Child-centered and teacher-directed practices in relation to calculation and word problem solving skills

2019

Abstract This study examined transactional associations between classroom-level math skills and teaching practices. Participants were 523 children from 31 classrooms. Math skills were assessed three times. Teaching practices were observed in Grades 1 and 3. Child-centered practices promoted subsequent calculation skills whereas teacher-directed practices were associated with a lower level of calculation skills. Higher problem-solving skills at Grade 2 predicted more child-centered practices and less teacher-directed practices in third grade. Moreover, calculation skills mediated the effect of child-centered practices on problem-solving skills. The results suggest that teaching practices and…

Areas of research and clinical approaches to the study of liver abscess

2016

AIM To analyze the research activity on liver abscess (LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the area. METHODS We identified all documents using the medical subject heading "LA" indexed in the MEDLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest (case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify th…

(1Z,3Z)-3-[Quinolin-2(1H)-ylidene]-1-(quinolin-2-yl)prop-1-en-2-ol: An unexpected most stable tautomer of 1,3-bis(quinolin-2-yl)acetone

2009

Abstract 1 H, 13 C and 15 N NMR spectra reveal that CDCl 3 solution of 1,3-bis(quinolin-2-yl)acetone contains only ( 1Z , 3Z )-3-[quinolin-2(1 H )-ylidene]-1-(quinolin-2-yl)prop-1-en-2-ol. The proton transfer takes place between two basic centers of the molecule, which means that the process is an identity reaction by character. The situation is completely different from that detected in chloroform solution of 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)acetone where three different tautomers are in equilibrium with each other. Although the proton transfers in both ( 1Z , 3Z )-3-[quinolin-2(1 H )-ylidene]-1-(quinolin-2-yl)prop-1-en-2-ol and ( 1Z , 3Z )-3-hydroxy-1-[quinolin-2(1 H )-ylidene-4-quinolin-2-yl]but-3-e…

Approaches to characterise chromatographic column performance based on global parameters accounting for peak broadening and skewness.

2009

Peak broadening and skewness are fundamental parameters in chromatography, since they affect the resolution capability of a chromatographic column. A common practice to characterise chromatographic columns is to estimate the efficiency and asymmetry factor for the peaks of one or more solutes eluted at selected experimental conditions. This has the drawback that the extra-column contributions to the peak variance and skewness make the peak shape parameters depend on the retention time. We propose and discuss here the use of several approaches that allow the estimation of global parameters (non-dependent on the retention time) to describe the column performance. The global parameters arise f…

A complementary mobile phase approach based on the peak count concept oriented to the full resolution of complex mixtures

2011

Situations of minimal resolution are often found in liquid chromatography, when samples that contain a large number of compounds, or highly similar in terms of structure and/or polarity, are analysed. This makes full resolution with a single separation condition (e.g., mobile phase, gradient or column) unfeasible. In this work, the optimisation of the resolution of such samples in reversed-phase liquid chromatography is approached using two or more isocratic mobile phases with a complementary resolution behaviour (complementary mobile phases, CMPs). Each mobile phase is dedicated to the separation of a group of compounds. The CMPs are selected in such a way that, when the separation is cons…

SilicaROD™ — A new challenge in fast high-performance liquid chromatography separations

1998

Abstract High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has become one of the most used methods for the analysis of compound mixtures in industry, especially for the quality control of products. Nowadays productivity is the major and dominant upcoming issue, i.e. the goal is to drastically reduce the analysis time and cost per analysis. The solution of the task is higher throughput and faster HPLC methods. Here we describe a new monolithic type of HPLC column, the SilicaROD™ column, which permits the fast HPLC separation of compound mixtures within a few minutes.

Column technology in liquid chromatography

2017

This chapter deals with the most important part of the liquid chromatography (LC) system: the column enabling the efficient and fast resolution of complex mixtures. It is divided into seven sections under the overall aspects of manufacture, operation, and evaluation of analytical columns for the user. The first three sections highlight the column design and hardware, followed by a thorough treatment of the properties of microparticulate silica adsorbents as packing material, stationary phases performed by surface functionalization, and the column filling process. Then, the implementation of the column into the LC system is discussed, leading into chromatographic column testing as a C18-bond…

Effect of pruning-derived biochar on heavy metals removal and water dynamics

2014

Biomass-derived biochar is considered as a promising heavy metal adsorbent, due to abundance of polar functional groups, such as carboxylic, hydroxyl, and amino groups, which are available for heavy metal removal. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of an orchard pruning-derived biochar in removing some heavy metals (through the evaluation of isotherms) and to study water dynamics at the solid-liquid interface as affected by heavy metal adsorption (through an innovative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach). Both isotherms and NMR spectra revealed that Pb and Cr showed a good affinity for the biochar surface (Pb > Cr), while Cu was less affine. Accordi…
