Stochastic seismic analysis of structures with nonlinear viscous dampers
2007
Fluid damper devices inserted in buildings or bridges are commonly used as energy sinks for seismic protection. In the response analysis of structures with filled damper devices the main problem exists in the strong nonlinear behavior of such equipment, as a consequence the differential equation of motion remains nonlinear and the response spectrum analysis still cannot be applied. In this note, by using the concept of power spectral density function coherent with the elastic response spectrum and by using the statistical linearization technique, expressions for finding the equivalent linear damping have been found. Comparisons with results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations confirm that f…
An investigation of the influence of the macroscopic heterogeneity on the thermoelstic response of fibre reinforced plastics
2005
In this work the influence of the inherent heterogeneity in fibre reinforced plastic composites on the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the thermoelastic signal is discussed. The role of two different levels of heterogeneity is identified, distinguishing between a micro-geometric scale characterized by the presence of different constituent materials, and a macro-geometric scale characterized by a non-uniform distribution of these constituents. Attention has been focused on the macro-scale level, presenting results of experiments performed on glass fibre - polyester resin samples, intended to highlight the influence on the thermoelastic signal of the fabric texture pattern and the …

Quantum fluctuations and coherence in high-precision single-electron capture.
2012
The phase of a single quantum state is undefined unless the history of its creation provides a reference point. Thus quantum interference may seem hardly relevant for the design of deterministic single-electron sources which strive to isolate individual charge carriers quickly and completely. We provide a counterexample by analyzing the non-adiabatic separation of a localized quantum state from a Fermi sea due to a closing tunnel barrier. We identify the relevant energy scales and suggest ways to separate the contributions of quantum non-adiabatic excitation and backtunneling to the rare non-capture events. In the optimal regime of balanced decay and non-adiabaticity, our simple electron tr…

2015
La presente invenzione si riferisce ad un nuovo dispositivo di smorzamento del rollio, inseribile e disinseribile, per imbarcazioni all’ancora o alla deriva con motori spenti. Novel roll damping device for a vessel, in particular when the vessel is anchored or drifting with the engines off
Thermoelastic stress analysis by means of an infrared scanner and a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform-based lock-in technique
2008
An infrared thermographic experimental set-up has been proposed and evaluated towards the capability to measure thermoelastic-effect-induced temperature changes. A standard infrared thermocamera with a nominal noise-equivalent temperature difference (NETD) resolution of 0.12 K has been employed to measure the temperature from unidirectional glass-reinforced plastic tensile coupons under cyclic sinusoidal loads. The raster scanning mode of the camera single detector produces a time delay in acquiring the signal from two succeeding pixels on the same row, and from consecutive scanned rows. By exploiting the acquired dwell times, it was possible to produce a periodic pattern on the thermal ma…
Entanglement robustness via spatial deformation of identical particle wave functions
2021
We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. After the interaction, we deform the wave functions of the two qubits to make them spatially overlap before performing spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC) and eventually computing the entanglement of the resulting state. This way, we show tha…
Pythium perplexum isolated from soil in France: morphology, molecular characterisation and biological control.
2001
Pythium perplexum (F-926) was isolated from a soil sample taken in the Burgundy region in France. In 1907, it was mistakenly described by Bulter as P. vexans. Despite morphological resemblance, the comparison between the internal transcribed spacer 1 regions of the ribosomal DNA of the two fungi leaves no doubt of their different identities. P. perplexum was found to be highly pathogenic to cucumber seedlings. Damping-off disease of cucumber caused by P. perplexum can effectively be controlled by using the soil bacterium Serratia plymuthica (B-781). The details of the morphology and the molecular characterisation of P. perplexum and its biological control with S. plymuthica are described he…
Population trapping due to cavity losses
2008
In population trapping the occupation of a decaying quantum level keeps a constant non-zero value. We show that an atom-cavity system interacting with an environment characterized by a non-flat spectrum, in the non-Markovian limit, exhibits such a behavior, effectively realizing the preservation of nonclassical states against dissipation. Our results allow to understand the role of cavity losses in hybrid solid state systems and pave the way to the proper description of leakage in the recently developed cavity quantum electrodynamic systems.
Experimental Survey on Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete for Sub-ballast Layers
2012
The railway traffic through a town or near built-up areas causes heavy effects such as noise and vibration on surroundings. In order to minimize the level of these impacts the railway companies with researchers and practitioners seek suitable solutions especially in the field of the rail-track because the main source of the ground borne vibrations and noise is the bad wheel-track contact. In particular, a big effort is addressed to new materials with high mechanical and environmental performance that can be utilized within the sub-ballast layer. This paper presents the results of an experimental survey on the potential application of Dry Asphalt Rubber Concrete (DARC) in sub-ballast layers …
