Diverse histories, common ground and a shared future:the education of career guidance and counselling professionals in the Nordic countries
2019
The development of education programmes in career guidance and counseling (CGC) has followed different paths among the various Nordic countries. Ten CGC programmes in Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden were evaluated against the NICE curricular model. The results show that all NICE core competences are represented in the curricula. However, there is greater focus in some programmes on developing competences for individual career guidance, than on developing competences for working at organisational and societal levels. Implications for the cooperation and professionalisation of CGC within the Nordic countries are discussed as well as limitations of the NICE model. Keywo…
How to keep your staff healthy in the educational sector?
2021
The purpose of the paper is to identify risks and challenges for alternative forms of work during online classes for teaching personnel. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) affect the body’s bones, muscles, joints, ligaments/tendons, and nerves. Musculoskeletal health risk in the educational sector should be taken into consideration to ensure the safety and healthy employees, especially when online classes require a physical inactivity and a prolonged sitting in front of the computer. MSD management requires an integrated approach integrating wellbeing with a focus on prevention, recognizing physical, social and emotional influences and early intervention. Workplace wellness has been a valuable…
School Engagement and Burnout Among Students: Preparing for Work Life
2015
This chapter conceptualizes the process of school burnout, dropout and school engagement in the context of the school demands-resources model, analogous to the job demands-resources model applied in the work and health research area. Dropout from school could be viewed as one of the consequences of the burnout process. Applying the same conceptual models to both sides of the school-to-work transition brings these two areas of life closer to each other and facilitates research on this major transition. This chapter also reviews the longitudinal research on school engagement, burnout and dropout from educational careers and describes the consequences of different experiences of young people i…
Managing categories: The role of social technology in kindergarten teachers’ work to promote early intervention and integration
2021
Early intervention and integration are highly valued ideals in kindergartens in Norway. Building on two research projects informed by institutional ethnography, the authors address how kindergarten teachers ‘do’ early intervention and integration in their everyday work. They argue that this work largely revolves around managing categories, whether making categories fit people or making people fit categories. In this work, the kindergarten teachers rely on social technology that is influenced by a ‘psy-discourse’. Despite good intentions, the social technology and the professionals’ use of it ends up constructing the categories they are intended to help or ‘heal’.
Health Promotion in Schools
2015
In the past two decades, an increasing number of school-based mental health programs and services have been developed and implemented. In this overview, quantitative reviews of prevention and intervention programs targeting adolescent obesity, drug use, smoking, alcohol consumption, and aggressive and violent behaviors such as bullying are presented. Research into the effectiveness of comprehensive school health programs provides evidence of the positive influence of these programs on student health behaviors. However, conditions that initiate and maintain effective school health promotion programs depend on several school-based organizational and program implementation factors. Therefore, …

2014
This article reports findings from a phenomenographic investigation into career practitioners' understanding of competency for social media in career services. The findings can be used to develop pre-service and in-service training of …
Accelerating decoding-related skills in poor readers learning a foreign language: a computer-based intervention
2013
The results of Fast ForWord® training on English decoding-related skills were examined. Finnish fifth-grade students were identified as having reading fluency problems and poor skills in English as a foreign language learned at school and were randomly assigned to either a training group (TRG) or a control group. The TRG (n = 13) received 50 min of daily computer program-based training for a period of approximately 10 weeks. Students in the first control group (n = 11) received the school’s regular instructional programme. A second control group was composed of 14 average readers. The students’ English skills were examined in pre-test, post-test and follow-up measurements. The TRG students …

The role of guidance in student engagement with chemistry studies
2019
During recent years, the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä has made an extensive effort to support chemistry students’ first study year. The first-year curriculum includes enhanced study counselling course, intensive orientation course and support for academic study skills via a specific course. In this study, the effects of the revisions were studied by exploring the chemistry students study continuation and what factors contributed to it. In 2015 to 2017, data were collected from first-year chemistry students (n = 106), who completed a questionnaire at the beginning and at the end of their first semester. The results show that the percentage of dropout rates after t…
