A Model for Low-Cycle Fatigue in Micro-Structured Materials

2019

A microscale formulation for low-cycle fatigue degradation in heterogeneous materials is presented. The interface traction-separation law is modelled by a cohesive zone model for low-cycle fatigue analysis, which is developed in a consistent thermodynamic framework of elastic-plastic-damage mechanics with internal variables. A specific fatigue activation condition allows to model the material degradation related to the elastic-plastic cyclic loading conditions, with tractions levels lower than the static failure condition. A moving endurance surface, in the classic framework of kinematic hardening, enables a pure elastic behaviour without any fatigue degradation for low levels of cyclic tra…

Identification of induction motor thermal model for improved drivetrain design

2016

Selection of components of electric drivetrains is not only based on evaluating their ability to perform according to mechanical specifications, but — what is equally important — on assessing their thermal protection limits. These are typically affected by electrical and thermal properties of motors and drives. Although rated parameters (such as power, torque, speed, etc.) are easily accessible in catalogs of equipment producers, more specific properties like mass / length of copper winding, heat dissipation factor, rotor / stator dimensions etc. are not available to customers. Therefore, effective selection of drivetrain components is limited due to the lack of sufficient data and the need…

Sensitive Assays by Nucleophile-Induced Rearrangement of Photoactivated Diarylethenes.

2018

Upon light-induced isomerization, diarylethenes (DAEs) equipped with reactive aldehyde moieties rearrange selectively in the presence of amines, accompanied by decoloration. In a comprehensive study, the probe structure was optimized with regard to its inherent reactivity in the nucleophile-triggered rearrangement reaction. Detailed structure−reactivity relationships could be derived, in particular with regard to the type of integrated (het)aryl moieties as well as the location of the formyl residue, and the probes’ intrinsic reactivity with primary and secondary amines was optimized. Utilizing an ancillary base, the initially formed rearrangement product can engage in a subsequent catalyti…

Equipping metallo-supramolecular macrocycles with functional groups: Assemblies of pyridine-substituted urea ligands

2012

A series of di-(m-pyridyl)-urea ligands were prepared and characterized with respect to their conformations by NOESY experiments and crystallography. Methyl substitution in different positions of the pyridine rings provides control over the position of the pyridine N atoms relative to the urea carbonyl group. The ligands were used to self-assemble metallo-supramolecular M(2)L(2) and M(3)L(3) macrocycles which are generated in a finely balanced equilibrium in DMSO and DMF according to DOSY NMR experiments and ESI FTICR mass spectrometry. Again, crystallography was used to characterize the assemblies. Methyl substitution in positions next to the pyridine nitrogen prevents coordination, while …

Protonation of a Spherical Macrotricyclic Tetramine: Water Inclusion, Allosteric Effect, and Cooperativity

2017

The spherical macrotricyclic cryptand tetramine "C24" (1) displays remarkable protonation behaviour. It undergoes protonation in four successive steps for which pKa values of 11.17±0.05, 10.28±0.04, 6.00±0.06 and 3.08±0.08 have been determined at 298 K. The unusually close values for the first two protonations provide evidence for the encapsulation of a water molecule serving as effector for the second protonation, which is consistent with earlier observations that the exchange of protons bound in the diprotonated species with solvent protons is unusually slow and that 17 O NMR spectra show the presence of an oxygen centre in the same species quite distinct from that of solvent water. Encap…

Synthesis of 1,3-bis(trimethylcyclam) and 1,3-bis(trimethylcyclen) substituted benzenes

2009

Pd-catalyzed amination of 1,3-dibromobenzene with N,N',N''-trimethylcyclam and N,N',N''-trimethylcyclen provided corresponding 1,3-bis(tetraazamacrocyclic) derivatives of benzene in 25-32% yields. The dependence of the products yields on the phosphine ligand applied (BINAP, DavePHOS) as well as on the stoichiometry of starting compounds was established. Scope and limitations for the synthesis of N-phenyl and N-(3-bromophenyl) derivatives of trimethylcyclam and trimethylcyclen were demonstrated.

Electrochemically-driven conformational shift in mono- and di-copper constrained macrotricyclic cyclen receptors

2008

International audience; An electrochemical study of mono- and di-copper constrained cyclen macrotricycles is presented. Electrochemical data in DMF solution indicate that the reduction of dinuclear complexes occurs in two steps in the -0.4 to -0.8 V vs.AgCl/Ag potential range yielding CuII CuI and CuI CuI species further reduced to Cu metal at highly negative potentials. Mononuclear complexes are reduced in two steps to CuI and Cu metal. Electrochemical data suggest that reduction of both mononuclear and dinuclear complexes approach a square scheme involving electrochemically-driven conformational shifts for metal ions. The presence of endo- and exo-forms of the complexes are revealed by ch…

Annually resolved δ13Cshell chronologies of long-lived bivalve mollusks (Arctica islandica) reveal oceanic carbon dynamics in the temperate North Atl…

2011

Abstract The ability of the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide is likely to be adversely affected by recent climate change. However, relatively little is known about the spatiotemporal variability in the oceanic carbon cycle due to the lack of long-term, high-resolution dissolved inorganic carbon isotope ( δ 13 C DIC ) data, especially for the temperate North Atlantic, which is the major oceanic sink for anthropogenic CO 2 . Here, we report shell carbon isotope values ( δ 13 C shell ), a potential proxy for δ 13 C DIC , of old-grown specimens of the long-lived bivalve mollusk, Arctica islandica . This paper presents the first absolutely dated, annually resolved δ 13 C shell record from surface …
