In libellulids, mature oocyte size varies within and between individual ovaries. The regulating mechanism is not yet understood. Variations in the contents of the follicle cells, and thereby their ability to secrete material into the oocyte, might explain some of the observed differences in oocyte size. We therefore investigated the follicle cell surface, the interstitial space width between follicle cells and between follicle cells and oocytes, the number of nuclei, and the cell compartment proportions using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Glutathione (GSH) is essential for survival of eukaryotic but not in prokaryotic cells. Its functions in nucleated cells are far from being known. In fact GSH plays an important role in cell proliferation. The purpose of the present review is to summarize the relationship between glutathione and the important events that take place in the nucleus during the cell cycle. Most GSH co-localizes with nuclear DNA when cells are proliferating. However, when cells were confluent no differences between nucleus and cytoplasm could be seen. Objectives: The aim of this report is to present the results of a scanning electron microscopic study on the presence of matrix vesicles (MVs) found in human dentine. Study Design: Dentin tissue from 20 human bicuspids was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Results: MVs were found as outgrowths of the cellular membrane of the odontoblastic body, the more proximal portion of the odontoblastic process before entering the dentinal tubule and in the odontoblastic process within the inner third of the dentin. The Process-inducing Activity of Transmembrane Agrin Requires Follistatin-like Domains

Clustering or overexpression of the transmembrane form of the extracellular matrix proteoglycan agrin in neurons results in the formation of numerous highly motile filopodia-like processes extending from axons and dendrites. Here we show that similar processes can be induced by overexpression of transmembrane-agrin in several non-neuronal cell lines. Mapping of the process-inducing activity in neurons and non-neuronal cells demonstrates that the cytoplasmic part of transmembrane agrin is dispensable and that the extracellular region is necessary for process formation. Severe neonatal onset of glycogenosis type IV: Clinical and laboratory findings leading to diagnosis in two siblings

Glycogenosis type IV is an autosomal recessive disease, exceptionally diagnosed at birth: only very few reports of the fatal perinatal neuromuscular form have been described. We report on two sibling male newborns who died at 10 and 4 weeks of age with clinical signs of a systemic storage disease. Prenatal history included polyhydramnios, reduced fetal movements and fetal hydrops, and Caesarean section was performed at 36 weeks of gestational age because of fetal distress. At birth, both babies showed severe hypotonia, hyporeflexia and no spontaneous breathing activity. GAL4-responsive UAS- tau as a tool for studying the anatomy and development of the Drosophila central nervous system

To improve the quality of cytoplasmic labelling of GAL4-expressing cells in Drosophila enhancer-trap and transgenic strains, a new GAL4-responsive reporter UAS-tau, which features a bovine tau cDNA under control of a yeast upstream activation sequence (UAS), was tested. Tau, a microtubule-associated protein, is distributed actively and evenly into all cellular processes. Monoclonal anti-bovine Tau antibody reveals the axonal structure of the labelled cells with detail similar to that of Golgi impregnation. We demonstrate that the UAS-tau system is especially useful for studying processes of differentiation and reorganisation of identified neurones during postembryonic development.
RPGR ORF15 isoform co-localizes with RPGRIP1 at centrioles and basal bodies and interacts with nucleophosmin

The ORF15 isoform of RPGR (RPGR(ORF15)) and RPGR interacting protein 1 (RPGRIP1) are mutated in a variety of retinal dystrophies but their functions are poorly understood. Here, we show that in cultured mammalian cells both RPGR(ORF15) and RPGRIP1 localize to centrioles. These localizations are resistant to the microtubule destabilizing drug nocodazole and persist throughout the cell cycle. RPGR and RPGRIP1 also co-localize at basal bodies in cells with primary cilia. The C-terminal (C2) domain of RPGR(ORF15) (ORF15(C2)) is highly conserved across 13 mammalian species, suggesting that it is a functionally important domain. Abstract The goal of the present article was to determine whether a nuclear parameter, centromere structure of interphase cells, could serve as an indicator to assess cellular damage caused by anti-tumor drugs. These were cis-platin and mafosfamide, which are widely used for the management of solid tumors. To visualize the centromeres, we probed treated and untreated cells of a human breast cancer cell line, MX-1, with a human anti-centromere serum. Since the lipid composition of the exosomal membrane resembles that of raft microdomains, the inward budding process involves the raft-like region of the MVB limiting membrane. Although published research suggests that cellular RNAs may be selectively sorted into exosomes, the molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Cells considered to be migratory in the cerebral cortex of adult lizards are ultrastructurally of two types. Nuclei in the first type have highly dispersed chromatin, creating a spongy appearance, whereas in the second type the chromatin is irregularly clumped. Both types of cells are closely associated with processes of radial ependymal glia cells, which perhaps orient their migratory pathways. Cells with spongy chromatin show an increase in cytoplasmic organelles and progressive chromatin condensation as they travel from the ependymal layer to the granular layer.
