viscosity of LNC using a carbomer (Carbopol® Ultrez at 0.5% w/v). Two complementary techniques (the static Franz diffusion cell model and the Saarbrücken penetration model) were used to evaluate skin permeation/penetration. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The drug release rate was decreased by nanoencapsulation. The skin permeability of MF was control…
Midbrain vs. pontine medial longitudinal fasciculus lesions: The utilization of masseter and blink reflexes
1991
Masseter (MR) and blink reflexes (BL) were investigated in 51 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) due to multiple sclerosis (28) and lacunar infarction (23). The MR was abnormal in 20 of 23 cases with bilateral INO and in 21 of 28 with unilateral INO. The R1 component of the BL (BL-R1) was abnormal in 7 of 23 patients with bilateral INO and 10 of 28 with unilateral INO. Combined MR and BL-R1 changes occurred in 8 of 28 cases with unilateral INO and 7 of 23 with bilateral INO. The findings provide evidence for a rostral/caudal localization of lesions within the medial longitudinal fasciculus causing INO on the basis of MR and BL-R1 abnormalities. An abnormality limited to MR sug…
