Mathematical Modelling Problems in a Mathematics Course for Engineers: A Commognitive Perspective

2021

Mathematical knowledge is very important for engineers; both quantitative and qualitative analysis of physical systems and manufacturing processes require solid scientific principles and appropriate mathematical tools. Teaching of mathematical modelling at the university contributes to the development of mathematical competencies, motivates the interest to mathematics and plays a significant didactical role in promoting advanced mathematical thinking. These views are supported by the analysis of students’ work on a mathematical modelling assignment in a university mathematics course for future engineers with the help of the commognitive framework. Students’ narratives in written solutions a…

2017

The purpose of this article was to investigate the relationships between different dimensions of meaning in life and subjective and psychological well-being (PWB) among late adolescents. Three hundred and eighty four Polish participants completed The Personal Meaning Profile scale, The Satisfaction With Life Scale, The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, The PWB scale, and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire. Two studies were conducted. In Study 1, the findings revealed that personal meaning had strong relations with subjective well-being (SWB) and PWB. Career goal-related social ties during two educational transitions: Antecedents and consequences

2010

Abstract This study examined adolescents’ career goal-related social ties during the transition from compulsory to post-compulsory education and during transition from post-compulsory education to working-life or further studies. A total of 687 Finnish adolescents aged 15–16 were surveyed of whom 654 also participated at the second measurement point one year later, and 497 three years later. Differences in career goal-related social ties were found according to gender, GPA, family structure, and SES. Moreover, social ties were associated with educational track after compulsory school above and beyond SES, GPA, and family structure. Adolescents who named a teacher or a romantic partner were …

El editorial como generador de campañas de agitación: intervención social de ABC y La Razón ante Educación para la Ciudadanía

2010

This paper analyzes which has been the role played by the newspapers ABC and La Razón in the public debate that preceded the introduction in Spain of the subject Education for Citizenship in 2007. This research, which considers the newspapers as political actors, tries to verify whether the editorial article is used as an essential discourse with which to construct media campaigns along a particular period. Likewise, this study examines the most relevant rhetorical and stylistic characteristics of these discourses to try to conclude what aim has guided the action of both newspapers during the conflict. The analysis shows that the fallacious argumentation and the agitator temper prevailed in…

The Transition from Middle School to High School: The Mediating Role of Perceived Peer Support in the Relationship between Family Functioning and Sch…

2018

The study focused on the transition from middle school to high school and aimed to verify the mediating role that perceived peer support may play in the relationship between family functioning in middle school and school satisfaction in high school. In middle school (Wave 1), participants were 208 adolescents (106 boys and 102 girls) aged 12–13 years (M = 12.56; SD = .61), attending the last classes of two middle public schools located in Italy. One year later (Wave 2), 155 adolescents (76 boys and 79 girls) participated again in the study when they attended the first classes of high school (M = 13.91; SD = .75). Participants completed the Italian Version of Family Assessment Device and the…

Factors Affecting Student Engagement in Online Collaborative Learning Courses

2018

Student engagement is a crucial precondition for successful learning. However, the discussion of engagement in online learning contexts has been limited. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to contribute to the current understanding of what affects online students’ engagement. The paper reports on a case study conducted in the context of Uganda. A focus group interview was carried out with 14 participants of online collaborative learning courses. I identified four categories of factors affecting online students’ engagement: (1) the online course environment, (2) informal online groups established by students, (3) interactions with co-located peers, and (4) online group dynamics. Thus,…

ARE BAD JOBS INEVITABLE? A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AGED-CARE OCCUPATIONS AND TRAINING

2017

As the population ages globally, the care of older adults with chronic disease and physical and cognitive impairment will require a significantly larger and more skilled direct care workforce than currently exists. Many countries have migration policies to encourage workers to leave home and perform this important work. Others relegate the majority of the labor to vulnerable populations including women of color and immigrants. Do these jobs have to be “bad jobs” with poor compensation, few benefits and heavy workloads? This study comparatively examines the demographic composition and extrinsic characteristics of entry-level aged care jobs in select countries: U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, A…

An undergraduate thesis training course for faculty reduces variability in student evaluations

2020

Abstract Background The undergraduate thesis evaluation process is one of the most prevalent weak points in universities; the literature indicates the need to orient undergraduate thesis evaluators through specific training initiatives. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the discrepancies between the grades awarded by undergraduate thesis supervisors and by the panel of faculty examiners, and the effect of training targeted to faculty members. Design and methods A cross-sectional study was performed during the 2015–2016 academic year in a Spanish Nursing School. Settings and participants We analyzed the mean grades from undergraduate thesis evaluation rubrics and the effects of…

To test the construct, experimental oral interviews with potential candidates of the PAU were done. Purpose of Study: The research observed whether paired interviews favored the delivery and organization of the PAU test and if this type of delivery favors the students’ performance. This paper studies how students in paired interviews outperform the individual. Sources of Evidence: About ten interviews were delivered in the US and about 40 in Spain. They all were recorded and analyzed from the interaction and output quality. Analysis and results: The study indicates tha…
