Conceptual design of the AGATA 1$\pi$ array at GANIL

2017

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on sim…

ISOLTRAP: A tandem penning trap mass spectrometer for radioactive isotopes

1993

The masses of over sixty short-lived Rb, Sr, Cs, Ba, Fr and Ra isotopes have been measured at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN/Geneva by determination of their cyclotron frequency in the tandem Penning trap system ISOLTRAP. Resolving powers exceedingm/Δm(FWHM)=106 and accuracies of typically δm/m=10−7 could be achieved. ISOLTRAP can also act as an isomer separator, as proven for the cases of84Rb and78Rb.

Simultaneous wide-range stopping power determination for several ions

2002

A new procedure to extract simultaneously continuous stopping power curves for several ions and several absorbers over a wide energy range and with statistical errors reduced to negligible level is presented. The method combines our novel time-of-flight based method with the capability of our K130 cyclotron and ECR ion-source to produce the so-called ion cocktails. The potential of the method is demonstrated with a 6.0 MeV/u cocktail consisting of 16O4+, 28Si7+ and 40Ar10+ ions. The stopping power in polycarbonate in the energy range of 0.35–5 MeV/u has been determined with absolute uncertainty of less than 2.3% and with relative below 0.2%. The results are compared with literature data and…

Energy loss and straggling of MeV Si ions in gases

2017

We present measurements of energy loss and straggling of Si ions in gases. An energy range from 0.5 to 12 MeV/u was covered using the 6 MV EN tandem accelerator at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and the K130 cyclotron accelerator facility at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Our energy-loss data compare well with calculation based on the SRIM and PASS code. The new straggling measurements support a pronounced peak in He gas at around 4 MeV/u predicted by recent theoretical calculations. The straggling curve structure in the other gases (N2, Ne, Ar, Kr) is relatively flat in the covered energy range. Although there is a general agreement between the straggling data and the theoretical calculat…

Cooling of the plasma chamber for the AECR-U type electron cyclotron resonance ion source ARTEMIS

2001

Abstract The temperature distribution inside the ECRIS plasma chamber has been studied using finite element analysis. The main goal of these studies was to find out the safest cooling design for the temperature sensitive permanent magnets. In ECR ion sources they are used to provide the hexapole field. Two different designs for the cooling of the magnets were investigated. The temperature distribution on the surface of the plasma electrode was also studied. With the aid of the cooling simulations the most efficient cooling for the new ECR ion source was found. As a result of which, safety and higher reliability of operation can be reached.

Measurement and simulation of the pressure ratio between the two traps of double Penning trap mass spectrometers

2008

Penning traps are ideal tools to perform high-precision mass measurements. For this purpose the cyclotron frequency of the stored charged particles is measured. In case of on-line mass measurements of short-lived nuclides produced at radioactive beam facilities the ions get in general first prepared and cooled by buffer-gas collisions in a preparation trap to reduce their motional amplitudes and are then transported to a precision trap for the cyclotron frequency determination. In modern Penning trap mass spectrometers both traps are placed in the homogeneous region of one superconducting magnet to optimize the transport efficiency. Because the gas pressure inside the precision trap has to …

Technical challenges in the construction of the steady-state stellarator Wendelstein 7-X

2013

The next step in the Wendelstein stellarator line is the large superconducting device Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction in Greifswald, Germany. Steady-state operation is an intrinsic feature of stellarators, and one key element of the Wendelstein 7-X mission is to demonstrate steady-state operation under plasma conditions relevant for a fusion power plant. Steady-state operation of a fusion device, on the one hand, requires the implementation of special technologies, giving rise to technical challenges during the design, fabrication and assembly of such a device. On the other hand, also the physics development of steady-state operation at high plasma performance poses a challeng…

Ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping for a single-ended heavy ion ToF-ERDA facility

2023

We present the status of the ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping activities for a heavy ion time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA) equipment, designed to accelerate a flux of 1–10 particle nano-Ampere of 40Ar6-12+ ions to 3–6 MeV energy for depth profiling of light elements. The prototype injector consists of a novel permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source CUBE-ECRIS with a minimum-B quadrupole field topology, and a 90° permanent magnet dipole with adjustable field strength for charge state selection. We report experimentally measured argon beam currents as a function of the applied microwave power and ion source potential to demonstrat…

Study of radial motion phase advance during motion excitations in a Penning trap and accuracy of JYFLTRAP mass spectrometer

2021

Phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique has been implemented at the Penning-trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP and is routinely employed for mass measurements of stable and short-lived nuclides produced at IGISOL facility. Systematic uncertainties that impose limitations on the accuracy of measurements are discussed. It was found out that the phase evolution of the radial motion of ions in a Penning trap during the application of radio-frequency fields leads to a systematic cyclotron frequency shift when more than one ion species is present in the trap during the cyclotron frequency measurement. An analytic expression was derived to correctly account for the shift. Cross-reference mass…

Conversion electron spectroscopy at IGISOL

2012

Conversion elecron spectroscopy has been an important part of the nuclear spectrocopy research at the Department of Physics of the University of Jyv¨askyl¨a since the commissioning of the first cyclotron in the mid 1970s. At the IGISOL facility a specialiced conversion electron spectrometer ELLI was developed in the late 1980s. The first results with ELLI were obtained using the beams from the old MC-20 cyclotron to study newly discovered isotopes of refractory fission products. In the present K130 cyclotron laboratory ELLI has been utilized in many decay-spectroscopy experiments both neutron-deficient and neutron-rich side of the valley of stability. In the early 2000s the new JYFLTRAP ion…
