Sleeper effect from below: Long-term effects of source credibility and user comments on the persuasiveness of news articles

2018

User comments on news websites are a controversial element of online communication. Various studies have reported the negative effects of comments criticizing the related news articles on readers’ attitudes toward the issues described in these articles. However, these findings are mostly based on measurements directly after the reception of comments. No research has investigated the long-term effects of comments on readers’ article-related attitudes and compared them with the effects of cues emanating from the articles themselves. Therefore, this study transferred the sleeper effect in persuasion to news sites with comment sections. In a 2 × 2-experiment, the persuasiveness of an article w…

MEDIACIÓN PENAL EN ESPAÑA Y ALEMANIA, ENTRE LA DOGMÁTICA Y LA REALIDAD (Criminal Mediation in Spain and Germany, Between the Dogmatic and the Reality)

2018

Criminal Law and Morality Revisited: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

2020

The relationship between morality and criminal law must constantly evolve to meet the needs of changing times and circumstances. Social changes and new situations require new answers. This chapter will take the famous ‘Wolfenden Report’ (1957) as a starting point for reviewing the interaction of criminal law and morality, in the context of the broader relationship between politics, law and morality. Moral laws and civil laws have different limits and practical purposes, as is made clear in the writings of Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Spanish scholastics such as Francisco de Vitoria, Domingo de Soto and Francisco Suarez. Modern philosophers such as Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, and Mil…

Polish Jokes about Americans

2004

The objective of the present paper is to analyze the character of Polish jokes about Americans and to find out what these jokes say about Poles. The latter question results from the assumption that stereotypes reveal more about those who propagate them than about those who allegedly represent particular traits. The popularity of Americans is a certain novelty in contemporary Polish jokes and this fact could be interpreted as another element in the processes of so-called McDonaldization. The texts are presented by the chronology of events they refer to. Americans are perceived by Poles as the enemies of the Russians, and so as a positive protagonist, a symbol of the high standard of living a…

Warfare in Livonia at the beginning of the 18th century in relations of English ambassador Philippe Plantamour from Berlin

2019

An important element in current historical research is the analysis of diplomatic relations focusing on the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth. They show the history of the Polish-Lithuanian state, its internal and foreign policy from a different historical perspective. In 1700, the Great Northern War broke out and changed the political power system in Central and Eastern Europe for the next decades. Diplomats from foreign courts were interested in this war, including Philippe Plantamour, secretary of the British embassy in Berlin. He sent his reports to the British Isles in which he posted information on warfare in Livonia. The aim of the article will be to analyze diplomatic reports that can h…

Polygraph examination in anaysis of evidence

2014

"I assume that a polygraph examination may be part of mass of evidence in a specific case, and I also assume that the result of a polygraph examination belongs to forensic evidence, and within it has its place in expert evidence. Therefore, as item of evidence, it can be subjected to an analysis covering the assessment of its credibility, reliability, weigh, probative force, etc., and can also be analysed as evidential argument. Such an argument may be evaluated from two points of view: “internal” developed by its creator (in this case: by the expert), and “external” whose author is the analyst, or, more generally speaking, the addressee of the argument. Th e “internal” analysis is presente…

The concept of subjectivisation by Adorno – applied in social work

2009

This article focuses upon subjectivisation as one of the core aspects of critical theory. Subjectivisation refers to the process of becoming a subject, a fully responsible, autonomously thinking and acting adult citizen, as opposed to a manipulated and system-functioning object. It is discussed in the context of the current debates on critical reflection in social work, as it contributes to discovering the power structures in which social work is embedded. The aim is not to re-discuss critical theory as a whole, but to point out the process of subjectivisation of social workers and service users as an element for critical self-reflection in social work. The contribution includes a short int…
