Gas-Phase Synthesis of the Elusive Trisilicontetrahydride Species (Si3H4)

2016

The bimolecular gas-phase reaction of ground-state atomic silicon (Si; 3P) with disilane (Si2H6; 1A1g) was explored under single-collision conditions in a crossed molecular beam machine at a collision energy of 21 kJ mol–1. Combined with electronic structure calculations, the results suggest the formation of Si3H4 isomer(s) along with molecular hydrogen via indirect scattering dynamics through Si3H6 collision complex(es) and intersystem crossing from the triplet to the singlet surface. The nonadiabatic reaction dynamics can synthesize the energetically accessible singlet Si3H4 isomers in overall exoergic reaction(s) (−93 ± 21 kJ mol–1). All reasonable reaction products are either cyclic or …

Harnessing Fluorescence versus Phosphorescence Ratio via Ancillary Ligand Fine-Tuned MLCT Contribution

2016

A series of gold(I) alkynyl-diphosphine complexes (XC6H4C2Au)PPh2—spacer—PPh2(AuC2C6H4X); spacer = —C2(C6H4)nC2— (A1, n = 2, X = CF3; A2, n = 2, X = OMe; A3, n = 3, X = CF3; A4, n = 3, X = OMe), —(C6H4)n— (B5, n = 3, X = OMe; B6, n = 4, X = OMe) were prepared, and their photophysical properties were investigated. The luminescence behavior of the titled compounds is dominated by the diphosphine spacer, which serves as an emitting ππ* chromophore. The complexes exhibit dual emission, comprising low and high energy bands of triplet (phosphorescence) and singlet (fluorescence) origins, respectively. The electron-donating characteristics of ancillary groups X significantly affect the LLCT/MLCT c…

Photo-Chromium: Sensitizer for Visible-Light-Induced Oxidative C−H Bond Functionalization-Electron or Energy Transfer?

2017

The chromium(III) sensitizer [Cr(ddpd)2]3+ - based on an earth-abundant metal center - possesses a unique excited state potential energy landscape (ddpd = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine). The very large energy gap between the redox active and substitutionally labile 4T2 state and the long-lived low-energy 2E spin-flip state enables a selective, efficient sensitization of triplet dioxygen to give singlet dioxygen. Ultrafast intersystem crossing after the Franck Condon point from the 4T2 to the 2E excited state within 3.5 ps precludes intermolecular electron transfer pathways from the ultrashort-lived excited 4T2 state. This specific excited state reactivity enables a …

A combination of dichogamy and herkogamy mediates reproductive success in the desert shrub Zygophyllum fabago

2020

Abstract Zygophyllum fabago is a species within the arid-adapted family Zygophyllaceae. The species is characterized by the co-occurrence of dichogamy and herkogamy. In order to understand the effect of these two complementary anti-selfing mechanisms in reproductive success, we conducted a detailed study of floral biology in Z. fabago. Our results indicated an incomplete separation of the female and male phases which is referred to as partial dichogamy. We found two floral morphs with distinct stigma position: the Central-morph (C-morph) and the Lateral-morph (L-morph). The stigma-stamen distance in the L-morph was significantly larger than in the C-morph in early, mid, and late male stages…

Fluctuating Asymmetry in Central and Marginal Populations of Lychnis viscaria in Relation to Genetic and Environmental Factors

1998

Developmental instability in the form of increased fluctuating asymmetry can be caused by either genetic or environmental stress. Because extinctions can be attributed broadly to these factors, fluctuating asymmetry may provide a sensitive tool for detecting such stresses. We studied the level of fluctuating asymmetry of flowers of a perennial outcrossing plant species, Lychnis viscaria, both in natural and common-garden populations. The degree of flower asymmetry was higher in small, isolated, and marginal populations of the species range. These marginal populations also were the most homozygous. In the core area of the species' range, flowers were more symmetrical The level of asymmetry w…

Fitness of backcross six of hybrids between transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus) and wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum

2002

The process of introgression between a transgenic crop modified for better agronomic characters and a wild relative could lead potentially to increased weediness and adaptation to the environment of the wild species. However, the formation of hybrid and hybrid progeny could be associated with functional imbalance and low fitness, which reduces the risk of gene escape and establishment of the wild species in the field. Our work compares the fitness components of parents and different types of backcross in the sixth generation of hybrids between transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus, AACC, 2n = 38) resistant to the herbicide glufosinate and wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum, RrRr, 2n = 18)…

Analysis of plant diversity with retrotransposon-based molecular markers

2010

Retrotransposons are both major generators of genetic diversity and tools for detecting the genomic changes associated with their activity because they create large and stable insertions in the genome. After the demonstration that retrotransposons are ubiquitous, active and abundant in plant genomes, various marker systems were developed to exploit polymorphisms in retrotransposon insertion patterns. These have found applications ranging from the mapping of genes responsible for particular traits and the management of backcrossing programs to analysis of population structure and diversity of wild species. This review provides an insight into the spectrum of retrotransposon-based marker syst…

The unique inflorescence structure of Dorema aucheri (Apiaceae): An adaptation to the arid environment

2021

Abstract Arid environments demand specific adaptations from plants in vegetative and reproductive systems. Self–compatibility, high pollen production and few well developed fruits are adapted to increase sexual reproductive success. Dorema aucheri is an arid–adapted, perennial monocarpic species endemic to southern Iran. It has a unique inflorescence structure. In this study, significance of inflorescence architecture for reproductive success was investigated in a wild population. The huge yellow inflorescences were frequently visited by manifold insects. The species is andromonoecious and spatially subdivided in a distal part with perfect flowers and a proximal part with male flowers. Flow…

The presentation of the methods used and results obtained during a systematic…
