National Stories, Convergent Trends and Divergent Paths: Discursive Construction of the Higher Education and Knowledge Society – Nexus in Higher Educ…

2016

Higher education policy texts construct the relationship between higher education and knowledge society. The higher education discourse in Finland, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom and United States over the last two decades typically presents the knowledge society as either an existing fact or as a desirable development towards which countries should aspire. The convergent discourse emphasises the importance of information and communication technologies, internationalisation, globalisation, and international context for policy making; the importance of research, science and technology, but also education, learning and skills and their role in bringing about the knowledge society. At the s…

2018

Master grunnskolelærerutdanning for trinn 5-10, 5-årig masterprogram IDR507 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 Background and purpose: The purpose of physical education is a highly discussed theme today, mostly because of the unclear core of the subject. This study aims to investigate the emergence of the health-discourse, the sports-discourse and the «bildung» -discourse, as well as to examine which of these discourses that are the most prominent within Norwegian physical education. The study also aims to investigate the emergence of gender differences in the discourses in the subject, if there is a difference in experienced discourses based on schooling as well as investigating if students' wel…

The meaning of LOL: patterns of LOL deployment in YouTube comments

2019

International audience; LOL may be one of the most popular words of internet slang. It is generally taken to be the acronym of ‘laughing out loud’, but, as some studies have already shown (for example Baron 2004 and Markman 2013), it is not always used to indicate a humorous response and it really is multifunctional. Building up on previous studies of the different functions of LOL, this paper seeks to explore a possible correlation between position and function of non-lexicalized LOL. The hypothesis is that the function of LOL largely depends on its position: clause-initial LOL is not used with the same functions as clause-final LOL. The data for the study come from the comment threads of …

Quelles approches cognitives pour les discours spécialisés ?

2018

CHILDHOOD ADVERSITIES AND HOME ATMOSPHERE AS DETERMINANTS OF DISABILITY AND UNEMPLOYMENT PENSION

2017

Childhood adversities have been linked with adverse life events, but less is known about the long-term effects of childhood home atmosphere in terms of work career. We investigated whether childhood adversities and home atmosphere were associated with disability or unemployment pension. In the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study (born 1934–44), 2001 cohort members had data available on 9 childhood home atmosphere items e.g. whether it was supportive or warm (sum score 0–36, higher score indicating more favorable atmosphere), and 9 childhood adversities e.g. unemployment, parent’s long-term illness or divorce (sum score 0–9, coded into no; one; and two or more) assessed in 2001–04. Of those, 1528 ha…

A glimpse into the socialization of bilingual youngsters as interpreters: the case of Latino bilinguals brokering communication for their families an…

2010

Work on bilinguals who act as family interpreters, while not focused particularly on the development of translation and interpreting abilities, contributes to our understanding of life experiences of the individuals who begin to interpret early in their lives (Valdés and Angelelli 2003). With some exceptions (Harris 1977, 1978, 1980, 1992; Toury 1984, 1995) very little has been written about the lived experiences of young interpreters and/or about their socialization as family interpreters. Since most of the community interpreters of today were interpreters in their late childhood and adolescence, getting a glimpse into their lives and experiences may help researchers (and teachers of inter…

Young People's Translocal New Media Uses: A Multiperspective Analysis Of Language Choice And Heteroglossia

2009

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the particularities of the linguistic, social and cultural action of young Finns in translocal new media spaces, and the ways in which they themselves make sense of and account for their actions. We present findings from 4 case studies, each of which illustrates aspects of translocality in young Finns' new media uses. Theoretically and methodologically the case studies draw on sociolinguistics, discourse studies, and ethnography, making use of the concepts of language choice and linguistic and stylistic heteroglossia. Through the 4 cases in focus, the paper shows how young people's linguistically and textually sophisticated new media uses are geared…
