Anticipating bank distress in the Eurozone: An Extreme Gradient Boosting approach
2019
Abstract The banking sector plays a special role in the economy and has critical functions which are essential for economic stability. Hence, systemic banking crises disrupt financial markets and hinder global economic growth. In this study, Extreme Gradient Boosting, a state of the art machine learning method, is applied to identify a set of key leading indicators that may help predict and prevent bank failure in the Eurozone banking sector. The cross-sectional data used in this study consists of 25 annual financial ratio series for commercial banks in the Eurozone. The sample includes Eurozone listed failed and non-failed banks for the period 2006–2016. A number of early warning systems a…
Determinants of migratory flow in Europe: A fuzzy-set approach
2018
Abstract This article examines the variables that explain immigrants' decisions to remain in 18 European countries at three key stages of the European economic cycle: 2006 (economic boom), 2009 (the height of the economic and financial crisis), and 2014 (beginning of recovery). Population variables, environmental and health service variables, and economic variables were considered. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was used to conduct the analysis. The findings indicate that immigration behavior differs according to the stage of the economic cycle. When the economic cycle is in a favorable stage (boom and economic recovery), the GDP growth and land surface area of the recei…

Hidden attractor and homoclinic orbit in Lorenz-like system describing convective fluid motion in rotating cavity
2015
Abstract In this paper a Lorenz-like system, describing convective fluid motion in rotating cavity, is considered. It is shown numerically that this system, like the classical Lorenz system, possesses a homoclinic trajectory and a chaotic self-excited attractor. However, for the considered system, unlike the classical Lorenz system, along with self-excited attractor a hidden attractor can be localized. Analytical-numerical localization of hidden attractor is demonstrated.
Afghanistan and the language of equality : a social contract in the making on a world-system fault
2013
The international intervention in Afghanistan started more than ten years ago. It built on new institutions according to the democratic model, complete with concepts generalized in the Western world since the 18th century, and among them the principle of equality. This model had founded the Amirs’ wished socio-political changes all along the 20th century, but ended in an on-going 30-year chaos with ever-renewed adversaries since the 1970’s. As operated in Afghanistan, tribalism and modernity – meant as an ideology, result in opposition prevaling as a social behaviour, which produces fragmentation or destruction and deals with equality demands through group honor. Consequently, traditionalis…
Ventilation workshop - a new concept
2000
The use of simulator technology to practise crisis resource management or to train standardised procedures in anaesthesia is a proved concept, although its setup in clinical practice is still in progress. To get a better understanding of the complex pathophysiological and clinical relations in the pulmonary system and the kind of alterations that could be induced by changing the ventilation of an intensive care unit patient, we modified the current concept. We created a workshop, which employs more than just the simulator training in the classical sense. During this workshop the participants attend one patient from admission to an emergency room, until discharge from an intensive care unit …
The Online Image of the Romanian Gendarmerie after the Diaspora Protest on August 10, 2018: Crisis Communication Strategies
2019
Abstract In this study we conducted a research on the Facebook page of the Romanian Gendarmerie, to understand the magnitude of the effects of the crisis this institution is facing after the Diaspora Protest ended in violence. We monitored the posts from August 10 to December 31, 2018 and analyzed the most relevant 50 comments from each post, in order to determine their character: positive, negative or neutral. In conducting this study, we started from the hypothesis that this event has affected the image of the Romanian Gendarmerie in the long time, and the crisis communication strategies used by the representatives of this institution have made a significant contribution to postponing the…
Does a Crisis Change News Habits? A Comparative Study of the Effects of COVID-19 on News Media Use in 17 European Countries
2021
Abstract: Exogenous shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic unleashes multiple fundamental questions about society beyond public health. Based on the classical concept of 'need for orientation' and the literature on the role of the media in times of crisis, we investigate to what extent the COVID-19 pandemic affected news consumption in comparative perspective. Based on a two-wave panel survey in 17 mostly European countries, our study targets the role of both legacy news brands (TV, radio, newspapers) and so-called contemporary news media (Internet-based and social media) during this global health crisis. Our results show an overall rise of news use across countries, but only for some types of n…
