Memorializing mass deaths at the border: two cases from Canberra (Australia) and Lampedusa (Italy)
2017
In this paper, we compare two seemingly very similar instances in which individuals and organizations within the borders of the global North have memorialized the deaths of irregular migrants at sea: the SIEV X memorial in Australia’s national capital Canberra, and the Giardino della memoria (Garden of Remembrance) on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unlike ephemeral manifestations of grief, potentially these memorials have effects that reach well beyond their creation. We relate the differences between the memorials to the contexts within which they were created: an immediate local response involving people directly affected by the disaster’s aftermath, on the one hand, and a delayed natio…

Tramping the Dirt Down: The Real and Imagined Death of Margaret Thatcher
2018
The Death of Margaret Thatcher (2008) is a play written by British playwright, Tom Green. The play, debuting at The Courtyard Theatre, London, received unsurprising criticism mainly due to its controversial and prophetic subject matter. Notably the main grievance was that Margaret Thatcher was not dead. The playwright’s prophetic and imagined version of events touched the nerves of those who supported Thatcher, and also those who derided her. This paper takes into account the preoccupation with imagining Thatcher’s death and also considers the events which took place surrounding the real death of Margaret Thatcher. Curiously, the real and the imagined are closely entwined. The paper aims to…
A Time-Non-Homogeneous Double-Ended Queue with Failures and Repairs and Its Continuous Approximation
2018
We consider a time-non-homogeneous double-ended queue subject to catastrophes and repairs. The catastrophes occur according to a non-homogeneous Poisson process and lead the system into a state of failure. Instantaneously, the system is put under repair, such that repair time is governed by a time-varying intensity function. We analyze the transient and the asymptotic behavior of the queueing system. Moreover, we derive a heavy-traffic approximation that allows approximating the state of the systems by a time-non-homogeneous Wiener process subject to jumps to a spurious state (due to catastrophes) and random returns to the zero state (due to repairs). Special attention is devoted to the cas…
Tanatologičeskaâ problematika v povesti "Zlaâ večnostʹ" Georgiâ Peskova
2018
Pod pseudonimem Gieorgij Pieskow ukrywała się Elena Dejsza, przedstawicielka „młodszego pokolenia” pisarzy pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej, autorka opowieści Zła wieczność (1932). W utworze istotne miejsce zajmuje problematyka tanatologiczna.
Spadanie i falowanie : trauma i żałoba Nicka Cave'a
2021
This article seeks to decode the artistic strategies employed by Nick Cave on two of his recent albums, Skeleton Tree (2016) and Ghosteen (2019), to process the trauma related to the sudden death of his teenage son, Arthur, in July 2015. Understandably, the literary layer of both productions is marked by the author’s grief and attempts to overcome it. However, the lyrics on both albums are also an account of a recovery from a trauma. It is a process composed of four stages: the shock experienced by an individual; desperate attempts to return to the reality before the trauma, which for obvious reasons turns out to be impossible; developing a trauma narrative, i.e. retelling a traumatic event…

Could PD-1/PDL1 immune checkpoints be linked to HLA signature?
2019
The outstanding clinical expansion of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to programmed cell death receptor-1 (PD-1) (nivolumab and pembrolizumab) and PD-1 ligand-1 (PDL-1) (atezolizumab, avelumab and durvalumab) has received an increasing level of interest regarding immunotherapy and multidrug combinations, for the treatment of a number of common human malignancies. Some patients treated with these agents receive remarkable benefits in term of quality of life, progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS). However, a significant percentage of these patients experience immune-related adverse events (irAEs), while others present with an ultra-rapid disease progression, defined as hyperprogressio…
Daily photo projects are contemporary photographic…
Nuclear localization but not PML protein is required for incorporation of the papillomavirus minor capsid protein L2 into virus-like particles.
2004
ABSTRACT Recent reports suggest that nuclear domain(s) 10 (ND10) is the site of papillomavirus morphogenesis. The viral genome replicates in or close to ND10. In addition, the minor capsid protein, L2, accumulates in these subnuclear structures and recruits the major capsid protein, L1. We have now used cell lines deficient for promyelocytic leukemia (PML) protein, the main structural component of ND10, to study the role of this nuclear protein for L2 incorporation into virus-like particles (VLPs). L2 expressed in PML protein knockout (PML −/− ) cells accumulated in nuclear dots, which resemble L2 aggregates forming at ND10 in PML protein-containing cells. These L2 assemblies also attracted…
