Two new natural begomovirus recombinants associated with the tomato yellow leaf curl disease co-exist with parental viruses in tomato epidemics in It…

2009

Two tomato geminivirus species co-exist in protected crops in Sicily, Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV, found in 1989) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV, found in 2002), and mixed infections have been detected. In a field survey conducted in 2004, the viral intergenic region (IR) was amplified from infected plants, and molecules apparently hybrid between the two species were found, but only in plants where one or both parental species were also present. Two of these hybrids, named 2/2 and 2/5, were isolated and infectious clones were obtained. They were both readily whitefly-transmitted to tomato plants; clone 2/5 produced symptoms typical of TYLCSV and TYLCV, while clo…

Guaranteed Error Bounds for Conforming Approximations of a Maxwell Type Problem

2009

This paper is concerned with computable error estimates for approximations to a boundary-value problem $$\mathrm{curl}\ {\mu }^{-1}\mathrm{curl}\ u + {\kappa }^{2}u = j\quad \textrm{ in }\Omega ,$$ where μ > 0 and κ are bounded functions. We derive a posteriori error estimates valid for any conforming approximations of the considered problems. For this purpose, we apply a new approach that is based on certain transformations of the basic integral identity. The consistency of the derived a posteriori error estimates is proved and the corresponding computational strategies are discussed.

Minimal unit vector fields

2002

We compute the first variation of the functional that assigns each unit vector field the volume of its image in the unit tangent bundle. It is shown that critical points are exactly those vector fields that determine a minimal immersion. We also find a necessary and sufficient condition that a vector field, defined in an open manifold, must fulfill to be minimal, and obtain a simpler equivalent condition when the vector field is Killing. The condition is fulfilled, in particular, by the characteristic vector field of a Sasakian manifold and by Hopf vector fields on spheres.

A WAVELET OPERATOR ON THE INTERVAL IN SOLVING MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS

2011

In this paper, a differential wavelet-based operator defined on an interval is presented and used in evaluating the electromagnetic field described by Maxwell's curl equations, in time domain. The wavelet operator has been generated by using Daubechies wavelets with boundary functions. A spatial differential scheme has been performed and it has been applied in studying electromagnetic phenomena in a lossless medium. The proposed approach has been successfully tested on a bounded axial-symmetric cylindrical domain.

An improved smoothed particle electromagnetics method in 3D time domain simulations

2011

In this paper, an enhanced variant of the meshless smoothed particle electromagnetics (SPEM) method is performed in order to solve PDEs in time domain describing 3D transient electromagnetic phenomena. The method appears to be very efficient in approximating spatial derivatives in the numerical treatment of Maxwell's curl equations. In many cases, very often, accuracy degradation, due to a lack of particle consistency, severely limits the usefulness of this approach. A numerical corrective strategy, which allows to restore the SPEM consistency, without any modification of the smoothing kernel function and its derivatives, is presented. The method allows to restore the same order of consiste…

The exterior derivative as a Killing vector field

1996

Among all the homogeneous Riemannian graded metrics on the algebra of differential forms, those for which the exterior derivative is a Killing graded vector field are characterized. It is shown that all of them are odd, and are naturally associated to an underlying smooth Riemannian metric. It is also shown that all of them are Ricci-flat in the graded sense, and have a graded Laplacian operator that annihilates the whole algebra of differential forms.

<title>Using infrared thermography as a tool to analyze curling and cockling of paper</title>

1992

Paper surface topology analysis with infrared thermography is described. Heat is applied perpendicular to the target. Temperature distribution of the sheet correlates well with the surface height distribution when the sheet is placed on the isothermic plate. Mathematical tools for data analysis and the mechanisms behind the curl and cockles are briefly discussed. Curl in paper and paperboard is defined as deviation from the flat form.© (1992) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Volume, energy and generalized energy of unit vector fields on Berger spheres: stability of Hopf vector fields

2005

We study to what extent the known results concerning the behaviour of Hopf vector fields, with respect to volume, energy and generalized energy functionals, on the round sphere are still valid for the metrics obtained by performing the canonical variation of the Hopf fibration.

The curl and fluting of paper : The effect of elasto-plasticity

2016

An in-plane elasto-plastic material model and a hygroexpansivity model were applied for paper. The input parameters for both models are fiber orientation and dry solids content. A finite element model was constructed offering possibilities for studying different structural variations of an orthotropic sheet as well as buckling behavior and internal stress situations under through-thickness strain differences. Examples related to the curl and webfluting phenomena of paper are presented. Both studied cases presented in this paper indicates the usefulness of the hygro-elasto-plastic model in predicting the challenging deformation phenomena of orthotropic paper sheets. The application possib…

First-principles calculation of electron spin-rotation tensors.

2010

Using Curl's Hamiltonian (Curl, R. F. Mol. Phys. 1965, 9, 585) first-principles calculations at the Hartree-Fock and various coupled-cluster (CC) levels based on a perturbative scheme are reported. The effects of basis-set dependence and electron correlation have been investigated by performing benchmark calculations for a set of radicals comprising 12 species and 14 electronic states. In comparison to experimental results, the electron spin-rotation tensor is obtained with a 10-15% accuracy when using the CC singles and doubles approximation and a triple-zeta quality basis set. Some improvements are seen when triple excitations are considered via the CC singles, doubles, and triples model.
