Applications and Limitations of Robust Bayesian Bounds and Type II MLE

1994

Three applications of robust Bayesian analysis and three examples of its limitations are given. The applications that are reviewed are the development of an automatic Ockham’s Razor, outlier detection, and analysis of weighted distributions. Limitations of robust Bayesian bounds are highlighted through examples that include analysis of a paranormal experiment and a hierarchical model. This last example shows a disturbing difference between actual hierarchical Bayesian analysis and robust Bayesian bounds, a difference which also arises if, instead, a Type II MLE or empirical Bayes analysis is performed.

Sub-symbolic Encoding of Words

2003

A new methodology for sub-symbolic semantic encoding of words is presented. The methodology uses the WordNet lexical database and an ad hoc modified Sammon algorithm to associate a vector to each word in a semantic n-space. All words have been grouped according to the WordNet lexicographers’ files classification criteria: these groups have been called lexical sets. The word vector is composed by two parts: the first one, takes into account the belonging of the word to one of these lexical sets; the second one is related to the meaning of the word and it is responsible for distinguishing the word among the other ones of the same lexical set. The application of the proposed technique over all…

CoCoDat: a database system for organizing and selecting quantitative data on single neurons and neuronal microcircuitry.

2004

We present a novel database system for organizing and selecting quantitative experimental data on single neurons and neuronal microcircuitry that has proven useful for reference-keeping, experimental planning and computational modelling. Building on our previous experience with large neuroscientific databases, the system takes into account the diversity and method-dependence of single cell and microcircuitry data and provides tools for entering and retrieving published data without a priori interpretation or summarizing. Data representation is based on the framework suggested by biophysical theory and enables flexible combinations of data on membrane conductances, ionic and synaptic current…

Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos Through Optical Flow

2021

Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed. The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it to register one view onto the other both geometrically …

Precision and practical usefulness of intraoral scanners in implant dentistry : a systematic literature review

2020

Background: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of digital impression techniques for implant-supported restorations, and to assess their economic feasibility. Material and Methods: Two independent electronic database searches were conducted in the Pubmed/MedLine, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs databases complimented by a manual search, selecting relevant clinical and in vitro studies published between 1st January 2009 and 28st February 2019. All type of studies (in vivo and in vitro) were included in this systematic review. Results: Twenty-seven studies (8 in vivo and 19 in vitro studies) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. No meta-analysis was performed due to …

MIPPIE: the mouse integrated protein–protein interaction reference

2020

Abstract Cells operate and react to environmental signals thanks to a complex network of protein–protein interactions (PPIs), the malfunction of which can severely disrupt cellular homeostasis. As a result, mapping and analyzing protein networks are key to advancing our understanding of biological processes and diseases. An invaluable part of these endeavors has been the house mouse (Mus musculus), the mammalian model organism par excellence, which has provided insights into human biology and disorders. The importance of investigating PPI networks in the context of mouse prompted us to develop the Mouse Integrated Protein–Protein Interaction rEference (MIPPIE). MIPPIE inherits a robust infr…

A fractional-order model for aging materials: An application to concrete

2018

Abstract In this paper, the hereditariness of aging materials is modeled within the framework of fractional calculus of variable order. A relevant application is made for the long-term behavior of concrete, for which the creep function is evaluated with the aid of Model B3. The corresponding relaxation function is derived through the Volterra iterated kernels and a comparison with the numerically-obtained relaxation function of Model B3 is also reported. The proposed fractional hereditary aging model (FHAM) for concretes leads to a relaxation function that fully agrees with the well-established Model B3. Furthermore, the FHAM takes full advantage of the formalism of fractional-order calculu…

Magnetoelectric effect in mixed valency oxides mediated by charge carriers

2008

We show that the presence of free carriers in a substance can generate the multiferroic behavior. Namely, if the substance has mixed-valence ions, which can supply free carriers and have electric dipole and spin moments, all three types of long-range order (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric (ME)) can occur at low temperature. The physical origin of the effect is that charge carriers can mediate the multiferroic behavior via spin - spin (RKKY), dipole-dipole and dipole - spin interactions. Our estimate of the interaction magnitude shows that there exist an optimal carrier concentration, at which the strength of ME interaction is maximal and comparable to that of spin-spin RKKY…

The enhancement of ferromagnetism in uniaxially stressed diluted magnetic semiconductors

2003

We predict a new mechanism of enhancement of ferromagnetic phase transition temperature $T_c$ in uniaxially stressed diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of p-type. Our prediction is based on comparative studies of both Heisenberg (inherent to undistorted DMS with cubic lattice) and Ising (which can be applied to strongly enough stressed DMS) models in a random field approximation permitting to take into account the spatial inhomogeneity of spin-spin interaction. Our calculations of phase diagrams show that area of parameters for existence of DMS-ferromagnetism in Ising model is much larger than that in Heisenberg model.

Automatic tunable and reconfigurable fiberoptic microwave filters based on a broadband optical source sliced by uniform fiber Bragg gratings.

2002

We demonstrate an automatic tunable transversal notch filter based on uniform fiber Bragg gratings and a broadband optical source. High tunability can be performed by stretching the fiber with the gratings written in series. Also, high sidelobe supression can be achieved by introducing tunable attenuators in a parallel configuration of the gratings.
