Validity of multiplex biomarker model of 6 genes for the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules

2011

Abstract Background Currently the cytological examination of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies is the standard technique for the pre-operative differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. However, the results may be non-informative in ~20% of cases due to an inadequate sampling and the lack of highly specific, measurable cytological criteria, therefore ancillary biomarkers that could aid in these cases are clearly needed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the mRNA expression levels of 8 candidate marker genes as the diagnostic biomarkers for the discrimination of benign and malignant thyroid nodules and to find a combination of biomarkers with the highest diagnostic value. Materials an…

Correlations between the Presence of Hurthle Cells and Cytomorphological Features of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy in Thyroid Nodules

2019

INTRODUCTION: The presence of Hürthle cells (HC) in fine needle thyroid biopsy (FNAB) is a real concern for a cytologist and also for an endocrinologist. We aimed to demonstrate if the presence of HC is associated with specific cytological features in FNAB results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 89 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules, with FNAB; were two groups of patients: the study group A (HC+) (22 patients) with HC and control group B (HC-) (67 patients) with no HC; for both groups we analyzed the presence of 9 cytomorphologic features: overall cellularity, background colloid, lymphocyte infiltration, chronic inflammation, large nucleoli, small nucleoli, syn…

OR18-01 Effect of Teprotumumab on Proptosis Reduction Across Various Demographic Sub-Groups

2020

Abstract Introduction: Teprotumumab, an insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor inhibitory monoclonal antibody, was recently shown to significantly reduce proptosis in patients with active, moderate-to-severe thyroid eye disease (TED) in phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials.1,2 Prior analyses have demonstrated a combined trial proptosis response (≥2 mm reduction) rate of 77.4% in the teprotumumab group and 14.9% in the placebo group after 24 weeks of therapy (p < 0.001).3 The current analysis was performed to investigate whether or not patient demographic characteristics influence the teprotumumab proptosis response. Methods: Data from two 24-week randomized, double-masked, placebo-cont…

Verbal and academic skills in children with early-onset type 1 diabetes

2010

Aim  Basic verbal and academic skills can be adversely affected by early-onset diabetes, although these skills have been studied less than other cognitive functions. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of learning deficits in children with diabetes by assessing basic verbal and academic skills in children with early-onset diabetes and in comparison children. In addition, the incidence of dyslexia (≤10th centile in reading speed or reading–spelling accuracy) was studied. Method  The performance of 51 children with early-onset diabetes (25 females, 26 males; mean age 9y 11mo, SD 4mo; range 9–10y) was compared with that of 92 children without diabetes (40 females, 52 males; mean age 9y 1…

The Average State Complexity of the Star of a Finite Set of Words Is Linear

2008

We prove that, for the uniform distribution over all sets Xof m(that is a fixed integer) non-empty words whose sum of lengths is n, $\mathcal{D}_X$, one of the usual deterministic automata recognizing X*, has on average $\mathcal{O}(n)$ states and that the average state complexity of X*is i¾?(n). We also show that the average time complexity of the computation of the automaton $\mathcal{D}_X$ is $\mathcal{O}(n\log n)$, when the alphabet is of size at least three.

Designing Gesture-Based Control for Factory Automation

2013

We report the development and evaluation of a gesture-based interaction prototype for controlling the loading station of a factory automation system. In this context, gesture-based interaction has the potential to free users from the tedious physical controls but it must also account for safety considerations and users’ perceptions. We evaluated the gesture interaction concept in the field to understand its applicability to industrial settings. Our findings suggest that gesture-based interaction is an emotional, physically charged experience that has the potential to enhance the work process. Participants’ feedback also highlighted challenges related to the reliability of gesture recognitio…

Data on the conservation status of four rare plants of the Valencian flora (Allium subvillosum, Himantoglossum hircinum, Orchis purpurea and Serapias parviflora) are reported. The current situation of their known populations is commented, and they are also labelled according to the current I.U.C.N. categories.
