EEG Data Quality: Determinants and Impact in a Multicenter Study of Children, Adolescents, and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (…

2021

Electroencephalography (EEG) represents a widely established method for assessing altered and typically developing brain function. However, systematic studies on EEG data quality, its correlates, and consequences are scarce. To address this research gap, the current study focused on the percentage of artifact-free segments after standard EEG pre-processing as a data quality index. We analyzed participant-related and methodological influences, and validity by replicating landmark EEG effects. Further, effects of data quality on spectral power analyses beyond participant-related characteristics were explored. EEG data from a multicenter ADHD-cohort (age range 6 to 45 years), and a non-ADHD sc…

Real-world EUROCRINE® registry data challenge the reliability of Bethesda cytopathology for thyroid surgery indication

2021

Abstract Objectives Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is recommended by international guidelines for the preoperative evaluation of suspicious thyroid nodules >1 cm. Despite robust evidence from endocrine centers demonstrating the key role of FNAC results for the indication of surgery, the method is not routinely used in European clinics. The database EUROCRINE®, which was introduced in 2015 with the scope of registering operations of the endocrine system, allows for a large-scale analysis of the current service reality in Europe concerning FNAC use and associated accuracy. Methods Operations performed to “exclude malignancy”, registered from January 2015 to December 2018 in EUROCRI…

Augmenting–reducing paradox lost? A test of Davis et al.'s (1983) hypothesis

2002

Abstract The aim of the experiment was to test Davis et al.'s [Davis, C., Cowles, M., & Kohn, P. (1983). Strength of the nervous system and augmenting–reducing: paradox lost. Personality and Individual Differences, 4, 491–498.] hypothesis, that Petrie-style reducers become evoked potential (EP) augmenters at high intensities. Central, autonomic, and subjective responses to auditory stimuli of five intensities from 65 to 105 dB(A) were recorded in subjects classified as augmenters/reducers according to the Vando reducer–augmenter scale (RAS). Forty-five white noise stimuli of each intensity were presented. EEG, ECG, EDA, subjective and behavioral data were recorded. It was hypothezised that …

Magnification in apical surgerymusing the endoscope: a review

2011

Objective: A review is made to determine whether the use of the endoscope in endodontic surgery offers advantages in clinical practice, and whether it improves the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the procedure. Material and methods: The main search terms used were: endodontic surgery, apicoectomy, apical surgery, endoscope, and magnification devices . The authors searched the Medline database for articles published up to 1 September 2010. The review included experimental studies comparing endoscopic microstructural findings with the findings of the naked eye or other magnification devices, as well as prospective clinical trials comparing endodontic surgery with or without the use of a…

Can Early Postoperative O-(2-18FFluoroethyl)-l-Tyrosine Positron Emission Tomography After Resection of Glioblastoma Predict the Location of Later Tu…

2019

Objective Glioblastoma inevitably recurs despite aggressive therapy. Therefore, it would be helpful to predict the location of tumor recurrence from postoperative imaging to customize further treatment. O-(2-18Ffluoroethyl)- l -tyrosine (FET) positron emission tomography (PET) might be a helpful technique, because tumor tissue can be differentiated from normal brain tissue with high specificity. Methods Thirty-two consecutive patients with perioperative and follow-up imaging data available were included. On postoperative FET-PET, the tumor/normal brain (TTB) ratio around the resection cavity borders was measured. Increased TTB ratios were recorded and anatomically correlated with the site o…

Associated Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS) Registry: What Have We Learned?

2020

In 2007, the first associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) procedure was performed in Regensburg, Germany. ALPPS is a variation of two-stage hepatectomy to induce rapid liver hypertrophy allowing the removal of large tumors otherwise considered irresectable due to a too small future liver remnant. In 2012, the international ALPPS registry was created, and it now contains more than 1,000 cases. During the past years, improved patient selection and refinements in operative techniques, in particular, less invasive approaches such as Partial ALPPS, Tourniquet ALPPS, Ablation-assisted ALPPS, Hybrid ALPPS or Laparoscopic or Robotic approaches, have resu…

Simple bone cyst : description of 60 cases seen at a Brazilian School of Dentistry and review of international literature

2020

Background The aim of this study was to describe the relative frequency and the main demographic and clinic-radiographic features related to patients diagnosed with Simple bone cyst (SBC) in an Oral Diagnosis Service in Southeast Brazil and present a review and discussion of international literature on this topic. Material and Methods SBC cases from our service encompassing the period between 1978 and 2017 were selected. In addition, a literature search was performed in the Pubmed/MEDLINE online electronic database published between 1951 and 2019. Results A total of 2,459 cystic lesions were documented in our service, thus 60 patients were diagnosed with the SBC representing 2.4% of all jaw…

Improved femoral neck BMD in older Finnish women between 2002 and 2010.

2013

Abstract Purpose The number of hip fractures among Finns over 50-years of age rose constantly between 1970 and 1997, but since then, there has been a nationwide decline in incidence of hip fractures. One possible explanation, although not the only one, for the declining fracture rates, could be improved bone mineral density (BMD). The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in femoral neck BMD between older Finnish women born about a decade apart. Methods We compared the baseline data of two population-based samples of home-dwelling 70–80-year-old women who were initially recruited in exercise intervention studies ( N  = 216 in Cohort1, and N  = 389 in Cohort 2). Femoral neck BMD was …

The long and winding road of non steroidal antinflammatory drugs and paracetamol in cancer pain management: A critical review

2013

The aim of this review was to assess the value of NSAIDs and paracetamol in patients with cancer pain to update a previous review performed ten years ago on this topic. The approach was analytic and based on clinical considerations, rather than on raw evidence, which often does not provide useful information in clinical practice. Both published reports from an extensive search of electronic data bases were collected from January 2001 to December 2011. A free-text search method was used including the following words and their combination: “Anti-inflammatory drugs OR paracetamol OR acetaminophen” AND/OR “cancer pain”. Any randomized-controlled trial was considered. Thirteen reports fulfitted …

Impact of a physician-targeted letter on opioid prescribing.

2020

We study the effect of a physician-targeted nudge letter on opioid prescribing. In May 2017, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland sent a personal information letter to all physicians who had issued a prescription containing at least 100 tablets of paracetamol-codeine combination to a new patient. The aim of the letter was to draw the physicians’ attention to their prescribing practices and to decrease the size of the first codeine prescription. Using individual level register data and a difference-in-differences strategy, we estimate that the letter decreased the average number of tablets purchased by new patients by 12.5 percent and the probability of a first purchase being at least…
