Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization with chemotherapy followed by sequential IL-3 and G-CSF administration in extensively pretreated patie…

1998

Extensive pretreatment has been identified as a significant risk factor for failure of sufficient PBSC mobilization. From published data and our own experience we defined pretreatment variables which render patients at risk for not collecting at least 2.5 x 10(6) CD34-positive cells per kg bodyweight (BW). These variables were previous unsuccessful PBSC mobilization trial, previous large field radiotherapy, four or more cycles of myelosuppressive chemotherapy regimens, and combinations of extended field radiotherapy plus chemotherapy. Based on these inclusion criteria we treated 19 patients with disease-specific conventional-dose chemotherapy followed by sequential subcutaneous administrati…

Environmental conditions, air pollutants, and airway cells in runners: a longitudinal field study

2009

Runners have increased numbers of neutrophils in the airways at rest and after exercise compared with sedentary individuals. The aim of this study was to determine whether Mediterranean seasonal changes in temperature, humidity or airborne pollutants affect the airway cells of runners training outdoors in an urban environment. In nine male amateur runners, cell composition, apoptosis, and inflammatory mediators were measured in induced sputum collected at rest (baseline) and the morning after races held in the fall (21 km), winter (12 km), and summer (10 km). Concentrations of air pollutants were below the alert threshold at all times. Neutrophil differential counts tended to increase after…

Assessment of induced corneal hypoxia in diabetic patients

2002

Comparative Study Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. C. Creuzot-Garcher, Service d'Ophtalmologie, CHU, Hopital Général, 3 Rue du Faubourg Raines, BP 1519, 21033 Dijon, France. E-mail: Catherine.creuzot-garcher@chu-dijon.fr; To assess the control of corneal hydration in patients with diabetes during a contact lens-induced hypoxia. Corneal stress was induced in 15 patients with diabetes and 23 healthy patients by having them wear contact lenses for 2 hours. Pachymetries were measured and corneal parameters (percentage recovery per hour [PRPH], time for deswelling [T99%] and induced swelling [IS]) were calculated. In the mean time, tears were collected to assess the activity of…

Morphometric assessment of testicular changes in drug-related fatalities.

2000

Testicular sections of 50 deceased drug addicts were examined by light microscopy using morphometric methods and determining the extent of spermatogenesis by application of the Johnsen score count. Twenty cases of violent death served as reference sample. The study was aimed at obtaining data about the degree of germinal gland damage following the duration of the individual drug career, which was correlated to the histologic findings. Progressively reduced maturation of germinal cells, decrease of tubular diameter and height of sperm-producing epithelium were found the longer the individual case history has been. The results clearly indicated a substantial impairment of male fertility in th…

Treatment of Idiopathic Varicoceles by Transfemoral Testicular Vein Occlusion

1981

Percutaneous transfemoral occlusion of the testicular vein is a new alternative in the treatment of idiopathic varicocele. Embolization with the Gianturco coil was done on 27 patients. The occlusion was performed immediately after diagnostic phlebography. The results of followup for 1 year are available for 18 patients. In 1 patient the coil had to be removed because of persistent pain, although cause and effect could not be proved. Two patients had a recurrence. The urographic findings were normal 1 year after embolization. No dislocation of the foreign body was observed. Two patients reported that their wives were pregnant.

A Submaximal Running Test With Post-Exercise Cardiac Autonomic And Neuromuscular Function In Monitoring Endurance Training Adaptation

2016

Vesterinen, V, Nummela, A, Laine, T, Hynynen, E, Mikkola, J, and Häkkinen, K. A submaximal running test with postexercise cardiac autonomic and neuromuscular function in monitoring endurance training adaptation. J Strength Cond Res 31(1): 233-243, 2017-The aim of this study was to investigate whether a submaximal running test (SRT) with postexercise heart rate recovery (HRR), heart rate variability (HRV), and countermovement jump (CMJ) measurements could be used to monitor endurance training adaptation. Thirty-five endurance-trained men and women completed an 18-week endurance training. Maximal endurance performance and maximal oxygen uptake were measured every 8 weeks. In addition, SRTs wi…

The INTERPHONE study: design, epidemiological methods, and description of the study population

2007

The very rapid worldwide increase in mobile phone use in the last decade has generated considerable interest in the possible health effects of exposure to radio frequency (RF) fields. A multinational case-control study, INTERPHONE, was set-up to investigate whether mobile phone use increases the risk of cancer and, more specifically, whether the RF fields emitted by mobile phones are carcinogenic. The study focused on tumours arising in the tissues most exposed to RF fields from mobile phones: glioma, meningioma, acoustic neurinoma and parotid gland tumours. In addition to a detailed history of mobile phone use, information was collected on a number of known and potential risk factors for t…

Clinical outcomes after implantation of a posterior chamber collagen copolymer phakic intraocular lens with a central hole for myopic correction.

2013

Purpose To evaluate the efficacy, predictability, safety, and stability of a new-model posterior chamber Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) (V4c Visian) to correct myopia. Setting Private practice, Oviedo, Spain. Design Case series. Methods This study enrolled patients who had implantation of a new pIOL design with a central hole for more natural aqueous flow, eliminating the need for neodymium:YAG iridotomy or peripheral iridectomy. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, refractive error, intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell count, central vault, and adverse events were evaluated 6 months postoperatively. Results The study enroll…

Oligo-antigenic diet in the treatment of chronic anal fissures. Evidence for a relationship between food hypersensitivity and anal fissures.

2013

Abstract OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic constipation due to food hypersensitivity (FH) had an elevated anal sphincter resting pressure. No studies have investigated a possible role of FH in anal fissures (AFs). We aimed to evaluate (1) the effectiveness of diet in curing AFs and to evaluate (2) the clinical effects of a double-blind placebo-controlled (DBPC) challenge, using cow's milk protein or wheat. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one patients with AFs were randomized to receive a "true-elimination diet" or a "sham-elimination diet" for 8 weeks; both groups also received topical nifedipine and lidocaine. Sixty patients who were cured with the "true-elimination diet" underwent DBPC cha…
