A Hard X-Ray View of Scorpius X-1 with INTEGRAL : Nonthermal Emission?

2006

We present here simultaneous INTEGRAL/RXTE observations of Sco X-1, and in particular a study of the hard X-ray emission of the source and its correlation with the position in the Z-track of the X-ray color-color diagram. We find that the hard X-ray (above about 30 keV) emission of Sco X-1 is dominated by a power-law component with a photon index of ~3. The flux in the power-law component slightly decreases when the source moves in the color-color diagram in the sense of increasing inferred mass accretion rate from the horizontal branch to the normal branch/flaring branch vertex. It becomes not significantly detectable in the flaring branch, where its flux has decreased by about an order of…

Teatri di passaggio. Corpi e storie nel paesaggio

2018

Hemocyanin conformational changes associated with SDS-induced phenol oxidase activation.

2007

The enzymatic activity of phenoloxidase is assayed routinely in the presence of SDS. Similar assay conditions elicit phenoloxidase activity in another type 3 copper protein, namely hemocyanin, which normally functions as an oxygen carrier. The nature of the conformational changes induced in type 3 copper proteins by the denaturant SDS is unknown. This comparative study demonstrates that arthropod hemocyanins can be converted from being an oxygen carrier to a form which exhibits phenoloxidase activity by incubation with SDS, with accompanying changes in secondary and tertiary structure. Structural characterisation, using various biophysical methods, suggests that the micellar form of SDS is …

Mn(II) complexes of scorpiand-like ligands. A model for the MnSOD active centre with high in vitro and in vivo activity

2015

Manganese complexes of polyamines consisting of an aza-pyridinophane macrocyclic core functionalised with side chains containing quinoline or pyridine units have been characterised by a variety of solution techniques and single crystal x-ray diffraction. Some of these compounds have proved to display interesting antioxidant capabilities in vitro and in vivo in prokaryotic (bacteria) and eukaryotic (yeast and fish embryo) organisms. In particular, the Mn complex of the ligand containing a 4-quinoline group in its side arm which, as it happens in the MnSOD enzymes, has a water molecule coordinated to the metal ion that shows the lowest toxicity and highest functional efficiency both in vitro …

Molecular recognition of nucleotides in water by scorpiand-type receptors based on nucleobase discrimination.

2014

Abstract: The detection of nucleotides is of crucial impor-tance because they are the basic building blocks of nucleicacids. Scorpiand-based polyamine receptors functionalizedwith pyridine or anthracene units are able to form stablecomplexes with nucleotides in water, based on coulombic,p–p stacking, and hydrogen-bonding interactions. This be-havior has been rationalized by means of an explorationwith NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. Binding con-stants were determined by potentiometry. Fluorescencespectroscopy studies have revealed the potential of these re-ceptors as sensors to effectively and selectively distinguishguanosine-5’-triphosphate (GTP) from adenosine-5’-triphos-phate (ATP…

Inhibition of mechanical activity by neurotensin in rat proximal colon: involvement of nitric oxide.

1997

The aim of the present study was to define the nature of inhibitory action of neurotensin in rat proximal colon. Mechanical activity was detected as changes of intraluminal pressure. Neurotensin (10(-10) to 10(-7) M), in the presence of atropine (10(-6) M), guanethidine (10(-6) M), and nifedipine (10(-8) M), induced a tetrodotoxin-insensitive inhibitory effect characterized by the complete disappearance of the spontaneous phasic contractions. The inhibitory effect of neurotensin (10(-7) M) was abolished by scorpion venom (Leiurus quinquestriatus hebraeus) (10(-6) g/ml) or high K+ (40 mM KCl), whereas it persisted in the presence of omega-conotoxin GVIA, (10(-7) M). N omega-nitro-L-arginine…

Spin state, electronic structure and bonding on C-scorpionate [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] catalyst: An experimental and computational study

2020

Abstract The Fe(II) spin state in the condensed phase of [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] (tpm = [tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane]; 1) catalyst has been determined through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) at the FeL2,3-edges and NK-edge. Results indicated that in this phase a mixed singlet/triplet state is plausible. These results have been compared with the already know Fe singlet spin state of the same complex in water solution. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure and bonding mechanism of the catalyst showed that the preference for the low-spin diamagnetic ground state, strongly depends upon the ligands, the bulk solvent and the interactio…

New contribution to the systematic status of various Mediterranean scorpionfish, as inferred from a mitochondrial DNA sequence.

2014

This study investigated the molecular phylogeny of 6 Mediterranean species of scorpionfish, belonging to the Scorpaenidae and Sebastidae family. Neighbor-Joining and Maximum Parsimony phylogenetic analyse, based on 424 base pairs of partial mitochondrial DNA sequences of the 12S-rRNA gene, revealed 2 main clades. One clade is represented by the Scorpaena genera (with the species S. notata, S. porcus, and S. scrofa) and another clade consists of the genera Helicolenus, Pterois, and Scorpaenodes. The molecular phylogeny showed that the Scorpaenodes genus (sub-family Scorpaeninae) is found within the clade of the species belonging to the other two sub-families (Pteroninae and Sebastinae). This…

Pheno-morphological and agronomic diversity among Scorpiurus muricatus (Fabaceae) natural populations collected in Sicily.

2009

SUMMARYPrickly scorpion's tail (Scorpiurus muricatus L.) is a self-reseeding annual legume widely distributed in natural pastures of the Mediterranean area and appreciated by farmers for its productivity, forage quality and palatability. Twenty-eight natural populations were collected throughout Sicily in 2005; two field experiments were carried out in 2005/06 in a hilly area of the Sicilian inland to assess the genetic variation based on pheno-morphological and agronomic characters. The pheno-morphological traits observed were analysed using a principal component analysis (PCA). The first four components of PCA (eigenvalues >1) explained 0·84 of the total variation. Similarities obtaine…

Aryl-bis-(scorpiand)-aza receptors differentiate between nucleotide monophosphates by a combination of aromatic, hydrogen bond and electrostatic inte…

2014

Bis-polyaza pyridinophane scorpiands bind nucleotides in aqueous medium with 10–100 micromolar affinity, predominantly by electrostatic interactions between nucleotide phosphates and protonated aliphatic amines and assisted by aromatic stacking interactions. The pyridine-scorpiand receptor showed rare selectivity toward CMP with respect to other nucleotides, whereby two orders of magnitude affinity difference between CMP and UMP was the most appealing. The phenanthroline-scorpiand receptor revealed at pH 5 strong selectivity toward AMP with respect to other NMPs, based on the protonation of adenine heterocyclic N1. The results stress that the efficient recognition of small biomolecules with…
