Urban Hyper-Metabolism

2015

Evaluating the effect of mineralogy and mechanical stability of recycled excavation materials by Los Angeles and micro-Deval test

2021

This paper presents the findings of the mechanical performance of recycled excavation materials (REM). The aim was to document the stable performance of REM and to suggest its suitability for unbound applications. Test operations were performed at different schedules with the Los Angeles (LA) and micro-Deval (MD) test machine. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed to examine the effect of mineralogy on the performance of REM. The results showed that REM showed consistent LA performance, but significant variations were observed in MD values. XRD results showed that up to 20% of chlorite and mica minerals had no influence on the LA performance of REM.

Exploring the anticancer potential of pyrazolo[1,2-a]benzo[1,2,3,4] tetrazin-3-one derivatives: The effect on apoptosis induction, cell cycle and pro…

2013

In order to investigate their anticancer potential, four new pyrazolo[1,2-a]benzo[1,2,3,4]-tetrazinone derivatives, designed through the chemometric protocol VLAK, and three of the most active compounds of the previous series have been evaluated on some cellular events including proliferation, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle. The NCI one dose (10 mu M) screening revealed that the 8,9-di-methyl derivative showed activity against Leukemia (CCRF-CEM) and Colon cancer cell line (COLO 205), reaching 81% and 45% of growth inhibition (GI), respectively. Replacement of the two methyl groups with two chlorine atoms maintained the activity toward Leukemia cell (CCRF-CEM, GI 77%) and selectively e…

Correlation between oxidation states of transition metal ions and variation of the coercivity in mixed-valence defect spinel ferrites

1997

Abstract Due to the very high dispersion of mixed-valence spinel ferrites prepared by ‘soft chemistry’ it becomes possible to oxidize in the spinel lattice, not only ferrous ions but also different transition metal ions (Cr 3+ , Mn 2+ , Mn 3+ , Mo 3+ , Mo 4+ V 2+ , V 3+ , Cu + ), by ‘soft’ oxidation between 150 and 500°C, under formation of non-stoichiometric spinels cation vacancies. The oxidation state with the coordination and the oxidation temperature of the cations have been determined in coppermanganese ferrites by derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), based on the specific solid-state reactivity of cations in the redox reaction. For Co-modified non-stoichiometric spinels, which present…

Spin Switching in Molecular Quantum Cellular Automata Based on Mixed-Valence Tetrameric Units

2016

In this article we focus on the study of spin effects in a single square-planar mixed-valence cell comprising two electrons and in coupled molecular cells for quantum cellular automata. Using the vibronic model we demonstrate that the polarizabilities of the cell are different in spin-singlet and spin-triplet states of the electronic pair. Based on this inference the concept of spin switching in molecular quantum cellular automata is proposed, and the conditions under which this effect is feasible are derived. In order to reveal these conditions we have performed a series of quantum-mechanical calculations of the vibronic energy levels of the isolated cell and of the cell subjected to the e…

Fracture Plane of Cruciform Specimen in Biaxial Low Cycle Fatigue—Estimate by Variance Method and Experimental Verification

1995

This paper presents the variance method of determining the fracture plane under random multiaxial stress states. The fracture plane was estimated analytically by the variance method with the three fatigue criteria. The estimated fracture planes were compared with experimental results using type SUS 304 and 1Cr-1Mo-1/4V steel cruciform specimens. The variance method with the maximum normal strain criterion, by neglecting the strain in direction in which no external forces act, could estimate the actual fracture planes of cruciform specimens in high temperature biaxial low cycle fatigue.

Increased basic fibroblast growth factor release and proliferation in xenotransplanted squamous cell carcinoma after combined irradiation/anti-vascul…

2012

Novel strategies of cancer therapy combine irradiation and anti-angiogenic active compounds. However, little is known concerning the undesired cellular and molecular effects caused by this novel treatment concept. We used a mouse squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) xenotransplantation model to evaluate the potential undesired effects which compromise the success of this therapeutic combination. SCCs were subcutanously implanted in nude mice. Animals were treated with a fractionated irradiation scheme (5x4 Gy) alone or in combination with daily injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies. Controls remained untreated. Before and after treatment, resonance imaging (MRI), …
