Partiti populisti, diritti e uguaglianza di genere

2021

The Great Recession changed the political landscape of the European democracies with the electoral success of populist protest parties in different countries. In this article, we wonder if there are features that characterized these political parties about the issues of gender equality and women’s rights. Populism and feminization of politics are recurring topics in the scholars’ debate, but the relationships between these two phenomena are still little studied. Seeing as the issue is linked to context, and not only to the political parties’ differences, we will focus on three illustrative cases, in different European nations – Spain, Finland, Poland – analysing scientific literature and do…

Preface

2017

The volume is the result of the eighth edition of University of Palermo International Summer School on “Migrants, Human Rights and Democracy”, bearing the human mobility and hidden geographies theme held in Favignana (Italy), in July, 2014. Moving from Kumar Rajaram and Grundy-Warr’s volume Borderscapes. Hidden Geographies and Politics at Territory’s Edge (2007), the interesting and relevant contributions by participants (outstanding scholars, academics and humanitarian practitioners) from different Eu and non Eu countries investigate the new mobility paradigms (Cresswell, 2006; Hannam et al., 2006; Sheller and Urry, 2006), providing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of contemp…

Quantifying preferential trading in the e-MID interbank market

2015

Interbank markets allow credit institutions to exchange capital for purposes of liquidity management. These markets are among the most liquid markets in the financial system. However, liquidity of interbank markets dropped during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and such a lack of liquidity influenced the entire economic system. In this paper, we analyze transaction data from the e-MID market which is the only electronic interbank market in the Euro Area and US, over a period of eleven years (1999-2009). We adapt a method developed to detect statistically validated links in a network, in order to reveal preferential trading in a directed network. Preferential trading between banks is detecte…

Ongoing Economic Restructuring in the Wake of the Latest Economic Crisis: A Russian Perspective

2013

Abstract The latest economic crisis has brought into focus long-standing discussions regarding the role played by services in contemporary economies. Whether viewed as a support for the well-established manufacturing sector, or growth engine in its own right, the third economic sector has become a focus point for policy makers worldwide. The paper follows the effects of the crisis on the tertiarization process, with an emphasis on developing economies, where this phenomenon is barely coming of age. The research is centered on the IT market, as this is seen as a comprehensive measure of the maturity and sophistication of the services sector.

Universal Design of ICT for Emergency Management

2018

The primary objectives of this article are to give a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A systematic review on various literature with respect to Universal Design, ICT and Emergency Management between 2008 to 2018 was employed in this study, and reviewed systematically using a predefined framework. The ultimat…

Modeling the escalation/de-escalation of response operation levels in disaster response networks using hierarchical Colored Petri Nets (CPN) approach

2018

In emergency situations, the first responders need to act promptly to situations, while the disaster management authorities' response might not be at the same speed. Delays by disaster management authorities had a direct impact on response operations led response teams to the shift away from command and control structures to net-centric ones. This paper is part of a study to examine patterns of emerging organizational relations and coordination structures in disaster response operations. Understanding coordination patterns in disaster chaos can help to integrate those patterns in the planning and execution in the modern disaster management operations. We use dynamic modeling methods to anal…

Quality Indicators for Crisis Communication to Support Emergency Management by Public Authorities

2011

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for performance indicators to measure and improve crisis communication preparedness of public authorities. Such an instrument supporting organizational learning has not yet been developed for crisis communication. Literature is used to create a basis and the framework is derived from a process model with various phases integrating communication activities with crisis management. In the paper, the development of the instrument is explained and justified. Furthermore, an example of its use is provided in which the instrument is used for an auditor evaluation of a water contamination case. A next step for future research could be to analyze a…

Experimental Command and Control Center for Crisis and Disaster Management: A Living-Lab Approach

2021

The living-lab is a planned research infrastructure that includes user involvement and the co-design process. This article presents an overview of the innovative experimental control room for crisis management that adopts this living-lab approach in all research co-creation activities. The aims of this paper are threefold: (1) To study possible control room research methods, focus areas, and technologies that can be tailored to the living-lab approach; (2) To illustrate and share experience on the possibilities to tailor an experimental command and control center as a living-lab. (3) To explore the features to fulfill to maximize the benefit of the living-lab for all intended audiences. By …

Kombiniertes Simulationstraining: Ein neues Kurskonzept trainiert und verbessert das Krisenmanagement der gastroenterologischen Endoskopie

2005

Introduction Crisis management as well as realistic emergency situations can be trained in the new developed simulation workshop "Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Crisis Resource Management" by combining a full-scale simulator and the Erlanger Endoscopy Trainer. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficiency of the newly developed simulation workshop. Methods Endoscopists with more than 12 months experience can train their endoscopic skills and crisis resource management with the help of different simulators. In addition, two different scenarios (GI bleeding with significant blood loss and sedation overdoses) embedded in a realistic surrounding (emergency room) have to be managed…
