The effect of wavelet and discrete cosine transform compression of digital radiographs on the detection of subtle proximal caries. ROC analysis.

2007

The study compared diagnostic performances of 2 different image compression methods: JPEG (discrete cosine transform; Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard) versus JPEG2000 (discrete wavelet transform), both at a compression ratio of 12:1, from the original uncompressed TIFF radiograph with respect to the detection of non-cavitated carious lesions. Therefore, 100 approximal surfaces of 50 tooth pairs were evaluated on the radiographs by 10 experienced observers using a 5-point confidence scale. Observations were carried out on a standardized viewing monitor under subdued light conditions. The proportion of diseased surfaces was balanced to approximately 50% to avoid bias. Tr…

P2D: a self-supervised method for depth estimation from polarimetry

2021

Monocular depth estimation is a recurring subject in the field of computer vision. Its ability to describe scenes via a depth map while reducing the constraints related to the formulation of perspective geometry tends to favor its use. However, despite the constant improvement of algorithms, most methods exploit only colorimetric information. Consequently, robustness to events to which the modality is not sensitive to, like specularity or transparency, is neglected. In response to this phenomenon, we propose using polarimetry as an input for a self-supervised monodepth network. Therefore, we propose exploiting polarization cues to encourage accurate reconstruction of scenes. Furthermore, we…

An efficient hardware implementation of Diamond Search motion estimation using CAL dataflow language

2011

Motion estimation represents a key module in video compression. The Reconfigurable Video Coding context (RVC) requires proposing a flexible solution for motion estimation. The motion estimation performance should be modified to fit with the user or the environment's constraints. Depending on the required performances fixed by the application, a full search is sometimes not suitable, hence, alternative fast/reduced solutions should be considered. In this paper, an efficient Diamond Search motion estimation, described in RVC-CAL actor language, is introduced. Starting from a high level description based CAL language, an automatic translation of the proposed CAL module to HDL is performed. Thi…

Use of H.264 real-time video encoding to reduce display wall system bandwidth consumption

2015

This paper compares the DXT and JPEG image compression techniques used in display wall solutions SAGE and DisplayCluster with hardware accelerated H.264 video encoding that is used in the display wall system developed by the authors of this paper. The obtained processing power usage and generated bandwidth measurements presented in this paper demonstrate that hardware accelerated H.264 encoding offers multiple benefits over software implemented H.264, DXT and JPEG.

Bluetooth-3G wireless transmission system for neural signal telemetry

2007

In this contribution a wireless transmission system for neural signals is developed. This system includes data compression algorithms at the information source, namely neural signals recorded by micro-electrode arrays. The signals are transmitted over Bluetooth to a mobile device that, without any processing or storing, retransmits it over 3G to a remote server where signal post-processing and analysis is performed. The overall transmission rate of the system is limited by the Bluetooth link between the information source and the mobile phone, as well as by the limited processing capabilities of the mobile device and also by the 3G-link. Data compression allows the transmission of up to 7 n…

New techniques for visualization of losses due to image compression in grayscale medical still images

2003

To evaluate the visual influence of irreversible compression on medical images, changes of the images have to be visualized. The authors have explored alternative techniques to be used instead of the usual side-by-side comparison, where the information contained in both images is perceived in a single image, preserving the context between compression errors and image structures. Thus fast and easy comparison can be done. These techniques make use of the human ability to perceive information also in the dimensions of color, space, and time. A study was performed with JPEG-compressed coronary angiographic images. Changes in the resulting images for six compression factors from 7 to 30 were sc…

On the Design of Fast Wavelet Transform Algorithms With Low Memory Requirements

2008

In this paper, a new algorithm to efficiently compute the two-dimensional wavelet transform is presented. This algorithm aims at low memory consumption and reduced complexity, meeting these requirements by means of line-by-line processing. In this proposal, we use recursion to automatically place the order in which the wavelet transform is computed. This way, we solve some synchronization problems that have not been tackled by previous proposals. Furthermore, unlike other similar proposals, our proposal can be straightforwardly implemented from the algorithm description. To this end, a general algorithm is given which is further detailed to allow its implementation with a simple filter bank…

Kolmogorov superposition theorem for image compression

2012

International audience; The authors present a novel approach for image compression based on an unconventional representation of images. The proposed approach is different from most of the existing techniques in the literature because the compression is not directly performed on the image pixels, but is rather applied to an equivalent monovariate representation of the wavelet-transformed image. More precisely, the authors have considered an adaptation of Kolmogorov superposition theorem proposed by Igelnik and known as the Kolmogorov spline network (KSN), in which the image is approximated by sums and compositions of specific monovariate functions. Using this representation, the authors trad…

Cost-driven framework for progressive compression of textured meshes

2019

International audience; Recent advances in digitization of geometry and radiometry generate in routine massive amounts of surface meshes with texture or color attributes. This large amount of data can be compressed using a progressive approach which provides at decoding low complexity levels of details (LoDs) that are continuously refined until retrieving the original model. The goal of such a progressive mesh compression algorithm is to improve the overall quality of the transmission for the user, by optimizing the rate-distortion trade-off. In this paper, we introduce a novel meaningful measure for the cost of a progressive transmission of a textured mesh by observing that the rate-distor…

Bandwidth Resource Management for Neural Signal Telemetry

2009

Recent advances in modern neurocomputing have shown the utmost necessity of wireless communication systems that allow real-time (RT) monitoring of neural signals meeting several requirements such as source compression and high fidelity of the received signal. Neural recordings require multielectrode probes with up to hundreds of electrodes and transmission of signals wirelessly over a limited bandwidth (BW). In this paper, a RT resource management algorithm is proposed so that adequate source compression is applied to each channel in order to fit them into the available BW. Performance of the algorithm is analyzed using dynamically changing BW and neural recordings with different neural act…
