Abstract The article explores Finland’s national information society strategies and uses the Finnish case as an example to identify the limitation of the so-called ‘methodological nationalism’ and to explicate the advantages of the mobility paradigm. The research material consists of the Finnish national strategies published between 1995 and 2010. The article identifies two trends from the studied strategies; a further intermingling of physical movement of objects and virtual mobility, and a tendency to reduce corporeal mobility. When does family involvement produce superior performance in SME family business?

Abstract This study analyzes how family involvement leads to high performance in SME-family businesses (SME-FB). This research considers family involvement in management and firm governance, development of family governance, firm size, generations in FB, and ownership concentration. Results show three combinations that lead to high performance: 1) a large-enough SME-FB with a family CEO and a board with significant presence of non-family directors; 2) a large-enough SME-FB in its first generation, without family government structures, and that a non-familial top managerial team runs; 3) a large-enough SME-FB with low ownership concentration and family governance structures.

International Debt Financing and Performance of Microfinance Institutions

Using data from 319 microfinance institutions (MFIs) in 68 developing countries, we study the degree to which international debt investments are related to the financial and social performances of MFIs. We find that commercial investments are mainly related to financial performance and level of professionalisation of the MFIs. The targeting of women is not a priority, even though international commercial investors target MFIs that provide small loans. Subsidised investments, however, are mainly driven by the targeting of women, while financial performance and the level of professionalisation of the MFI is not a priority.

Do board characteristics affect environmental performance? A study of EU firms

This paper explores the relationship between board characteristics and environmental performance. We adopt a triple perspective of environmental performance, focussing on emissions (waste and CO2), resource consumption (water and energy), and the implementation of environmental initiatives. The sample comprises 644 nonfinancial European Union–based companies. The data cover the period 2002 to 2017.
