Result and cost of hepatic chemoembolisation with drug eluting beads in 21 patients.
2012
Abstract Purpose The aim of our study was to assess the results and cost of a treatment strategy involving transarterial chemoembolisation with drug eluting beads (DEB-TACE) in patients with unresectable non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Patients and methods This study included all patients treated with DEB-TACE in our hospital between January 2009 and December 2010. All patients received DEB-TACE on demand and were evaluated after each session. Results Twenty-one patients received an average of 1.3 sessions. The median time to treatment discontinuation and median progression-free survival was 181 days and 295 days, respectively. Toxicity caused treatment discontinuation in thr…
Cardiac troponin I and T: Exploring popularity with Google Trends
2020
The implementation of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) assays and a cutoff based on the 99th cTnT percentile in the evaluation of patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome has not been uniform due to uncertain effects on health benefits and utilization of limited resources.Clinical and laboratory data from patients with chest pain or dyspnea at the emergency de¬partment (ED) were evaluated before (n = 20516) and after (n = 18485) the lowering of the hs-cTnT cutoff point from 40 ng/L to the 99th hs-cTnT percentile of 14 ng/L in February 2012. Myocardial infarction (MI) was diagnosed at the discretion of the attending clinicians responsible for the patient.Following lowerin…
Hospitalisation Cost of Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Valencia (Spain) in the Period 2009–2013: A Retrospective Descriptive Analysis
2018
Ulcers are the main cause of hospitalisation and clinical complications in patients with diabetes. We analyse the length and cost of hospital stay of patients with diabetic foot ulcers, taking into consideration that hospitalisation and, if necessary, amputation represent the greatest area of expense to the healthcare system for such patients. This analysis focuses on the treatment provided to these patients in public hospitals in the region of Valencia (Spain), registered in the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set, during the period 2009&ndash
Postoperative Costs Associated With Outcomes After Cardiac Surgery With Extracorporeal Circulation: Role of Antithrombin Levels
2012
Objective: To study the impact on postoperative costs of a patient's antithrombin levels associated with outcomes after cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation. Design: An analytic decision model was designed to estimate costs and clinical outcomes after cardiac surgery in a typical patient with low antithrombin levels (= 63.7%). The data used in the model were obtained from a literature review and subsequently validated by a panel of experts in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Setting: Multi-institutional (14 Spanish hospitals). Participants: Consultant anesthesiologists. Measurements and Main Results: A sensitivity analysis of extreme scenarios was carried out to assess the impact o…
Outpatient endovascular aortic aneurysm repair: Experience in 100 consecutive patients
2013
OBJECTIVES:: To present the safety, feasibility, costs, and patient satisfaction of outpatient endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). BACKGROUND:: Our experience in more than 1000 patients indicated that in technically uncomplicated EVAR procedures, the only need for hospitalization was for access vessel complications (bleeding or occlusion) requiring secondary procedures. These complications could always be identified within the first 3 hours after EVAR. METHODS:: Two-center retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data on 100 consecutive elective outpatient EVAR cases (Outpt EVAR). Inclusion criteria for Outpt EVAR were as follows: asymptomatic clinical state, informed consent, trav…
Do Reduced Hospital Mortality Rates Lead to Increased Utilization of Inpatient Emergency Care?:A Population-Based Cohort Study
2018
OBJECTIVES: To measure the impact of the improvement in hospital survival rates on patients' subsequent utilization of unplanned (emergency) admissions.DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING: Unplanned admissions occurring in all acute hospitals of the National Health Service in England between 2000 and 2009, including 286,027 hip fractures, 375,880 AMI, 387,761 strokes, and 9,966,246 any cause admissions.STUDY DESIGN: Population-based retrospective cohort study. Unplanned admissions experienced by patients within 28 days, 1 year, and 2 years of discharge from the index admission are modeled as a function of hospital risk-adjusted survival rates using patient-level probit and negative binomial models. …
Efficacy and Cost-Effectiveness of Dabigatran Etexilate Versus Warfarin in Atrial Fibrillation in Different Age Subgroups
2014
This study aims to estimate the cost-effectiveness of dabigatran 150 mg twice daily versus warfarin for stroke and systemic embolism risk reduction in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation initiating treatment before age 75 (<75), at or after age 75 (≥75), and the overall population (All) from a US Medicare payer perspective. Clinical event rates by age cohort with dabigatran or warfarin for safety-on-treatment and intent-to-treat populations were estimated from Randomized Evaluation of Long-Term Anticoagulation Therapy (RE-LY). An economic model was adapted using these data to evaluate the impact of starting age on clinical and economic outcomes. Costs were obtained from Medicare p…
Incidence and costs of hip fractures compared to acute myocardial infarction in the Italian population: a 4-year survey
2007
Introduction Few data are available about the incidence and costs of hip fractures in Italy. We aimed to determine the impact of hip fractures vs. acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods We studied the national hospitalization database to calculate their incidence and costs in adults aged ≥45 between 1999 and 2002. Results In 2002, there were 86,719 hip fractures with a 10.0% increase over 4 years. We observed a predominance of women (77.1%) and a strong age effect: 92.7% of patients were ≥65 years old and 80% of fractures occurred in women aged ≥75, showing a clear relationship with the incidence of osteoporosis. Hospitalizations due to AMI after 45 years of age in 1999 were only 9% hig…

Innovation in retail: influence of ICT and its impact on customer satisfaction
2017
