Red and far-red sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence as a measure of plant photosynthesis

2015

Remote estimation of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unparalleled opportunity to track spatiotemporal variations of photosynthetic efficiency. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence that the two peaks of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum can be accurately mapped from high-resolution radiance spectra and that the signal is linked to variations in actual photosynthetic efficiency. Red and far red fluorescence measured using a novel airborne imaging spectrometer over a grass carpet treated with an herbicide known to inhibit photosynthesis was significantly higher than the corresponding signal from an equivalent untreated…

Laser cleaning of oxide iron layer : efficiency enhancement due to electrochemical induced absorptivity change

1999

Laser cleaning experiments exhibited a higher cleaning efficiency of the laser cleaning upon application of electrochemical potential on an oxidised iron surface. The objective of this study is to clarify the role of such an electrochemical control on cleaning efficiency. Therefore a study by optical spectrometry at normal incidence in the relevant conditions was performed. From these measurements the optical parameters n and k were deduced. While n is mainly not affected, k changes for a factor of 10 upon application of an electrochemical potential. These results explain the differences in laser cleaning efficiency due to the modified absorption length.

Diffusion of colloids in one-dimensional light channels

2004

Single-file diffusion (SFD), prevalent in many chemical and biological processes, refers to the one-dimensional motion of interacting particles in pores which are so narrow that the mutual passage of particles is excluded. Since the sequence of particles in such a situation remains unaffected over time t, this leads to strong deviations from normal diffusion, e.g. an increase of the particle mean-square-displacement as the square root of t. We present experimental results of the diffusive behaviour of colloidal particles in one-dimensional channels with varying particle density. The channels are realized by means of a scanning optical tweezers. Based on a new analytical approach (Kollmann 2…

Covalent and non-covalent chemistry of 2D black phosphorus

2021

The post-graphene era is undoubtedly marked by two-dimensional (2D) sheet polymers, such as black phosphorus (BP). This emerging material has a fascinating structure and outstanding electronic properties and has been postulated for a plethora of applications. The need to circumvent the pronounced oxophilicity of P atoms has dominated the research on this material in recent years, with the objective of finding the most effective method to improve its environmental stability. When it comes to chemical functionalization, the few approaches reported so far involve some drawbacks such as low degree of addition and low production ability. This review presents the concepts and strategies of our st…

Vibrational Circular Dichroism of Thiolate-Protected Au25 Clusters: Accurate Prediction of Spectra and Chirality Transfer within the Mixed Ligand She…

2019

We have prepared Au25(PET)18-2x((R)-FBI-NAS)x(PET = 2-phenylethylthiol, (R)-FBINAS = (R)-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octafluoro-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-2,2'-dithiol) mixed ligand shell clusters via ligand exchange. Two fractions with different composition of the ligand shell were separated using size-exclusion chromatography and studied by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Both IR and VCD spectra are dominated by FBINAS vibrations although PET is more abundant on the cluster. Calculated VCD spectra on a model cluster Au25(SH)16(FBINAS)1 depend on the charge state of the cluster, and the anion is in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra of the Au25(PET)18-…

Preparative, structural, and electrochemical investigations on peralkylated niobocene dichlorides and difluorides

1994

CP(dagger)2NbCl2 (CP(dagger) = 175-C5Me4Et) (1b) was synthesized from NbCl5 and a slight excess of Cp(dagger)Li and NaBH4. Its electrochemical (2 e-, E1/2 = -1.6 V) and chemical reduction (2 equiv of Na/Hg) was studied showing that peralkylation of the Cp ligand facilitates two-electron reduction compared to less substituted CP2NbHal2 derivatives. The reduced solutions of CP*2NbCl2 (CP* = C5Me5) (1a) and of lb were shown by means of EPR spectroscopy to contain two new paramagnetic species 1A,B for which bent niobocene (A(Nb) = 100 G) and fulvene-like structures (A(Nb) = 55 G) are proposed. The high reduction potential of these species led in their reaction with HPF6 to the first stable difl…

The e-ASTROGAM gamma-ray space observatory for the multimessenger astronomy of the 2030s

2018

e-ASTROGAM is a concept for a breakthrough observatory space mission carrying a gamma-ray telescope dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.15 MeV to 3 GeV. The lower energy limit can be pushed down to energies as low as 30 keV for gamma-ray burst detection with the calorimeter. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with remarkable polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the…

Chlorine partitioning in the lowermost Arctic vortex during the cold winter 2015/2016

2019

Activated chlorine compounds in the polar winter stratosphere drive catalytic cycles that deplete ozone and methane, whose abundances are highly relevant to the evolution of global climate. The present work introduces a novel dataset of in situ measurements of relevant chlorine species in the lowermost Arctic stratosphere from the aircraft mission POLSTRACC–GW-LCYCLE–SALSA during winter 2015/2016. The major stages of chemical evolution of the lower polar vortex are presented in a consistent series of high-resolution mass spectrometric observations of HCl and ClONO2. Simultaneous measurements of CFC-12 are used to derive total inorganic chlorine (Cly) and active chlorine (ClOx). The new data…
