The impact of visual working memory capacity on the filtering efficiency of emotional face distractors.

2018

Emotional faces can serve as distractors for visual working memory (VWM) tasks. An event-related potential called contralateral delay activity (CDA) can measure the filtering efficiency of face distractors. Previous studies have investigated the influence of VWM capacity on filtering efficiency of simple neutral distractors but not of face distractors. We measured the CDA indicative of emotional face filtering during a VWM task related to facial identity. VWM capacity was measured in a separate colour change detection task, and participants were divided to high- and low-capacity groups. The high-capacity group was able to filter out distractors similarly irrespective of its facial emotion. …

Metrological Properties of the Test Setup for Determination Shielding Effectiveness of the Industrial Cable Connectors

2017

Abstract The paper presents results related to assessment of the repeatability and reproducibility of the measurement test setup for determination the relative value of the shielding effectiveness coefficient of the industrial connectors. The construction of the proposed test setup, the measurement method and the procedure for the analysis of measurement results were described. To determine the value of the repeatability and reproducibility coefficient, the two–way analysis of variance was used, which additionally allows for an assessment of the influence of individual sources of variance. The measurements and their analysis were conducted for several frequencies in the range up to 1 GHz. A…

Optimal Dynamic Portfolio Risk Management

2016

Numerous econometric studies report that financial asset volatilities and correlations are time-varying and predictable. Over the past decade, this knowledge has stimulated increasing interest in various dynamic portfolio risk control techniques. The two basic types of risk control techniques are: risk control across assets and risk control over time. At present, the two types of risk control techniques are not implemented simultaneously. There has been surprisingly little theoretical study of optimal dynamic portfolio risk management. In this paper, the author fills this gap in the literature by formulating and solving the multi-period portfolio choice problem. In terms of dynamic portfoli…

Accounting for species interactions is necessary for predicting how arctic arthropod communities respond to climate change

2021

Species interactions are known to structure ecological communities. Still, the influence of climate change on biodiversity has primarily been evaluated by correlating individual species distributions with local climatic descriptors, then extrapolating into future climate scenarios. We ask whether predictions on arctic arthropod response to climate change can be improved by accounting for species interactions. For this, we use a 14-year-long, weekly time series from Greenland, resolved to the species level by mitogenome mapping. During the study period, temperature increased by 2 degrees C and arthropod species richness halved. We show that with abiotic variables alone, we are essentially un…

Organelle protein changes in arbuscular mycorrhizal Medicago truncatula roots as deciphered by subcellular proteomics

2019

Prod 2020-8c SPE IPM INRA UB CNRS; The roots of most land plants can enter a symbiotic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) soil‐borne fungi belonging to the phylum Glomeromycota, which improves the mineral nutrition of the host plant. The fungus enters the root through the epidermis and grows into the cortex where it differentiates into a highly branched hyphal structure called the arbuscule. The role of the plant membrane system as the agent for cellular morphogenesis and signal/nutrient exchanges is especially accentuated during AM endosymbiosis. Notably, fungal hyphae are always surrounded by the host membrane, which is referred to as the perifungal membrane around intracellula…

The effect of random and density‐dependent variation in sampling efficiency on variance of abundance estimates from fishery surveys

2019

Abundance indices (AIs) provide information on population abundance and trends over time, while AI variance (AIV) provides information on reliability or quality of the AI. AIV is an important output from surveys and is commonly used in formal assessments of survey quality, in survey comparison studies, and in stock assessments. However, uncertainty in AIV estimates is poorly understood and studies on the precision and bias in survey AIV estimates are lacking. Typically, AIV estimates are “design based” and are derived from sampling theory under some aspect of randomized samples. Inference on population density in these cases can be confounded by unaccounted process errors such as those due …

Cost-efficient strategies to preserve dead wood-dependent species in a managed forest landscape

2016

Negative consequences of intensive forest management on biodiversity are often mitigated by setting aside old forest, but alternative strategies have been suggested. We have compared using simulations the consequences of two of these alternatives setting aside young forests or extending rotation periods - to that of current practice in managed boreal forest In all scenarios we applied a constant conservation budget and predicted forest development and harvesting over 200 years. As a proxy for biodiversity conservation, we projected the extinction risk of a dead wood-dependent beetle, Diacanthous undulatus, in a 50 km(2) landscape in central Sweden, using a colonization-extinction model. Dur…

How to reach optimal estimates of confidence intervals in microscopic counting of phytoplankton?

2021

Abstract Present practices in the microscopic counting of phytoplankton to estimate the reliability of results rely on the assumption of a random distribution of taxa in sample preparations. In contrast to that and in agreement with the literature, we show that aggregated distribution is common and can lead to over-optimistic confidence intervals, if estimated according to the shortcut procedure of Lund et al. based on the number of counted cells. We found a good linear correlation between the distribution independent confidence intervals for medians and those for parametric statistics so that 95% confidence intervals can be approximated by using a correction factor of 1.4. Instead, the rec…
