Purification and identification of a cytokinin from moss callus cells.

A cytokinin was isolated from the culture medium of callus cells of the moss hybridFunaria hygrometrica (L.) Sibth xPhyscomitrium piriforme Brid. The purification procedure included ethyl-acetate extraction, silver-salt precipitation, crystallization as picrate, and ion exchange chromatography. The structure of the cytokinin was confirmed as N(6)-(Δ(2)-isopentenyl)adenine by means of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The concentration of the compound in the culture medium was determined at ca. 10(-6) M.

Abstract Studies of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) normally require purification of functional complexes directly from living animals. An alternative procedure is described wherein a commercial preparation of KLH which is fully dissociated into its subunits (Immucothel®, biosyn Arzneimittel GmbH) is reassociated in the presence of a high concentration of calcium and magnesium. The reassociation products, when observed by electron microscopy, consist of didecamers, multidecamers and flexible tubules of varying length. Abstract The Quaternary Kula Volcanic Province is located in western Anatolia, Turkey. This Na-alkaline anorogenic volcanism includes exposures of around 80 cinder cones, lava flows, and tuffs, representing one of the youngest volcanic activities in this region (1.9–0.026 Ma). The magmatism is related to an extensional regime and is interpreted as being derived predominantly from the asthenospheric mantle. The lava flows are mostly of a basanitic composition and host rare comagmatic enclaves. The enclaves are composed of two dominant lithologies: amphibolites and clinopyroxenites with and without olivine. Amphibole is usually resorbed and replaced by a rhoenite-rich breakdown corona. This work focuses on the development of a regional P-T-path from the Malpica-Lamego Ductile Shear Zone, NW Portugal, based on the microstructures of shearband boudins evolved during progressive simple shear. The combination of microstructural analysis, fluid inclusion studies, crystallographic pre- ffered orientation and fractal geometry analyses, allows to link several stages in the internal evolution of the boudin to regional P-T conditions. Cloud point temperatures (T cp ) and crystallization temperatures (T 1/s ) were measured at different constant shear rates for the ternary system tetrahydronaphthalene/poly(ethylene oxide)/oligo(dimethyl siloxane-b-ethylene oxide) using a rheo-optical device and in the case of T 1/s additionnaly a viscometer. This system enables for the first time a joint investigation of both transitions with a given mixture. Shear favors the homogeneous liquid state and the formation of crystals. T cp (liquid/liquid demixing, UCST) shifts to lower and T 1/s (liquid/solid, segregation of PEO) to higher temperatures by several degrees as the shear rate, γ, is increased up to 500 s -1 . International audience; Colloidal bismuth therapeutics have been used for hundreds of years, yet remain mysterious. Here we report an X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) study of the solvolysis of bismuth disalicylate, a model for the metallodrug bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol). This reveals catalysis by traces of water, followed by multistep cluster growth. The ratio of the two major species, {Bi9O7} and {Bi38O44}, depends on exposure to air, time, and the solvent. The solution-phase cluster structures are of significantly higher symmetry in comparison to solid-state analogues, with reduced off-center Bi3+ displacements. Random coincidences can contribute substantially to the background in positron emission tomography (PET). Several estimation methods are being used for correcting them. The goal of this study was to investigate the validity of techniques for random coincidence estimation, with various low-energy thresholds (LETs). Simulated singles list-mode data of the MADPET-II small animal PET scanner were used as input. The simulations have been performed using the GATE simulation toolkit. The creation of three-dimensional ordered colloidal crystals, for application in a range of nanotechnologies, has been a goal for many researchers in the past few years. The main difficulty in creating macroscopic sized crystals of densely packed colloidal particles is that colloidal particles always have a range of particle sizes - ie, they are polydisperse. This paper studied the crystallization kinetics of a hard-sphere colloid with a well defined Gaussian polydispersity.
