Long-term changes of precipitation in Latvia
2010
This study investigated long-term variability and trends in Latvia's annual, seasonal, monthly and daily precipitation using data from 10 meteorological stations for the period 1925–2006 and from station Riga University for the period 1850–2006. The obtained results indicate that during the 20th century a significant increase in precipitation has occurred in the cold season while the warm period showed a decreasing tendency. The annual precipitation totals showed a slight decrease, at half of the studied stations, due to opposite tendencies in cold season and warm season. The long-term trend in the annual precipitation in Riga (from 1850) was positive with large interannual and interdecadal…
Experimental investigation on dispersion mechanisms in rigid and flexible vegetated beds
2018
Vegetation in channels strongly affects flow structure and turbulence, with consequences on the hydrological storage of nutrients and chemical tracers, the shelter of stream biota as well as the trapping or transport of sediments. At the same time, all these phenomena are inevitably subjected to alteration of hydrological conditions in fluvial systems due to climate change. The present study intends to provide a thorough investigation into the processes of transport and dispersion induced by flow turbulence within the vegetation structure. Specifically, velocity measurements in vegetated channels were intensively conducted and analyzed in the case of both flexible submerged and rigid emerge…
Comparing long term sediment records to current biological quality element data – Implications for bioassessment and management of a eutrophic lake
2012
Defining reference conditions for lakes situated in areas of human settlement and agriculture is rarely straightforward, and is especially difficult within easily eroding and nutrient rich watersheds. We used diatoms, cyanobaterial akinetes, remains of green algae and chironomid head capsules from sediment samples of Lake Kirmanjarvi, Finland, to assess its deviation from the initial ecological status. These site-specific records of change were compared to current type-specific ecological status assessment. All paleolimnological data indicated deviation from natural conditions and mirrored the current, monitoring-based assessment of “moderate” ecological lake status. However, the sediment d…
Optical Gating of Photosensitive Synthetic Ion Channels
2011
4-oxo-4-(pyren-4-ylmethoxy) butanoic acid is used as a photolabile protecting group to show the optical gating of nanofluidic devices based on synthetic ion channels. The inner surface of the channels is decorated with monolayers of photolabile hydrophobic molecules that can be removed by irradiation, which leads to the generation of hydrophilic groups. This process can be exploited in the UV-light-triggered permselective transport of ionic species in aqueous solution through the channels. The optical gating of a single conical nanochannel and multichannel polymeric membranes is characterised experimentally and theoretically by means of current-voltage and selective permeation measurements,…
Peculiar hyper-IgM syndrome. Case report / Sindrom hiper-IgM atipic. Prezentare de caz
2015
Abstract We report a male infant diagnosed at the age of 10 months with hyper-IgM syndrome (HIGM) in context of severe infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. In patient’s outcome, in spite of immunoglobulin therapy, he continues presenting bilateral suppurative otitis media due to both Candida and penicillin-resistant pneumococcus and forearm abscess caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The infant developed bilateral cataracts, chronic hepatitis and comminuted fracture secondary to bone demineralization. The patient didn’t develop opportunistic infections as compare to CD40 Ligand deficiency patients. In contrast with the majority of HIGM case…

Polymer/metal hybrid multilayers modified Schottky devices
2013
Insulating, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and semiconducting, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), nanometer thick polymers/Au nanoparticles based hybrid multilayers (HyMLs) were fabricated on p-Si single-crystal substrate. An iterative method, which involves, respectively, spin-coating (PMMA and P3HT deposition) and sputtering (Au nanoparticles deposition) techniques to prepare Au/HyMLs/p-Si Schottky device, was used. The barrier height and the ideality factor of the Au/HyMLs/p-Si Schottky devices were investigated by current-voltage measurements in the thickness range of 1-5 bilayers. It was observed that the barrier height of such hybrid layered systems can be tuned as a function of bilayers …
Il Paradigma della Città Fluida
2013
In situ study of the sintering of a lead phosphovanadate in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope
2011
cited By 3; International audience; The in situ sintering of a powder of Pb3(VO4) 1.6(PO4)0.4 composition was performed in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. The electric current induced by the electron beam was found to reduce the effective temperature of sintering as well as to accelerate the kinetics of shrinkage of a cluster composed of sub-micrometric grains of material. The presence of the residual current flow in the cluster during observation for in situ experiments helps to reduce the apparent sintering temperatures from 50 to 150 °C compared to conventional heating conditions without current. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
