FT-IR and dielectric study of water/AOT liquid crystals

2000

Abstract In order to explore the influence of microwave radiation on highly viscous microheterogeneous systems, the evolution of structural and dynamical properties of the water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) liquid crystals as a function of the molar ratio R (R=[water]/[AOT]) has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy and time domain reflectometry. The study emphasises how the progressive hydration of the surfactant head groups is mainly responsible for the structural and dynamical evolution of water/AOT liquid crystals. In particular, it has been found that the state of water at lower R values is strongly perturbed, bulk-like water appears only at R>23 and the water/AOT in…

Postsynthetic Approach for the Rational Design of Chiral Ferroelectric Metal–Organic Frameworks

2017

International audience; Ferroelectrics (FEs) are materials of paramount importance with a wide diversity of applications. Herein, we propose a postsynthetic methodology for the smart implementation of ferroelectricity in chiral metal−organic frameworks (MOFs): following a single-crystal to single-crystal cation metathesis, the Ca2+ counterions of a preformed chiral MOF of formula Ca6II{CuII24[(S,S)-hismox]12(OH2)3}·212H2O (1), where hismox is a chiral ligand derived from the natural amino acid l-histidine, are replaced by CH3NH3+. The resulting compound, (CH3NH3)12{CuII24[(S,S)-hismox]12(OH2)3}·178H2O (2), retains the polar space group of 1 and is ferroelectric below 260 K. These results op…

Cation-π interactions between neutral calix[5]arene hosts and cationic organic guests

1997

Abstract The binding properties of the 1,3-bridged calix[5]crowns 1–3 towards a number of quaternary ammonium, phosphonium, and iminium ions have been investigated by 1H NMR in CDCl3 solution, where the sole driving force for association is provided by cation-π interactions. We have found that the cavity of a calix[5]arene fixed in a cone-like conformation provides a fairly efficient, but rather unselective, receptor site for quaternary salts. The conformationally mobile p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene (4) is in general a much less efficient binder than the more preorganized calixcrowns, but displays a remarkable selectivity towards N-methylquinuclidinium ion that is believed to arise from a good…

Restricted rotation in unbridged sandwich complexes: rotational behavior of closo-[Co(eta 5-NC4H4)(C2B9H11)] derivatives.

2005

Rotation about the centroid/ metal/centroid axis in ferrocene is facile; the activation energy is 1-5 kcal mol - 1 . The structurally similar sandwich complexes derived from closo-[3-Co(η 5 -NC 4 H 4 )-1,2-C 2 B 9 H 1 1 ] (1) have a different rotational habit. In 1, the cis rotamer in which the pyrrolyl nitrogen atom bisects the carboranyl cluster atoms is 3.5 kcal mol - 1 more stable in energy than the rotamer that is second lowest in energy. This cis rotamer is wide, spanning 216°, and may be split into three rotamers of almost equal energy by substituting the N and the carboranyl carbon atoms adequately. To support this statement, closo-[3-Co(η 5 -NC 4 H 4 )-1,2-(CH 3 ) 2 -1,2-C 2 B 9 H …

Self-Assembly, Characterisation, and Crystal Structure of Multinuclear Metal Complexes of the [2×3] and [3×3] Grid-Type

2002

The self-assembly of new multimetallic complexes of grid-type architecture is described. The binding of a set of tris-terdentate ligands, 1 a-1 d, based on terpyridine-like subunits, with different octahedrally coordinated metal ions leads to the formation of species whose structure depends strongly on the ligand, the metal ion, the counterion, the solvent, and the reaction conditions. Under suitable conditions, the [3 x 3] grid was obtained from the reaction of ligand 1 a with zinc tetrafluoroborate and from ligand 1 b with mercury triflate. The other ligands led to the formation of mainly one compound of composition [M(6)L(5)](12+), which has the structure of an incomplete [2 x 3] grid. T…

A New Structural Motif for an Enantiomerically Pure Metallosupramolecular Pd4L8Aggregate by Anion Templating

2014

An enantiomerically pure BINOL-based bis(3-pyridyl) ligand 1 assembles into a homochiral [Pd4(1)8] complex upon coordination to tetravalent PdII ions. The formation of this aggregate is templated by two tetrafluoroborate counterions that are encapsulated in two peripheral cavities. The resulting structure is a new structural motif for this kind of metallosupramolecular assemblies that arranges the palladium ions in a distorted tetrahedral fashion and forces ligand 1 to adopt two different conformations. Both phenomena are unique and cause an overall three-dimensional structure that has another confined, chiral, and hydrophilic central cavity.

A counterion study of a series of [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][A] compounds with bis(phosphane) and 6-methyl and 6,6′-dimethyl-substituted 2,2′-bipyridine ligands …

2021

The syntheses and characterisations of a series of heteroleptic copper(i) compounds [Cu(POP)(Mebpy)][A], [Cu(POP)(Me2bpy)][A], [Cu(xantphos)(Mebpy)][A] and [Cu(xantphos)(Me2bpy)][A] in which [A]− is [BF4]−, [PF6]−, [BPh4]− and [BArF4]− (Mebpy = 6-methyl-2,2′-bipyridine, Me2bpy = 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine, POP = oxydi(2,1-phenylene)bis(diphenylphosphane), xantphos = (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane), [BArF4]− = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) are reported. Nine of the compounds have been characterised by single crystal X-ray crystallography, and the consequences of the different anions on the packing interactions in the solid state are discussed. T…

Oxotris(oxalato)niobate(V) as counterion in cobalt(II) spin-crossover systems

2016

Abstract This work is devoted to the investigation of the thermally induced spin-crossover behavior from a high-spin state (HS, S = 3/2) at higher temperatures to a low-spin phase (LS, S = 1/2) at lower temperatures of the six-coordinate cobalt(II) complex in the compound [Co(terpy)2]3[NbO(C2O4)3]2·3CH3OH·4H2O (2). The crystal structure of 2 together with that of its counterion as tetraphenylarsonium(V) salt (AsPh4)3[NbO(C2O4)3]·9H2O (1) are also included. The spin-crossover process was followed by the thermal variation of the χMT product between 2.0 and 400 K under the warming mode, with the LS configuration being achieved at T ⩽ 200 K and the LS → HS interconversion being incomplete at 4…

Factors influencing the transport of tryptophan hydrochloride through supported liquid membranes containing macrocyclic carriers

1997

Commercially available PTFE membranes were used as a support for liquid membranes in amino acid transport. Using tryptophan as a model amino acid, the influence of the type of organic liquid, kind of macrocyclic carrier and counter-ion on transport efficiency was examined. These studies show the strong influence of the kind of the counter-ion co-transported with amino acid cation, and the type of macrocyclic carrier used on the transport efficiency. The transport efficiency depends also on the pH of the source phase and on the nature of the organic liquid used as a membrane solvent. Liquid membranes supported on commercial porous-PTFE-membranes with hydrophobic solvents are stable for more …
