Correlation of Pharmacological Properties of a Group of Hypolipaemic Drugs by Molecular Topology

1996

Abstract This investigation was undertaken to test the ability of the molecular connectivity model to predict the percentage of plasma protein binding, the percentage of total cholesterol reduction and oral LD50 in rats of a group of hypolipaemic drugs using multi-variable regression equations with multiple correlation coefficients, standard error of estimate, degrees of freedom, F-Snedecor function values, Mallow's CP and Student's t-test as criteria of fit. Regression analyses showed that the molecular connectivity model predicts these properties. Corresponding stability (cross validation) studies were made on the selected prediction models which confirmed their goodness of fit. The resul…

Rainfall Anomalies in the Source Region of the Nile and Their Connection with the Indian Summer Monsoon

1997

Abstract In light of the droughts and subsequent food crises that have plagued the Ethiopia–Sudan region in the course of its history, and especially during the last 3 decades, the author examines both the interannual and intraseasonal variabilities of the July–September rains and compares them to the Indian summer monsoon. Regional rainfall indexes for the region stretching from Eritrea to Lake Victoria are computed using seasonal totals for the period 1901–88. Daily data for 1982–88 are also considered. Though all these regions are only partly affected by the Indian monsoon cross-equatorial flow and although they are separated from India by an extensive dry belt (Red Sea, Somalia, west Ar…

On the nature of morphological features in phase-separated (PEO)nNaSCN mixtures: a SAXS investigation

2000

Abstract The SAXS technique is used to throw light on the morphology of phase-separated poly(ethylene oxide)n–sodium thiocyanate [(PEO)nNaSCN] mixtures. A temperature-dependent investigation is reported for (PEO)4.5NaSCN. (PEO)nNaSCN mixtures show a complex phase behaviour. At the investigated composition, a crystalline complex (CC) is formed between PEO and NaSCN. The considered composition is representative of thermodynamic states where three different phases coexist simultaneously: crystalline PEO (CPEO), amorphous PEO (APEO) and crystalline complex (CC). Various SAXS data analysis approaches are presented to understand the nature of these coexisting phases. Invariant analysis shows a bi…

International validation of the revised European Organisation for Research and treatment of cancer head and neck cancer module, the EORTC QLQ-HN43

2019

Background: We validated the new European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Head and Neck Module (EORTC QLQ-HN43). Methods: We enrolled 812 patients with head and neck cancer from 18 countries. Group 1 completed the questionnaire before therapy, and 3 and 6 months later. In group 2 (survivors), we determined test–retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's Alpha, the scale structure with confirmatory factor analysis, and discriminant validity with known-group comparisons. Results: Cronbach's alpha was >0.70 in 10 of the 12 multi-item scales. All standardized factor loadings exceeded…

Towards unsupervised analysis of second-order chromatographic data: automated selection of number of components in multivariate curve-resolution meth…

2007

A method to apply multivariate curve-resolution unattendedly is presented. The algorithm is suitable to perform deconvolution of two-way data (e.g. retrieving the individual elution profiles and spectra of co-eluting compounds from signals obtained from a chromatograph equipped with multiple-channel detection: LC-DAD or GC-MS). The method is especially adequate to achieve the advantages of deconvolution approaches when huge amounts of data are present and manual application of multivariate techniques is too time-consuming. The philosophy of the algorithm is to mimic the reactions of an expert user when applying the orthogonal projection approach--multivariate curve-resolution techniques. Ba…

So Many Variables: Joint Modeling in Community Ecology

2015

Technological advances have enabled a new class of multivariate models for ecology, with the potential now to specify a statistical model for abundances jointly across many taxa, to simultaneously explore interactions across taxa and the response of abundance to environmental variables. Joint models can be used for several purposes of interest to ecologists, including estimating patterns of residual correlation across taxa, ordination, multivariate inference about environmental effects and environment-by-trait interactions, accounting for missing predictors, and improving predictions in situations where one can leverage knowledge of some species to predict others. We demonstrate this by exa…

Prediction of chromatographic properties of organophosphorus insecticides by molecular connectivity

2000

A study is reported of the relationship between theR F values for a group of organophosphorus insecticides obtained by thin layer chromatography and a series of topological descriptors. By using multivariate regression, the corresponding connectivity functions were obtained, which had been selected on the basis of their respective statistical parameters: multiple correlation coefficient (r), standard error of estimate (s), F-Snedecor values and statistical significance (Student’s t). Regression analysis of the connectivity functions can predict the elution behaviour of any structurally similar derivative of this group of compounds with different stationary and mobile phases. Multivariate correlation measures reveal structure and strength of brain–body physiological networks at rest and during mental stress

2021

In this work, we extend to the multivariate case the classical correlation analysis used in the field of network physiology to probe dynamic interactions between organ systems in the human body. To this end, we define different correlation-based measures of the multivariate interaction (MI) within and between the brain and body subnetworks of the human physiological network, represented, respectively, by the time series of delta, theta, alpha, and beta electroencephalographic (EEG) wave amplitudes, and of heart rate, respiration amplitude, and pulse arrival time (PAT) variability. MI is computed: (i) considering all variables in the two subnetworks to evaluate overall brain–body interaction…

Vector Autoregressive Fractionally Integrated Models to Assess Multiscale Complexity in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Time Series

2020

Cardiovascular variability is the result of the activity of several physiological control mechanisms, which involve different variables and operate across multiple time scales encompassing short term dynamics and long range correlations. This study presents a new approach to assess the multiscale complexity of multivariate time series, based on linear parametric models incorporating autoregressive coefficients and fractional integration. The approach extends to the multivariate case recent works introducing a linear parametric representation of multiscale entropy, and is exploited to assess the complexity of cardiovascular and respiratory time series in healthy subjects studied during postu…
