Dominant Lactic Acid Bacteria in Naturally Fermented Milks from Messinese Goat’s Breed
2019
Background: Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) are an important group of microorganisms responsible for the fermentation dairy products. This study was done to identify the dominant lactic acid bacteria in naturally fermented milks from Messinese goat’s breed. Methods: Eighteen individual raw milk samples collected from Messinese goat’s breed were acidified at pH 5.20 and left to spontaneously ferment at 37 °C for 4 days. All samples were analyzed for rod- and coccus-shaped LAB. Also, all presumptive LAB were isolated and differentiated according to their phenotypic properties and genetic polymorphisms and then identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Data were statistically analyzed using SAS 9…
Overview of methods used to evaluate the adequacy of nutrient intakes for individuals and populations
2009
The objective of the present paper is to review the methods of measuring micronutrient intake adequacy for individuals and for populations in order to ascertain best practice. A systematic review was conducted to locate studies on the methodological aspects of measuring nutrient adequacy. The results showed that for individuals, qualitative methods (to find probability of adequacy) and quantitative methods (to find confidence of adequacy) have been proposed for micronutrients where there is enough data to set an average nutrient requirement (ANR). If micronutrients do not have ANR, an adequate intake (AI) is often defined and can be used to assess adequacy, provided the distribution of dail…
The genetic heritage of Alpine local cattle breeds using genomic SNP data
2020
Abstract Background Assessment of genetic diversity and population structure provides important control metrics to avoid genetic erosion, inbreeding depression and crossbreeding between exotic and locally-adapted cattle breeds since these events can have deleterious consequences and eventually lead to extinction. Historically, the Alpine Arc represents an important pocket of cattle biodiversity with a large number of autochthonous breeds that provide a fundamental source of income for the entire regional economy. By using genotype data from medium-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays, we performed a genome-wide comparative study of 23 cattle populations from the Alpine Arc an…
On the origin and diversification of Podolian cattle breeds: testing scenarios of European colonization using genome-wide SNP data
2021
AbstractBackgroundDuring the Neolithic expansion, cattle accompanied humans and spread from their domestication centres to colonize the ancient world. In addition, European cattle occasionally intermingled with both indicine cattle and local aurochs resulting in an exclusive pattern of genetic diversity. Among the most ancient European cattle are breeds that belong to the so-called Podolian trunk, the history of which is still not well established. Here, we used genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data on 806 individuals belonging to 36 breeds to reconstruct the origin and diversification of Podolian cattle and to provide a reliable scenario of the European colonization, throug…
Positive Technologies for Improving Health and Well-Being
2017
In the last 20 years there have been two important developments of great importance to the field of psychological treatments. On the one hand, this meant the movement of positive psychology, and on the other, the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the daily clinical practice. In this paper a new field of study that attempts to strengthen ties and build bridges between them is introduced: Positive Technologies. This perspective seeks to promote the use of technology to foster personal growth and the development of human virtues and strengths, thus contributing to social and cultural development. In this chapter, we present four positive technologies: …
Analysis of thermal infrared data from the Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer
2001
Thermal infrared data of the Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (DAIS), whose channels 74-79 are in the 8-13 w m waveband region, were analysed with the aim of recovering land surface temperature (LST). DAIS images were acquired over an experimental site where field and laboratory emissivity measurements were performed, and these were used to recover the LST from the six DAIS thermal channels. Atmospheric correction of DAIS data was calculated by means of a nearby radiosounding and a radiative transfer model. DAIS derived LSTs were compared with ground measurements of LST made coincidentally for a few test fields, the central DAIS channels yielding temperatures up to 10°C higher than gro…
Colour assessment of milk and milk products using computer vision system and colorimeter
2021
Abstract A computer vision system (CVS) and a colorimeter were compared for their abilities to measure the colour of twenty-seven different milks and milk products. The frequency of similarity test showed that CVS-generated colour chips were similar to the actual sample colour in all trials (100%). The CVS-obtained colours were found to be more similar to the colour of sample visualised on the monitor, compared with colorimeter-generated colour chips, with values of 83.3–100.0% depending on the milk product. The third test showed that there was difference between colour measured by CVS and the colorimeter; colorimeter readings resulted in a darker and yellower colour based on average L∗a∗b∗…

Measuring Managers’ Perception of Innovation in the Romanian Hospitality Industry
2013
Abstract In the current economic environment, innovation is a common characteristic of both services and manufacturing enterprises. In the tourism sector innovation has become compulsory in the quest to achieve long term competitiveness. However, innovation is seldom assessed even after being integrated in the daily routine of tourism enterprises. The purpose of this article is to study the degree to which innovation is implemented in the Romanian hospitality industry by analyzing hotel managers’ perception on various types of innovations. The results offer an image on how innovative the hospitality industry is and on how innovation is fostered and achieved.
