Interrelation Between European Union Protection and National Protection
2014
In addition to registration requirements, registration procedure, and the protection of registered IGOs, namely PDOs and PGIs, as well as protected indications of origin (within the Aromatised Wines Regulation), the EU law on IGOs also includes the regulation of other aspects. Competence of state institutions of EU Member States to ensure the observance of the regulation of IGOs as it is provided in the EU law or interrelation with other EU legal acts relating to IGOs already discussed in Part II of this book should be mentioned among such aspects.

Examining Sources of Farmers’ Knowledge as a Premise Behind Realization of the Smart Village Conception. A Case Study of Opole Region
2019
The aim of the study is to point to the need of doing research on the system of agricultural knowledge and information as a premise behind realization of the conception of smart village in the territorial framework. Accepting the assumption that intelligent agriculture lies at the foundation of transformation of rural areas, the author indicates the role of the system of agricultural knowledge and information in the process of modernization of agricultural holdings. In the article, questionnaire-based survey research was used in relation to the sustainable development of agriculture in Opole Region. In order to assess the level of adaptation of agricultural holdings to economy based on know…
Assessing farming eco-efficiency: a Data Envelopment Analysis approach.
2010
This paper assesses farming eco-efficiency using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) techniques. Eco-efficiency scores at both farm and environmental pressure-specific levels are computed for a sample of Spanish farmers operating in the rain-fed agricultural system of Campos County. The determinants of eco-efficiency are then studied using truncated regression and bootstrapping techniques. We contribute to previous literature in this field of research by including information on slacks in the assessment of the potential environmental pressure reductions in a DEA framework. Our results reveal that farmers are quite eco-inefficient, with very few differences emerging among specific environmental …
Farmers' costs of environmental regulation: Reducing the consumption of nitrogen in citrus farming
2007
Abstract Environmental externalities in agriculture, and the choice of suitable instruments to integrate environmental concerns into agricultural policies, are a matter of interest for the Common Agricultural Policy. In this paper, we use Data Envelopment Analysis techniques to assess the impact on farms' performance of two environmentally-friendly regulations aimed at abating consumption of inorganic nitrogen in Spanish citrus farming: levies on purchased nitrogen and nitrogen use permits for farms. By comparing farms' short-run maximum profits under both unregulated and regulated scenarios a regulation cost index is computed. Our results show that nitrogen overuse is mostly a matter of ma…
Urban Development and Cultural Policy “White Elephants”: Barcelona and Valencia
2015
AbstractThe importance of culture in defining new models of local development has been increasingly emphasized. However, less attention has been paid to the influence of local development models on local cultural policy. This article will focus on analysing two cities that have used culture as a central element in their economic and urban development. In both cases, they have followed different strategies but the two have finally finished generating two “white elephants”: the Universal Forum of Cultures in the case of Barcelona and the City of Arts and Sciences in the case of Valencia. From a comparison of the two cases, the paper analyses the causes of this urban phenomenon, which combines…

Intellectuals, nationalism, and the arts
2007
In this article we argue that the role of intellectuals was essential (1) in the formation of Finnish cultural policy and (2) for the development of national cultural administration and public arts subsidy system in the country in the period leading up to the Second World War. The actions of the intellectuals can be considered as political choices in a contingent socio‐political realm, and arts as an essential part of the signifying system. In Finland, intellectuals remained active in the intertwining areas between the state and civil society. We highlight the impact of their actions especially through a study of archival materials obtained from the State Arts Boards. At these Boards, the i…
The definition of culture in culture-based urban development strategies: antagonisms in the construction of a culture-based development discourse
2013
Implementing culture-based development strategies is a recent trend in large and small cities all over Europe. The definition of culture and the objectives of cultural strategies are highly contested in the public debate. Analysing the newspaper debates on the establishment of the Cultiva foundation in Kristiansand, Norway, this article discusses how and why the discursive debate on the definition of culture creates different discursive positions in the public debate on culture-based development. In the different discourses on what these strategies should be, there are a number of antagonisms that contribute to defining the relationships and interfaces between the different discursive posit…
Heritage and Cultural Policy in France under the Fifth Republic
2003
International audience; In the French historical tradition, four approaches at least have been heavily exploited. One seminal study defines the concept longitudinally in terms of religion, the monarchy, the family, the nation, the administration and science. Another essay uses allegory in an attempt to penetrate the proclaimed, avowed or unspoken motives underlying the notion of heritage. Another work uses the criterion of restoration to determine when a historical monument falls into the category of heritage. Fourth, a recent ground-breaking treatise considers heritage in historical and archaeological practice as reflecting representations of citizenship and the nation. Our angle of attack…
