A homemade device for linear sucrose gradients
2008
We have developed a simple and inexpensive device to obtain linear sucrose gradients with commonly used laboratory materials--a syringe, a flask, a plastic tube, and a piece of Pongo (Play-Doh). Refractive index values measured on sucrose fractions collected using our system demonstrate both the linearity and reliability of the gradients obtained.
Financial Aspects of Cervical Disc Arthroplasty: A Narrative Review of Recent Literature
2020
Recently, there has been significant interest in understanding the cost-effectiveness of treatments in spine surgery as health care systems in the United States move toward value-based care and alternative payment models. Previous studies have shown comparable outcomes of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy fusion; however, there is a lack of consensus on the cost-effectiveness of CDA to support full adoption. Evidence of the limitations of these cost-analysis studies also exists in the literature, including industry funding, potential selection bias, and varying methods of calculating value. The goal of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the co…
Vendor lock-in problem in cloud storage
2015
Vähemmälle huomiolle on jäänyt, kuinka vaikeaa on palveluntarjoajan vaihtaminen. Palveluntarjoajan vaihtaminen aiheuttaa aina kustannuksia asiakkaalle. Tilannetta, jossa vaihtokustannukset ovat niin suuret, että ne estävät palveluntarjoajan vaihtamisen, kuvataan termillä "vendor lock-in" (toimittajaloukku). Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena on kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteel…
Financial aspects of business models : reducing costs and increasing revenues in a cloud context
2018
The emergence of cloud computing induces opportunities for software vendors and for organizations with great storage needs. Indeed, software companies have begun to adopt cloud technologies and offer their software as a service to customers instead of selling software products. As a result, their revenue models have changed, and the diversity and complexity of the resulting pricing models have created both opportunities and impediments to competition in the market. On the other hand, due to the exponentially growing volume of digital content, organizations have an increasing demand for storage and need to choose between private, public, and hybrid storage solutions. This decision requires c…
Interaction of construction costs and output in Latvia
2020
Growth of an economy is strongly linked with the growth of the construction sector. An increased construction output must influence the costs in this area. Analysis of the construction output and construction costs in Latvia for the time period since 2006 until 2017 shows an average effect. The main goal is to forecast construction costs and output in Latvia. Comparative analysis of costs and output dynamics was done, and a general trend can be proven, but heteroscedasticity is being observed. The effect of construction output on costs is limited in scale, but similar in general tendency and author offers his discussion for possible reasons for inconsistencies in construction sector changes.
Qualité et coordination économique dans les industries agroalimentaires. Analyse institutionnelle comparée de l'industrie du vin en Bourgogne, Califo…
2004
Since the 1990s, the French wine exporters have been confronted with an increasing competition from a few nations of North America and the Southern Hemisphere. Initially positioned on the medium-range, the New World Wine Producers quickly developed their positions on the whole of the segments, including those traditionally occupied by French wines under controlled label of origin (AOC). The thesis examines the link between wine marketer' quality strategies and the coordination in the chain of production. Research is carried out on two levels: that of transactions governance structures concerning fresh grape, must and bulk wine, and that of the public rules framing these transactions. Firstl…
THE COSTS AND BENEFITS OF EDUCATION – A BRIEF REVIEW
2010
Information on the profitability of investment in the educational system of Romania is now almost inexistent, so the assertion that education is, at least in words, a national priority, which, exploited, can generate sustainable economic growth and social welfare, is not founded now on any economic data. Next we perform an analysis of the current global research findings in the field, emphasizing, where necessary, the problems remained unsolved.
Communication-Efficient Federated Learning in Channel Constrained Internet of Things
2022
Federated learning (FL) is able to utilize the computing capability and maintain the privacy of the end devices by collecting and aggregating the locally trained learning model parameters while keeping the local personal data. As the most widely-used FL framework,Jederated averaging (FedAvg) suffers an expensive communication cost especially when there are large amounts of devices involving the FL process. Moreover, when considering asynchronous FL, the slowest device becomes the bottleneck for the cask effect and determines the overall latency. In this work, we propose a communication-efficient federated learning framework with partial model aggregation (CE-FedPA) algorithm to utilize comp…
Early Treatment in HCV: Is it a Cost-Effective Option from the Italian Perspective?
2016
Background: The aim of this study is to perform an economic analysis to estimate the cost-utility of the early innovative therapy in Italy for managing HCV-infected patients. Methods: The incremental cost-utility analysis was carried out to quantify the benefits of the early treatment approach in HCV subjects. A Markov simulation model including direct and indirect costs and health outcomes was developed from Italian National Healthcare Service and societal perspective. 5,000 Monte Carlo simulations were performed on two distinct scenarios: Standard of Care (SoC) which includes 14.000 Genotype 1 patients in Italy treated with innovative interferon-free in the Fibrosis stage 3 and 4 (F3-F4) v…
Which firms benefit from investments in green energy technologies? : The effect of energy costs
2019
Abstract Firms will invest in green energy technologies only if these investments have an economic pay-off. Based on unique firm-level data from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, we find that the marginal effect of investments in green energy technologies on productivity is positive only for the 19% of firms with the highest energy costs. These results have major implications for companies and policy makers regarding the design of green energy policies and incentives.
