Hydrodynamic mechanisms of spinodal decomposition in confined colloid-polymer mixtures: A multiparticle collision dynamics study

2013

A multiscale model for a colloid-polymer mixture is developed. The colloids are described as point particles interacting with each other and with the polymers with strongly repulsive potentials, while polymers interact with each other with a softer potential. The fluid in the suspension is taken into account by the multiparticle collision dynamics method (MPC). Considering a slit geometry where the suspension is confined between parallel repulsive walls, different possibilities for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions (b.c.) at the walls (slip versus stick) are treated. Quenching experiments are considered, where the system volume is suddenly reduced (keeping the density of the solvent flui…

Metallocene sulfide chemistry of niobium and tantalum: new insights into the formation of niobium-polysulfido complexes and synthesis, structure, and…

1992

The previously described reaction of Cp'2NbH3 (Cp' = t-BuC5H4) with S8 was investigated with regard to the kinetic stabilization of as yet elusive intermediates during the formation of the polysulfide complex Cp'4Nb2S9 (1). Therefore, the permethylated complex Cp*2NbS3H (2; Cp* = C5Me5) and the Ta complex Cp'2TaS2H (3) were synthesized in a related reaction and structurally investigated. Despite the problematic localization of the hydride atom during X-ray crystallographic studies, the molecules can be described in a proper manner: Characteristic of 2 and 3 are M(eta(2)-S2) cores to which either an SH (2) or a H (3) ligand is attached. Complex 3 is the first known tantalocene sulfide. It re…

Redistribution of total reactive nitrogen in the lowermost Arctic stratosphere during the cold winter 2015/2016

2021

During winter 2015/2016 the Arctic stratosphere was characterized by extraordinarily low temperatures in connection with the occurrence of extensive polar stratospheric clouds. From mid of December 2015 until mid of March 2016 the German research aircraft HALO (High Altitude and Long–Range Research Aircraft) was deployed to probe the lowermost stratosphere in the Arctic region within the POLSTRACC (Polar Stratosphere in a Changing Climate) mission. More than twenty flights have been conducted out of Kiruna/Sweden and Oberpfaffenhofen/Germany, covering the whole winter period. Besides total reactive nitrogen (NOy), observations of nitrous oxide, nitric acid, ozone and water were used f…

2,2′-Dimethyl-2,2′-(m-phenylenedimethylene)propanedinitrile

2009

The title compound, C16H14N4, features an aromatic ring with two 2,2´-dicyanopropyl residues in positions 1 and 3, which are located above and below the ring plane. The two residues differ in their conformation with respect to the aromatic ring: whereas one of the Cmethyl-C-Cmethylene-Caromatic torsion angles is gauche [68.93 (12)°], the other one is fully staggered [177.63 (9)°]. The crystal structure is stabilized by C-H...N hydrogen-bonding interactions. Key indicators: single-crystal X-ray study; T = 173 K; mean σ(C–C) = 0.002 Å; R factor = 0.037; wR factor = 0.101; data-to-parameter ratio = 15.0.

Depth profiling of Pu, 241Am and 137Cs in soils from southern Belarus measured by ICP-MS and alpha- and gamma-spectrometry

2003

The depth distribution of plutonium, americium, and Cs-137 originating front the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was investigated in several soil profiles in the vicinity from Belarus. The vertical migration of transuranic elements in soils typical of the 30 km relocation area around Chernobyl NPP was studied using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), alpha spectrometry, and gamma spectrometry. Transuranic concentrations in upper soil layers ranged from 6 x 10(-12) g g(-1) to 6 x 10(-10) g g(-1) for plutonium and from 1.8 x 10(-13) g g(-1) to 1.6 x 10(-11) g g(-1) for americium. These concentrations correspond to specific activities of Pu239+240 of…

The two cultures: Scientists and journalists, not an outdated relationship.

2013

The relationship between scientists and journalists is much better than its image. Scientists not only believe that public communication is a duty, but also that media visibility is beneficial for them. The scientific culture differs from that of journalism, which causes partly discrepant expectations; but in most cases these do not preclude satisfying interactions between journalists and scientists. The traditional relationship between science and journalism is challenged by the rise of new online media. These provide opportunities for scientists and scientific organizations to communicate directly with the public via websites, blogs and social networks. Science journalism seems to be in a…

Upper limits on the isotropic gravitational-wave background from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's third observing run

2021

We report results of a search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's third observing run (O3) combined with upper limits from the earlier O1 and O2 runs. Unlike in previous observing runs in the advanced detector era, we include Virgo in the search for the GWB. The results are consistent with uncorrelated noise, and therefore we place upper limits on the strength of the GWB. We find that the dimensionless energy density $\Omega_{\rm GW}\leq 5.8\times 10^{-9}$ at the 95% credible level for a flat (frequency-independent) GWB, using a prior which is uniform in the log of the strength of the GWB, with 99% of the sensitivity comi…
