Trends in the Epidemiology of Leishmaniasis in the City of Barcelona (1996–2019)

2021

Background: Leishmaniasis is a neglected zoonosis produced by 20 different flagellated parasites of the Leishmania genus, a protozoan transmitted to humans and other vertebrates by the bite of dipteran insects of the Phlebotominae subfamily. It is endemic in Mediterranean countries and the number of cases is expected to increase due to climate change and migration. Prioritizing public health interventions for prevention and control is essential. The objective was to characterize the epidemiology and temporal trends in the incidence of human leishmaniasis in the city of Barcelona, between the years 1996 and 2019. Methods: A population-based, analytical observational study among residents in …

Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Are Not at Increased Risk of COVID-19: A Large Multinational Cohort Study

2020

The impact of COVID-19 on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients under pharmacological immunosuppression is still not clearly understood. We investigated the incidence of COVID-19 and the impact of immunosuppression and containment measures on the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a large IBD cohort, from a multicenter cohort from 21st of February to 30th of June, 2020. Ninety-seven patients with IBD (43 UC, 53 CD, one unclassified IBD) and concomitant COVID-19 over a total of 23,879 patients with IBD were enrolled in the study. The cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with IBD vs. the general population was 0.406% and 0.402% cases, respectively. Twenty-three patients (…

Comparison of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Transformed Acute Myeloid Leukemia Derived from MDS, CMML or MPN. a Report of the Chronic Mali…

2016

Abstract Introduction Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) can progress to acute myeloid leukemia (transformed AML). The aim of this EBMT registry study was to compare 3 year outcome in patients with transformed AMLwho received allogeneic stem cell transplantation according to the primary disease. Patients and Methods Within the European Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) registry, we found 4214 patients (female: 39%, male: 61%) with transformed acute myeloid leukemia, who received allogeneic stem cell transplantation between 2000 and 2014. The primary disease was MDS (n=3541), CMML (n=251) or MPN (n=4…

Clinical Validation of the Myelofibrosis Transplant Scoring System in an Independent Series of Myelofibrosis Patients Undergoing Allogeneic Hematopoi…

2019

Introduction: Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) constitutes the only curative treatment for myelofibrosis (MF), but its associated toxicity remains high. Prognostic risk models are widely used in clinical practice to select those MF patients who are more likely to benefit from transplantation. Recently, a new prognostic model, the Myelofibrosis Transplant Scoring System (MTSS), has been developed to predict the outcome of MF patients undergoing allo-HCT (Gagelmann N et al, Blood 2019). We aimed to evaluate the performance of such model in an independent series of patients. Methods: This is a retrospective study that included all adult patients who underwent first allo…

Diagnosis and Treatment of Lower Extremity Venous Thromboembolism

2020

Importance: Incidence rates for lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) range from 88 to 112 per 100 000 person-years and increase with age. Rates of recurrent VTE range from 20% to 36% during the 10 years after an initial event.Observations: PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for English-language studies published from January 2015 through June 2020 for randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and observational studies. Risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE), such as older age, malignancy (cumulative incidence of 7.4% after a median of 19 months), inflammatory disorders (VTE risk is 4.7% in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 2.5% in those withou…

Phase I/II Study of the Deacetylase Inhibitor Panobinostat As Maintenance Therapy after an Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation in Patients with High…

2015

Abstract Background: Leukemic relapse and graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) remain major obstacles after an allogeneic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Panobinostat is a potent inhibitor of class I, II and IV deacetylases and has shown antileukemic as well as immunomodulatory activity. The hypothesis of our phase I/II PANOBEST trial was that panobinostat can effectively prevent relapse in patients (pts) with high-risk (HR) myeloid diseases while simultaneously reducing GvHD. We aimed to determine dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and/or recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D) of panobinostat in adult pts with HR acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS…

0053: Incidence of cardiovascular events following myocardial infarction in France: an observational analysis using a claims database

2016

Objectives To describe the characteristics and treatments of patients having a myocardial infarction (MI) and estimate the incidence of cardiovascular events following the index MI, in the French Health Insurance database. Method A cohort of patients who had a MI in France between 2007 and 2011 was extracted from a claim database: the Echantillon Generaliste de Beneficiaires (a 1% representative sample of subjects covered by the general health insurance (?600,000 patients). The incidence of cardiovascular events following the index MI was estimated using the Kaplan Meier method. Results 1,977 subjects were identified with an index myocardial MI: 2/3 were males, mean age=67.2 y, 20.6% had di…

Cardiovascular risk and liver transplantation in HIV patients. Are HIV infected liver transplant recipients at higher risk?

2021

Abstract Background Cardiovascular (CV) diseases are currently one of the main causes of morbimortality in HIV-infected patients. Similarly, LT recipients have increased prevalence of CV risk factors. Our aim was to assess whether HIV infected LT patients have an increased prevalence of CV risk factors and events (CVE) as compared to non-HIV LT patients. Methods We included LT recipients from 2004 to 2016 from a single center. HIV-infected patients were matched to 2 non-HIV controls each by sex, liver disease etiology, and date of LT. Results A total of 138 LT recipients were included (46 HIV-infected and 92 HIV-uninfected). HCV was the main etiology (85% of HIV-infected and 83% of HIV-unin…

GVHD prophylaxis plus ATLG after myeloablative allogeneic haemopoietic peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation from HLA-identical siblings in pati…

2019

Summary Background We previously showed that human anti-T-lymphocyte globulin (ATLG) plus ciclosporin and methotrexate given to patients with acute leukaemia in remission, having allogeneic haemopoietic stem-cell transplantation with peripheral blood stem cells from an HLA-identical sibling donor after myeloablative conditioning, significantly reduced 2-year chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) incidence and severity, without increasing disease relapse and infections, and improves cGVHD-free and relapse-free survival (cGRFS). The aim of an extended follow-up study was the assessment of long-term outcomes, which are, in this context, scarcely reported in the literature. We report unpubl…

2020

Abstract Background The long-term effectiveness of antipsychotic maintenance treatment after first-episode psychosis (FEP) is contested. In this real-world observational study, we examined how cumulative exposure to antipsychotics within the first 5 years from FEP was associated with the 19-year outcome. Methods Finnish national registers were used to detect all patients who were hospitalized due to non-affective psychosis in the mid-1990s, and who were treatment naïve prior to the inclusion period (N = 1318). Generalized linear models with logit link function were used to estimate how cumulative exposure to antipsychotics within the first 5 years from onset was associated with mortality, w…
