The Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones. Part II: Interaction with the Midlatitude Flow, Downstream Impacts, and Implications for Predictab…
2019
Abstract The extratropical transition (ET) of tropical cyclones often has an important impact on the nature and predictability of the midlatitude flow. This review synthesizes the current understanding of the dynamical and physical processes that govern this impact and highlights the relationship of downstream development during ET to high-impact weather, with a focus on downstream regions. It updates a previous review from 2003 and identifies new and emerging challenges and future research needs. First, the mechanisms through which the transitioning cyclone impacts the midlatitude flow in its immediate vicinity are discussed. This “direct impact” manifests in the formation of a jet streak …
Enhanced Tropospheric Wave Forcing of Two Anticyclones in the Prephase of the January 2009 Major Stratospheric Sudden Warming Event

Sea-surface temperature co-variability in the Southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans and its connections with the atmospheric circulation in the Souther…
2003
The relationship between sea-surface temperature (SST) inter-annual variability at the subtropical and midlatitudes of the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans and its links with the atmospheric circulation in the Southern Hemisphere are investigated over the 1950–1999 period. Exploratory analysis using singular value decomposition and further investigations based on simple indices show that a large part of regional SST variability is common between the southwestern parts of both basins at subtropical and midlatitudes during the austral summer. Interestingly, these areas are also significantly associated with the far southwestern Pacific (Tasman Sea area). The patterns and time series of co-…
Dynamics and Predictability of a Heavy Dry-Season Precipitation Event over West Africa—Sensitivity Experiments with a Global Model
2009
Abstract In January 2002 the Cape Verde region in tropical West Africa was hit by an exceptionally heavy precipitation event. Rain rates of up to 116 mm (48 h)−1 caused harmful impacts on the local population. The rainfall was triggered by a series of two upper-level disturbances penetrating from the extratropics to the West African coast. This study investigates the dynamics and predictability of this event on the basis of simulations with the global model Global Model Europe (GME) of the German Weather Service [i.e., Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD)] initialized by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysis data. Free forecasts satisfactorily reproduce the upper-l…
L'activité dépressionnaire et anticyclonique hivernale des moyennes latitudes du Pacifique Nord
2007
Using a new automated scheme, synoptic mid-latitudes cyclone and anticyclone trajectories have been constructed over the North Pacific from daily sea level pressure (SLP) data, covering the period 1950-2001. Over the North-Eastern Pacific, the strength of anticyclones diminished and their frequency became more variable, while cyclones intensified and presented further southerly trajectories since the mid-1970s. Thus, cyclonic and anticyclonic activities are significantly anti-correlated. These transient activity changes averaged out into anomalously low winter mean SLP in the Aleutian Low region, consistent with the positive phase of the North Pacific Oscillation, inducing positive sea surf…
A quantitative analysis of stratospheric HCl, HNO3, and O3 in the tropopause region near the subtropical jet
2014
The effects of chemical two-way mixing on the Extratropical Transition Layer (ExTL) near the subtropical jet are investigated by stratospheric tracer-tracer correlations. To this end, in situ measurements were performed west of Africa (25-32 ◦ N) during the Transport and Composition of the Upper Troposphere Lower Stratosphere (UTLS)/Earth System Model Validation (TACTS/ESMVal) mission in August/September 2012. The Atmospheric chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer sampling HCl and HNO3 was for the first time deployed on the new German High Altitude and Long range research aircraft (HALO). Measurements of O3, CO, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) analysis, and the tig…
Connections of the West Pacific subtropical high and some hydroclimatic regimes in China with Antarctic ice-snow indices
1987
On the basis of 10 years monthly and long-term annual data the importance of the antarctic ice-snow cover and correlated indices has been discussed. By computing time-lag correlation analyses of the ice-snow indices and different atmospheric indices of the northern hemisphere and some hydroclimatic regimes in China, it could be shown that a close relationship between sea-ice in the Antarctic and the intensity and area indices of the subtropical West Pacific high exists. It was also possible to prove a close relationship between antarctic ice-snow indices and the annual run-off of the Yellow River at Sanmenxia, and between rainfall over North China and the lower sections of the Yellow river.
Improving Separation of Oil and Water With a Novel Coalescing Centrifugal Pump
2018
Summary A novel centrifugal pump that increases oil-droplet sizes in produced water has been developed. This paper investigates a concept of pumping-pressure optimization, with respect to downstream separation efficiency, for the new pump. The investigation shows that the coalescing centrifugal pump always increased the separation efficiency of a downstream hydrocyclone. Furthermore, it is shown that the pumping pressure can be adjusted to maximize the improvement. Experimental results demonstrate how pumping conditions that minimize the volume fraction of droplets with a diameter smaller than the cut size of the hydrocyclone maximize the separation efficiency. Finally, it is demonstrated h…
