Current role of the chimney technique in the treatment of complex abdominal aortic pathologies: A position paper from the PERICLES Registry investiga…

2020

Historically, chimney/snorkel endovascular aortic repair (Ch-EVAR) emerged as a rescue technique to revascularize and/or preserve inadvertently covered critical branch vessels during infrarenal aortic endografting. Next, in its evolutionary path, Ch-EVAR offered a viable treatment option for complex aortic repair, and particularly in situations where fenestrated/ branched EVAR was not a therapeutic option due to the lack of availability and/or anatomical constraints. In this context, this technique offered distinct advantages such as off-the-shelf availability, straightforward implantation techniques, and lower resource use-intensity enabling performance by a large number of operators manag…

Effectiveness of tDCS to Improve Recognition and Reduce False Memories in Older Adults

2020

Background. False memories tend to increase in healthy and pathological aging, and their reduction could be useful in improving cognitive functioning. The objective was to use an active-placebo method to verify whether the application of tDCS in improving true recognition and reducing false memories in healthy older people. Method. Participants were 29 healthy older adults (65-78 years old) assigned to active or placebo group; active group received anodal stimulation at 2mA for 20 min over F7. An experimental task was used to estimate true and false recognition. The procedure took place in two sessions on two consecutive days. Results. A mixed ANOVA of true recognition showed a significant …

Dental management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

2010

Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are the most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), both of unknown aetiology. These conditions are characterised by the chronic and recurrent inflammation of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract, but while in CD, chronic inflammation may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, in UC, mucosal inflammatory changes are confined to the colon. IBD is currently on the increase, and it is important for the dental professional to be familiar with the condition as patients with IBD may present oral manifestations of the underlying disease. Such manifestations of IBD may precede the onset of intestinal radiographic lesions by as much …

Airway management - a review of current methods, guidelines and equipment

2018

Maintaining airway patency is an essential issue in many fields of medicine. The modern approach to CPR, which focuses on maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation was finally established by Peter Safar in his book ABC of Resuscitation (1950). At present, along with the development of evidence-based medicine, techniques which are proven to be clinically effective are regularly published in a convenient form – as bundles and guidelines. Regarding airway management, ERC and DAS guidelines are the most reliable and useful sources of knowledge and practical clinical advice. Among the medical staff, there is emphasis put on the mastery of AB C techniques. Airway management is the first step…

Tetrodotoxin slightly shortens action potential duration in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

1988

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), at concentrations significantly decreasing maximal upstroke velocity (dV/dtmax) of the action potential, exerted variable effects on action potential duration (APD) in different myocardial preparations. APD was virtually unchanged by tetrodotoxin in the guinea pig atrium, but slightly shortened in the guinea pig ventricle at maximally effective concentrations. In the human ventricle, both dV/dtmax and APD were reduced in the same concentration range of TTX. These results suggest that a TTX-sensitive sodium current significantly contributes to the repolarization phase of the action potential in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

Ipsilesional and contralesional regions participate in the improvement of poststroke aphasia: a transcranial direct current stimulation study

2015

In the past few years, noninvasive cerebral stimulations have been used to modulate language task performance in healthy and aphasic patients. In this study, a dual transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on anterior and posterior language areas was applied for 2 weeks to a patient with a possible crossed aphasia following a right hemisphere stroke. Inhibitory cathodal stimulation of the right Brodmann areas (BA) 44/45 and simultaneous anodal stimulation of the left BA 44/45 improved the patient’s performance in picture naming. Conversely, the same bilateral montage on BA 39/40 did not produce any significant improvement; finally, electrode polarity inversion over BA 39/40 yielded a fu…

Current epidemiology of HCV in Sicily: the RESIST-HCV model

2019

Background: Real-world data to guide hepatitis C virus (HCV)- related public health initiatives and linkage to care of patients are lacking in our region. Aims: To describe the epidemiological features of a large cohort of patients with chronic HCV infection from Sicily included in a regional network aimed at DAA treatment (RESIST-HCV). Methods: Demographic and clinical data were recorded on a web-based platform before starting treatment with DAAs. Gender, year of birth, HCV genotype, co-infections, stages of liver disease and co-morbidities were analyzed. Chi-square with Yates correc- tion was appliedto assess the differences between cohorts. Results: Overall, 15,270 patients were register…

ELS live surgery: a developing story

2019

Since 2015, the European Laryngological Society (ELS) has organized on a yearly basis the European Laryngological Live Surgery Broadcast. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the increasing worldwide audience. The number of individual computers logged in, number of estimated audience, and number of countries with an active audience were calculated and compared to the numbers in 2015. In 2018, 19 live interventions were performed in three parallel sessions. The surgeons worked in 10 departments in 8 different countries. The number of individual computers logged in increased from 1000 in 2015 to 16000 in 2018. The estimated audience increased from 3000 to 32000 visitors. The number of cou…

Measuring Acceptability of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: Development and Validation of the A-IPVAW Scale

2018

Abstract: Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a major social and public health problem of global proportions. Public attitudes toward IPVAW shape the social environment in which such violence takes place, and attitudes of acceptability of IPVAW are considered a risk factor to actual IPVAW. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a scale measuring acceptability of IPVAW (A-IPVAW). To this end, a sample of 1,800 respondents was recruited via social media. A second sample of 50 IPVAW offenders was used for concurrent validity analyses. Following a cross-validation approach and using item response theory analyses, we found that the latent structure of the scale was one-…
