Quotas regulation is necessary but not sufficient to mitigate the impact of SCUBA diving in a highly visited marine protected area.

2021

Abstract When effectively managed, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can produce wide ecosystem benefits that can foster, directly and indirectly, local economies. Tourism is one of the sectors mainly benefited by the effect of conservation. SCUBA diving represents an important tourism activity, especially in the context of MPAs, where it is one of the few activities often fostered rather than limited, for its capacity to integrate environmental and socio-economic sustainability. However, SCUBA diving can also produce negative impacts on the environment when tourism frequentation exceeds a sustainable threshold, these potentially generating negative effects on the sector itself. In this study, …

Recent studies on the economic dimensions of sports and physical activity in Germany have revealed that sport-related tourism is one of the important contributors to private household consumption. Due to a lack of representative and large-scale data sets, this topic has never been displayed in detail before. By using computer assisted telephone and web interviews, we collected a total data set of n=19,396 persons living in Germany. The expenditures for active sport tourism were isolated, which is understood as travelling to take part in different sporting activities. Data are provided on the overall spending of German households for sport trips, with skiing (€ 3.4 bn) and scuba diving (€ 2.…

[(Pyridylcarbonyl)pyridyl]triazolopyridines, Useful Ligands for the Construction of Polynuclear Coordination Compounds – Synthesis, Crystal Structure…

2007

A new tetranuclear cubane Cu4O4 complex has been synthesised from assembly of CuII ions and the polydentate ligand (pyridin-2-yl){6-([1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-yl)pyridin-2-yl}methanone. Crystallographic analysis indicates that the Cu4O4 unit has an S4 symmetry. The magnetic properties have been analysed using the H = –2Σi,jJijSiSj spin Hamiltonian. Two distinct coupling constants, 2J1,3 = –37.4 cm–1 and 2J1,2 = –2.6 cm–1, obtained from the fitting of the experimental data have been rationalised on the basis of a density functional study of magnetostructural correlations in cubane complexes containing the Cu4O4 core. Application of Cell Culture for the Production of Bioactive Compounds from Sponges:  Synthesis of Avarol by Primmorphs from Dysidea avara

2000

Among all metazoan phyla, sponges are known to produce the largest number of bioactive compounds. However, until now, only one compound, arabinofuranosyladenine, has been approved for application in humans. One major obstacle is the limited availability of larger quantities of defined sponge starting material. Recently, we introduced the in vitro culture of primmorphs from Suberites domuncula, which contain proliferating cells. Now we have established the primmorph culture also from the marine sponge Dysidea avara and demonstrate that this special form of sponge cell aggregates produces avarol, a sesquiterpenoid hydroquinone, known to display strong cytostatic activity especially against ma…

Abstract: In this paper we try to demonstrate the polyphonic wealth of Leonardo Padura's prose.  To achieve this, we emphasize the multiple voices talking from the pages of his novels and the different genres and forms that these voices are able to adopt. Besides, we seek …

Ernesto Guevara: soldado y soldador del mundo

2016

The article analyzes Che Guevara as an icon of a time and an epoch which still echoes in our present. What does reveal its actuality? What does keep its image in a state of openness? The article shows the continuity between some religious paradigms and the political images of Che Guevara. Fil: Gilman, Claudia Patricia.

Abstract: This article analyzes the work of Cristina Garcia, a Cuban-American author, and puts her in he co…

Induction of DNA crosslinks and DNA strand lesions by cyclophosphamide after activation by cytochrome P450 2B1

1997

Cyclophosphamide requires metabolic activation by cytochrome P450 to exert its genotoxic effects. Therefore in vitro studies on its mechanism of action have been limited to the use of self-activating derivatives of cyclophosphamide or to hepatocytes as an activating system. In this study we used a cell line of Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79 cells), genetically engineered to express active cytochrome P450 2B1 as the sole observable cytochrome P450 (SD1 cells). An increase in DNA strand lesions (SL: DNA single-strand breaks and alkali labile sites) was observed between 0.5 and 1.5 mM cyclophosphamide (24 h incubation) which could be classified as alkali labile sites using a modified al…

Induction of DNA strand breaks and expression of HSP70 and GRP78 homolog by cadmium in the marine sponge Suberites domuncula

1998

The marine sponge Suberites domuncula was used as a bioindicator to study the effects of cadmium on the occurrence of DNA strand breakage and on the induction of the expression of the stress biomarkers, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) homolog. The cDNA encoding GRP78 homolog from S. domuncula was isolated and characterized. The GRP78 cDNA has a length of 2.1 kb and displays characteristic features of the HSP70 family ; it encodes an aa sequence of M-r 72, 000. Exposure of S. domuncula to 1 mg/L of cadmium chloride for 24 h caused a strong(16.6-fold) increase in cadmium content to 7.7 mu g/g wet weight of sponge tissue ; after an incubation period of 6 …
