A10.18 Lack of Association of Serum Interleukin-17 and Interleukin-23 Levels with Disease Activity in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis in Latvia

2013

Background Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a clinically well-known chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton and peripheral joints. The pathogenesis of this disease still remains a challenge. Determination of cytokine profile and its role involved in AS pathogenesis give an opportunity to extend the targeted therapeutic approach. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) and interleukin-23 (IL-23) are cytokines of interest in the investigation of the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritides although their importance in AS is not clearly defined. Objectives to investigate levels of IL-17 and IL-23 in a group of AS and in a demographically matched group of healthy subjects and its association with the diseas…

Physiological and Nutritional Roles of PPAR across Species.

2013

There has been a tremendous amount of information produced on peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). The interest in PPARs was originally driven largely by their role in hypolipidemia and hepatocarcinogenesis, but it soon became evident that they played important roles in the metabolic syndrome and overall health of organisms including regeneration of tissues, differentiation, insulin signaling, overall lipid metabolism, and immune response (reviewed in [1–7]). From a nutritional standpoint, the PPARs are of extreme importance because of their ability to bind and be activated by long-chain fatty acids and their metabolites. Therefore, the PPARs are recognized as ideal candidat…

The implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis in Spain without women

2018

Comparison of physical activity and sedentary behaviours between young haemophilia A patients and healthy adolescents

2011

In recent studies, adolescent haemophilia A patients and healthy adolescents have been encouraged to participate in physical activity (PA) based on its many established health benefits. However, none of the studies to date has used objective measures of PA and sedentary behaviour. The aims of the current study included: (i) to determine the amount and intensity of habitual PA among haemophilia A and healthy adolescents, and in haemophilia A patients with and without bleeding episodes in the previous year, and (ii) to identify the type and determine the time spent in sedentary activities in which both groups participate to obtain a broadened view of their daily activities. A total of 41 adol…

Detecting impaired language processing in patients with mild cognitive impairment using around‐the‐ear cEEgrid electrodes

2021

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the term used to identify those individuals with subjective and objective cognitive decline but with preserved activities of daily living and an absence of dementia. Although MCI can impact functioning in different cognitive domains, most notably episodic memory, relatively little is known about the comprehension of language in MCI. In this study, we used around-the-ear electrodes (cEEGrids) to identify impairments during language comprehension in patients with MCI. In a group of 23 patients with MCI and 23 age-matched controls, language comprehension was tested in a two-word phrase paradigm. We examined the oscillatory changes following word onset as a fu…

Tear Film Surface Quality in Modern Daily Disposable Contact Lens Wear

2021

Objectives As reported previously, tear film surface quality (TFSQ) should be considered in contact lens (CL) fitting. This study followed noninvasive keratograph tear film break-up time (NIKBUT) in CL wearers for 12 months to validate its clinical utility in predicting CL performance. Methods Fifty-five subjects (M/F=17/38) aged 26±4 years were prescribed silicone hydrogel or hydrogel CLs. The study included baseline measurements without CLs; 2 visits for CL fitting and control; follow-up after 3, 6, and 12 months of CL wear; and postwear visit without CLs. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 8-Item Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8), first and mean NIKBUT (F/M-NIKBUT), fluoresc…

Health outcomes and costs in patients with osteoarthritis and chronic pain treated with opioids in Spain: the OPIOIDS real-world study.

2020

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze health outcomes, resource utilization, and costs in osteoarthritis patients with chronic nociceptive pain who began treatment with an opioid in real-world practice in Spain. Methods: We designed a non-interventional, retrospective, longitudinal study with 36 months of follow-up using electronic medical records (EMRs) from primary care centers, of patients aged 18+ years who began a new treatment with an opioid drug in usual practice for chronic pain due to osteoarthritis. Health/non-health resource utilization and costs, treatment adherence, pain change, cognitive functioning, and dependence for basic activities of daily living (BADL) we…

Exercise for fitness does not decrease the muscular inactivity time during normal daily life

2012

The time spent in sedentary behaviors has been shown to be independent of exercise in epidemiological studies. We examined within an individual whether exercise alters the time of muscular inactivity within his/her normal daily life. Quadriceps and hamstring muscle electromyographic activities and heart rate were measured during 1 to 6 days of normal daily living of ordinary people. Of 84 volunteers measured, 27 (15 men, 12 women, 40.7 years ± 16.5 years) fulfilled the criteria of having at least 1 day with and 1 day without exercise for fitness (total of 87 days analyzed, 13.0 h ± 2.5 h/day). Reported exercises varied from Nordic walking to strength training and ball games lasting 30 min-1…

Emotional Distress Following Childbirth: An Intervention to Buffer Depressive and PTSD Symptoms.

2015

Childbirth for some women is a negative experience associated with depressive and post-traumatic symptoms. The preventive actions focusing on helping mothers to cope with negative emotions experienced after childbirth are strongly recommended. It is also recommended both to intervene early and on all women to avoid the risk that these symptoms can worsen in the months after childbirth. The intervention described in the current study is focalized on the elaboration of post-partum negative thoughts and emotion through a writing task, with the purpose to help new mothers to reflect, understand, evaluate and, thus, reformulate the stressful situation with new beliefs and emotions. 176 women age…

Ambient carbon monoxide and daily mortality:a global time-series study in 337 cities

2021

Background Epidemiological evidence on short-term association between ambient carbon monoxide (CO) and mortality is inconclusive and limited to single cities, regions, or countries. Generalisation of results from previous studies is hindered by potential publication bias and different modelling approaches. We therefore assessed the association between short-term exposure to ambient CO and daily mortality in a multicity, multicountry setting. Methods We collected daily data on air pollution, meteorology, and total mortality from 337 cities in 18 countries or regions, covering various periods from 1979 to 2016. All included cities had at least 2 years of both CO and mortality data. We estimat…
