Representation theory treatment of measurement semantics for ratio, ordinal and nominal scales
1997
Within the scope of the representational theory a formal framework for description of semantic aspects of measurement on different scales is proposed. This is done by means of a first-order formal logical system consisting of a set of empirical predicates which play the part of a data structure in the framework, a set of operations by means of which syntactically correct statements can be formed; a set of axioms being true statements and a set of numerical statements which is an aggregation of potential measurement results carrying a meaningful load. On this basis the notation of semantic information on various scales is introduced and some common claims about the measurement semantic infor…
A Representation of Relational Systems
2003
In this paper elements of a theory of multistructures are formulated. The theory of multistructures is used to define a binary representation of relational systems.
Multi-Dimensional motivic pattern extraction founded on adaptive redundancy filtering
2005
Abstract We present a computational model for discovering repeated patterns in symbolic representations of monodic music. Patterns are discovered through an incremental adaptive identification along a multi-dimensional parametric space. The difficulties of pattern discovery mainly come from combinatorial redundancies, that our model is able to control efficiently. A specificity relation is defined between pattern descriptions, unifying suffix and inclusion relations and enabling a filtering of redundant descriptions. Combinatorial proliferation caused by successive repetitions of patterns is managed using cyclic patterns. The modelling of these redundancy control mechanisms enables an autom…
Multiple Usage of Random Bits in Finite Automata
2012
Finite automata with random bits written on a separate 2-way readable tape can recognize languages not recognizable by probabilistic finite automata. This shows that repeated reading of random bits by finite automata can have big advantages over one-time reading of random bits.
Query automata
1999
A main task in document transformation and information retrieval is locating subtrees satisfying some pattern. Therefore, unary queries, i.e., queries that map a tree to a set of its nodes, play an important role in the context of structured document databases. We want to understand how the natural and well-studied computation model of tree automata can be used to compute such queries. We define a query automaton (QA) as a deterministic two-way finite automaton over trees that has the ability to select nodes depending on the state and the label at those nodes. We study QAs over ranked as well as over unranked trees. Unranked trees differ from ranked ones in that there is no bound on the num…
Gibbs equation in the nonlinear nonequilibrium thermodynamics of dilute nonviscous gases
2003
AbstractThis paper deals with the derivation of the Gibbs equation for a nonviscous gas in the presence of heat flux. The analysis aims to shed some light on the physical interpretation of thermodynamic potentials far from equilibrium. Two different definitions for the chemical potential and thermodynamic pressure far from equilibrium are introduced: nonequilibrium chemical potential and nonequilibrium thermodynamic pressure at constant heat flux q and nonequilibrium chemical potential and nonequilibrium thermodynamic pressure at constant J = Vq, where V is the specific volume.
Spatial joins
2019
The spatial join is a popular operation in spatial database systems and its evaluation is a well-studied problem. This paper reviews research and recent trends on spatial join evaluation. The complexity of different data types, the consideration of different join predicates, the use of modern commodity hardware, and support for parallel processing open the road to a number of interesting directions for future research, some of which we outline in the paper.
Understanding team coordination in doubles table tennis: Joint analysis of first- and third-person data
2012
Abstract Objectives This study sought to determine whether combining first- and third-person methodologies would provide insight into team coordination. Design and methods We studied the activity of a table tennis doubles team during an official match. We collected and processed the verbal data according to a procedure defined for course-of-experience analysis, but we also included a video-based field study of the partners' interactions during the breaks between points. We then conducted a joint analysis of the two players' lived experience and behaviors during these short breaks. Results The results showed both the difficulties and the empirical richness of this approach. For example, the …
A two miRNA classifier differentiates follicular thyroid carcinomas from follicular thyroid adenomas.
2015
The inherent diagnostic limitations of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA), especially in the "indeterminate" category, can be partially overcome by molecular analyses. We aimed at the identification of miRNAs that could be used to improve the discrimination of indeterminate FNAs. miRNA expression profiling was performed for 17 follicular carcinomas (FTCs) and 8 follicular adenomas (FAs). The microarray results underwent cross-comparison using three additional microarray data sets. Candidate miRNAs were validated by qPCR in an independent set of 32 FTCs and 46 FAs. Sixty-eight differentially expressed miRNAs were identified. Thirteen miRNAs could be confirmed by cross comparison. A two-miR…
Unveiling distribution patterns of freshwater phytoplankton by a next generation sequencing based approach.
2012
The recognition and discrimination of phytoplankton species is one of the foundations of freshwater biodiversity research and environmental monitoring. This step is frequently a bottleneck in the analytical chain from sampling to data analysis and subsequent environmental status evaluation. Here we present phytoplankton diversity data from 49 lakes including three seasonal surveys assessed by next generation sequencing (NGS) of 16S ribosomal RNA chloroplast and cyanobacterial gene amplicons and also compare part of these datasets with identification based on morphology. Direct comparison of NGS to microscopic data from three time-series showed that NGS was able to capture the seasonality in…
