Fungal biodiversity in a new winery and population dynamics in the winery (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and in aging cellar (Brettanomyces bruxellensis)

The interspecific fungal biodiversity (Illumina Mi-Seq) and the dynamics of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Brettanomyces bruxellensis species were studied in a new winery and/or in 3 aging cellars, more specifically on the floor, the walls, the equipment and the outside of the barrels. In the new winery, an initial fungal consortium (yeasts and molds) is already present on all the winery environments before the arrival of the first harvest. This consortium consists of fungal genera such as Aureobasidium, Alternaria, Didymella and Filobasidium. These genera, that persist during two vintages, are not specific to the winery environment and seem to be adapted to natural or anthropic environments …

Compact device of high sensitivity for measurement of the refractive indices for both stationary and flowing liquids has been developed. This device can be used to analyse a variety of biomedical liquids: urine, serum protein. The refractive index (RI) is determined by measuring the deviation of a laser beam passing through a cylindrical cuvette containing the test liquid. In order to significantly improve the resolution and stability of RI measurements, the repeated reflections and refractions of the light beam travelling through the cylindrical cuvette are employed.

A field methodology to study effects of UV radiation on fish larvae.

There is a considerable lack of in situ specific information about the effects of UV-B radiation on limnic animals studied in the field. We exposed larval pike (Esox lucius L.) in two types of cuvettes (glass and quartz) placed at different depths (5 or 15 cm) to natural solar UV or to artificially enhanced UV-B (lamps on 3 h per day), simulating the scenarios for coming decades. Dose realism and comparability with earlier laboratory experiments was the main purpose, and therefore UV-B irradiances to the surface as well as underwater irradiances were directly measured. Result showed that UV-B dose rates in natural waters are low even though DOC concentration was low (4.8 mg/l) in our study …

Determination of scattering in intraocular lenses by spectrophotometric measurements.

This study presents a method for measuring scattering in explanted intraocular lenses (IOLs). Currently, determining scattering in IOLs is usually performed by Scheimpflug cameras and the results are expressed in the units used by this apparatus. The method we propose uses a spectrophotometer and this makes it possible to measure the total transmission of the IOL by using an integrating sphere; the direct transmission is determined by the double-beam mode. The difference between these two transmissions gives a value of the scattering in percentage values of light lost.
