Multiple Structured Light-Based Depth Sensors for Human Motion Analysis: A Review

2012

Human motion analysis is an increasingly important active research domain with various applications in surveillance, human-machine interaction and human posture analysis. The recent developments in depth sensor technology, especially with the release of the Kinect device, have attracted significant attention to the question of how to take advantage of this technology in order to achieve accurate motion tracking and action detection in marker-less approaches. In this paper, we review the benefits and limitations deriving from the adoption of structured light-based depth sensors in human motion analysis applications. Surveying the relevant literature, we have identified in calibration, interf…

Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports

2021

AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…

α-Synuclein expression levels do not significantly affect proteasome function and expression in mice and stably transfected PC12 cell lines

2004

α-Synuclein (α-syn) is a small protein of unknown function that is found aggregated in Lewy bodies, the histopathological hallmark of sporadic Parkinson disease and other synucleinopathies. Mutations in the α-syn gene and a triplication of its gene locus have been identified in early onset familial Parkinson disease. α-Syn turnover can be mediated by the proteasome pathway. A survey of published data may lead to the suggestion that overexpression of α-syn wild type, and/or their variants (A53T and A30P), may produce a decrease in proteasome activity and function, contributing to α-syn aggregation. To investigate the relationship between synuclein expression and proteasome function we have s…

Effectiveness of lingual versus labial fixed appliances in adults according to the Peer Assessment Rating index.

2019

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of lingual treatment and labial fixed appliances in the treatment of adult orthodontic patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 72 patients. The Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index was measured at the start (T0) and end (T1) of treatment. Significant differences between treatment means were determined by means of analysis of variancewith the Bonferroni correction or with the use of Fisher exact test. Results: The lingual group had a mean pretreatment age of 28.6 ± 6.7 years, and the labial group had a pretreatment age of 26.6 ± 9.5 years. This difference was statistically not significant. The mean pre- a…

Quantum control of ground-state rotational coherence in a linear molecule

2000

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the quantum control of ground-state rotational coherence in a linear molecule. A sequence of two temporally separated laser pulses creates a rotational superposition state in ${\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$ whose evolution is monitored through a polarization technique. We study the influence of the phase difference between the two pulses. We show that the overlapping of the two wave packets, produced by each pulse, gives rise to quantum interference that affects the orientational anisotropy of the sample. Because of the large number of coherently excited levels, the interference produces well-separated temporal structures, whose magnitude can …

Roughness effect on the correction factor of surface velocity for rill flows

2021

Flow velocity is one of the most important hydrodynamic variables for both channelized (rill and gullies) and interrill erosive phenomena. The dye tracer technique to measure surface flow velocity Vs is based on the measurement of the travel time of a tracer needed to cover a known distance. The measured Vs must be corrected to obtain the mean flow velocity V using a factor αv = V/Vs which is generally empirically deduced. The Vs measurement can be influenced by the method applied to time the travel of the dye-tracer and αv can vary in different flow conditions. Experiments were performed by a fixed bed small flume simulating a rill channel for two roughness conditions (sieved soil, gravel)…

Improved measurements of cross sections and asymmetries at the Z0 resonance

1994

During the 1992 running period of the LEP e+e- collider, the DELPHI experiment accumulated approximately 24 pb-1 of data at the Z0 peak. The decays into hadrons and charged leptons have been analysed to give values for the cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries which are significantly improved with respect to those previously published by the DELPHI collaboration. Incorporating these new data, more precise values for the Z0 resonance parameters are obtained from model-independent fits. The results are interpreted within the framework of the Standard Model, yielding for the top quark mass m(t) = 157(-48)+36(expt.)-20(+19)(Higgs) GeV, and for the effective mixing angle sin2 …

Holonomic Quantum Computation

2008

In this brief review we describe the idea of holonomic quantum computation. The idea of geometric phase and holonomy is introduced in a general way and we provide few examples that should help the reader understand the issues involved.

Precision measurement of the mass of the tau lepton

2014

An energy scan near the $\tau$ pair production threshold has been performed using the BESIII detector. About $24$ pb$^{-1}$ of data, distributed over four scan points, was collected. This analysis is based on $\tau$ pair decays to $ee$, $e\mu$, $eh$, $\mu\mu$, $\mu h$, $hh$, $e\rho$, $\mu\rho$ and $\pi\rho$ final states, where $h$ denotes a charged $\pi$ or $K$. The mass of the $\tau$ lepton is measured from a maximum likelihood fit to the $\tau$ pair production cross section data to be $m_{\tau} = (1776.91\pm0.12 ^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$) MeV/$c^2$, which is currently the most precise value in a single measurement.

Brachytherapy heterogeneity correction algorithm

2011
