[EN] Mesoporous silica microparticles capped with TTF moieties and containing a ruthenium dye in the pores were used for the turn-on optical detection of the nitroaromatic explosives Tetryl and TNT via a selective pore uncapping and release of the entrapped dye.

Post-translational modifications in the survival motor neuron protein

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by a progressive loss of the spinal motoneurons. The SMA-determining gene has been termed survival motor neuron (SMN) and is deleted or mutated in over 98% of patients. The encoded gene product is a protein expressed as different isoforms. In particular, we showed that the rat SMN cDNA produces two isoforms with Mr of 32 and 35 kDa, both localized in nuclear coiled bodies, but the 32 kDa form is also cytoplasmic, whereas the 35 kDa form is also microsomal. Isomer effects in fragmentation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

We have observed significant differences in the fragmentation patterns of isomeric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) cations following collisions with helium atoms at center-of-mass energies around 100 eV. This is in contrast to the situation at other collision energies or in photo-absorption experiments where isomeric effects are very weak and where the lowest-energy dissociation channels (H- and C2H2-loss) domihate in statistical fragmentation processes. In the 100 eV range, non-statistical fragmentation also competes and is uniquely linked to losses of single carbon atoms (CHx-losses). Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (DBOV) has excellent photophysical properties, including strong fluorescence and high ambient stability. Moreover, the optical blinking properties of DBOV have enabled optical super-resolution single-molecule localization microscopy with an imaging resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Various organic and inorganic fluorescent probes have been developed for super-resolution imaging, but those sensitive to pH and/or metal ions have remained elusive. Characterization and source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in river bank soils.

Elevated PAH concentrations were detected in bank soils along the Mosel and Saar Rivers in Germany. Information on the identification of PAH sources in this area however remains unclear. This study was able to characterize the PAH sources by application of several approaches, including consideration of the distribution patterns of 45 PAHs (including 16 EPA PAHs and some alkyl PAHs), specific PAH ratios, distribution patterns of n-alkanes and principal component analysis (PCA). Comparative study on the inhibition of Na+, K+-activated ATPase activity by chlorpromazine, promazine, imipramine, and their monodesmethyl metabolites

The inhibition of the sodium- and potassium-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na-K-ATPase, EC 3.6.1.3) activity by chlorpromazine, promazine and imipramine was compared with that by the monodesmethyl metabolites of these drugs. The experiments were performed with a deoxycholate- and sodium iodide-treated microsomal enzyme preparation from rat brain. It was shown in dose-response curves as well as in double-reciprocal Lineweaver-Burk plots of Na-K-ATPase activity against KCl concentration that the monodesmethyl metabolites were stronger inhibitors than their parent compounds. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate and IL-10 coordinately contribute to nTreg cell-mediated suppression of dendritic cell activation

In humans and mice naturally occurring regulatory T cells (nTregs) are crucial for the maintenance of peripheral tolerance by controlling not only potentially autoreactive T cells but virtually all cells of the adaptive and innate immune system. Here we show that co-culture of murine dendritic cells (DC) and nTregs results in an immediate increase of cAMP in DC, responsible for a rapid down-regulation of co-stimulatory molecules (CD80, CD86). In addition, the inhibitory surface molecule B7-H3 on DC is up-regulated.
