Ligand-Binding Cooperativity Effects in Polymer-Protein Conjugation.
2019
We present an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic characterization of structural and dynamic effects that stem from post-translational modifications of bovine serum albumin (BSA), an established model system for polymer-protein conjugation. Beyond the typical drug delivery and biocompatibility aspect of such systems, we illustrate the causes that alter internal dynamics and therefore functionality in terms of ligand-binding to the BSA protein core. Uptake of the paramagnetic fatty acid derivative 16-doxyl stearic acid by several BSA-based squaric acid macroinitiators and polymer-protein conjugates was studied by EPR spectroscopy, aided by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and z…
Lacustrine sedimentation in the diapir-controlled Miocene Bicorb Basin, Eastern Spain
1998
The Miocene Bicorb Basin is a small elongated basin developed by normal faulting of a thick Jurassic–Cretaceous carbonate succession and subsequent diapirism of Upper Triassic mudstones and evaporites. The basin fill comprises a sequence over 650 m thick formed by two units. The lower, alluvial unit consists of a complex alternation of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones, and minor lacustrine limestones. The upper unit comprises marginal alluvial and lacustrine deposits in which seven lacustrine facies associations have been distinguished. The inner lacustrine deposits comprise mudstones and carbonates with minor evaporitic deposits. At the northeast and southwest basin edges, alluvial inp…
An evidence based therapeutic approach to hereditary and acquired angioedema
2014
Purpose of review Hereditary angioedema (HAE) due to C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency (HAE-C1-INH), HAE with normal C1-INH, and acquired angioedema due to C1-INH deficiency are rare but important diseases that can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Research into the pathogenesis of angioedema has expanded greatly and has led to new clinical trials with novel therapeutic agents and strategies. Recent findings Strategies for managing HAE-C1-INH are aimed at treating acute attacks or preventing attacks through the use of prophylactic treatment. Agents available in Europe for treating acute attacks include plasma-derived C1-INH concentrates, a bradykinin B2 recepto…
Synthesis, molecular structure and stability of fused bicyclic Δ4-1,2,4-oxadiazoline Pt(II) complexes
2015
Abstract The reaction of trans -[PtCl 2 (NCR) 2 ] (R 1 = CH 2 CO 2 Me ( 1a ), R 2 = CH 2 Cl ( 1b )) with pyrroline N -oxide − O + N CHCH 2 CH 2 C Me 2 ( 4 ), at room temperature for 15 min, furnishes via [3+2] cycloaddition the fused bicyclic Δ 4 -1,2,4-oxadiazoline Pt(II) complexes trans- [PtCl 2 { N C(R)O N C(H)CH 2 CH 2 C Me 2 } 2 ] (R 1 = CH 2 CO 2 Me ( 5a ), R 2 = CH 2 Cl ( 5b )). Compounds 5a and 5b were refluxed in CH 2 Cl 2 for 1 week to afford the derived ketoimine Pt(II) complexes trans- [PtCl 2 {N(C( O)(R)) C CH 2 CH 2 C(Me 2 ) N H} 2 ] (R 1 = CH 2 CO 2 Me ( 6a ), R 2 = CH 2 Cl ( 6b )), respectively, as a result of the N–O bond cleavage of the oxadiazoline ring in 5 . The c…
Towards the fluorogenic detection of peroxide explosives through host-guest chemistry
2018
[EN] Two dansyl-modified beta-cyclodextrin derivatives (1 and 2) have been synthesized as host-guest sensory systems for the direct fluorescent detection of the peroxide explosives diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in aqueous media. The sensing is based on the displacement of the dansyl moiety from the cavity of the cyclodextrin by the peroxide guest resulting in a decrease of the intensity of the fluorescence of the dye. Both systems showed similar fluorescent responses and were more sensitive towards TATP than DADP.
Synthesis, Reactivity, Biological Activity and Applications of Fluorinated Oxadiazoles and Thiadiazoles
2014
A literature survey of the chemistry of fluorinated oxadiazoles and thiadiazoles is presented. The core part on synthetic procedures is given by type of heterocycle and includes recent developments up to the end of 2012. Reactivity is discussed when induced by the presence of the fluorinated moiety. Selected examples of bioactive compounds and applications are illustrated.
Cyclic Complexity of Words
2014
We introduce and study a complexity function on words $c_x(n),$ called \emph{cyclic complexity}, which counts the number of conjugacy classes of factors of length $n$ of an infinite word $x.$ We extend the well-known Morse-Hedlund theorem to the setting of cyclic complexity by showing that a word is ultimately periodic if and only if it has bounded cyclic complexity. Unlike most complexity functions, cyclic complexity distinguishes between Sturmian words of different slopes. We prove that if $x$ is a Sturmian word and $y$ is a word having the same cyclic complexity of $x,$ then up to renaming letters, $x$ and $y$ have the same set of factors. In particular, $y$ is also Sturmian of slope equ…
Quantum lower bound for inverting a permutation with advice
2014
Given a random permutation $f: [N] \to [N]$ as a black box and $y \in [N]$, we want to output $x = f^{-1}(y)$. Supplementary to our input, we are given classical advice in the form of a pre-computed data structure; this advice can depend on the permutation but \emph{not} on the input $y$. Classically, there is a data structure of size $\tilde{O}(S)$ and an algorithm that with the help of the data structure, given $f(x)$, can invert $f$ in time $\tilde{O}(T)$, for every choice of parameters $S$, $T$, such that $S\cdot T \ge N$. We prove a quantum lower bound of $T^2\cdot S \ge \tilde{\Omega}(\epsilon N)$ for quantum algorithms that invert a random permutation $f$ on an $\epsilon$ fraction of…
Quantum algorithm for tree size estimation, with applications to backtracking and 2-player games
2017
We study quantum algorithms on search trees of unknown structure, in a model where the tree can be discovered by local exploration. That is, we are given the root of the tree and access to a black box which, given a vertex $v$, outputs the children of $v$. We construct a quantum algorithm which, given such access to a search tree of depth at most $n$, estimates the size of the tree $T$ within a factor of $1\pm \delta$ in $\tilde{O}(\sqrt{nT})$ steps. More generally, the same algorithm can be used to estimate size of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) in a similar model. We then show two applications of this result: a) We show how to transform a classical backtracking search algorithm which exam…
Bildungsexpansion, soziale Klasse und die Wahl von Latein als Strategie der Distinktion
2021
In times of educational expansion, privileged families are looking for new strategies of distinction. Referring to Pierre Bourdieus theory of distinction, we argue that choosing Latin at school a language that is no longer spoken and therefore has no direct value is one of the strategies of privileged families to set themselves apart from less privileged families. Based on two surveys we conducted at German schools, the paper analyzes the relationship between parents educational background and the probability that their child will learn Latin. Results indicate that historically academic families have the strongest tendency towards learning Latin, followed by new academic famil…
