Decay studies ofAu170,171,Hg171–173, andTl176
2004
The $^{170,171}\mathrm{Au}$ isotopes were produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction of a $^{78}\mathrm{Kr}$ ion beam with a $^{96}\mathrm{Ru}$ target. For $^{170}\mathrm{Au}$ the proton and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ emission from the ground state were observed for the first time and the decay of the isomeric state was measured with improved accuracy. In addition, the decay of $^{171}\mathrm{Au}$ was measured with high statistics. A new $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-emitting nucleus $^{171}\mathrm{Hg}$ and the previously known $^{172}\mathrm{Hg}$ and $^{167,168,169,170}\mathrm{Pt}$ isotopes were also studied. The ground-state proton emission was identified for a new proton emitter $^{176}\mathrm{Tl}$ …
Shapes ofPb192,190ground states fromβ-decay studies using the total-absorption technique
2015
The beta decay of Pb-192,Pb-190 has been studied using the total absorption technique at the ISOLDE (CERN) facility. The beta-decay strength deduced from the measurements, combined with QRPA theoretical calculations, allow us to infer that the ground states of the Pb-192,Pb-190 isotopes are spherical. These results represent the first application of the shape determination method using the total absorption technique for heavy nuclei and in a region where there is considerable interest in nuclear shapes and shape effects.
Beta decay of $^{56}$Cu
2001
AbstractThe proton-rich isotope 56 Cu was produced at the GSI On-Line Mass Separator by means ofthe 28 Si( 32 S, p3n) fusion–evaporation reaction. Its β -decay properties were studied by detecting β -delayed γ rays and protons. A half-life of 93± 3 ms was determined for 56 Cu. Compared to theprevious work, six new γ rays and three new levels were assigned to the daughter nucleus 56 Ni. Themeasured Gamow–Teller strength values for five 56 Ni levels are compared toshell-model predictions. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. First beta-decay studies of the neutron-rich isotopes 53-55Sc and 56-59V
1998
The neutron-rich isotopes Sc53-55 and V56-59 have been produced at GANIL in interactions of a 64.5 MeV/u Cu-65 beam with a Be-9 target. They were separated by the doubly achromatic spectrometer LISE3. Beta-decay half-lives and subsequent low-energy gamma-rays were observed for the first time. The present results are compared to QRPA model predictions. The quick drop of the half-life observed at N = 33 for Ca-53(20)33 is water V-56(23)33 and absent for Sc-54(21)33, indicating a vanishing of the N = 32 subshell north to Ca-52(32). In an astrophysical context, these neutron-rich isotopes represent r-process progenitors which, after beta-decay, would produce the correlated isotopic over-abundan…
Measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay half-life of Zr-96 with the NEMO-3 detector
2010
Using 9.4 g of Zr-96 and 1221 days of data from the NEMO-3 detector corresponding to 0.031 kg yr, the obtained 2vbb decay half-life measurement is [2.35 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10^19 yr. Different characteristics of the final state electrons have been studied, such as the energy sum, individual electron energy, and angular distribution. The 2v nuclear matrix element is extracted using the measured 2vbb half-life and is 0.049 +/- 0.002. Constraints on 0vbb decay have also been set.
New lifetime measurements inPd109and the onset of deformation atN=60
2015
Several new subnanosecond lifetimes were measured in Pd-109 using the fast-timing beta gamma gamma (t) method. Fission fragments of the A = 109 mass chain were produced by bombarding natural uranium with 30 MeV protons at the Jyvaskyla Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. Lifetimes were obtained for excited states in Pd-109 populated following beta decay of Rh-109. The new lifetimes provide some insight into the evolution of nuclear structure in this mass region. In particular, the distinct structure of the two low-lying 7/2(+) states occurring systematically across the Pd isotopic chain is supported by the new lifetime measurements. The available nuclear data indicate a s…
Investigations into the alpha-decay of 195At
2003
The low-energy nuclear structure and decay properties of the neutron-deficient isotopes 195At and 191Bi have been studied. 195At was produced in the reaction 142Nd(56Fe,p2n)195At and 191Bi as the daughter activity of 195At. The activities were implanted in a position-sensitive silicon detector after being separated from the primary beam by a gas-filled recoil separator. The 1/2+ intruder state was determined to be the ground state in 195At with an alpha-decay energy of E α = 6953(3) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 328(20) ms. Another state with an alpha-decay energy E α = 7075(4) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 147(5) ms was found to decay to a 148.7(5) keV excited state in 191Bi for which a spin a…
Intruder features in the island of inversion: The case of33Mg
2001
The Na-33 beta decay was studied online using mass separation techniques and a first description of the level structure of the neutron-rich isotope Mg-33, with N=21, has been obtained. The experiment involved the measurement of beta-gamma, beta-gamma-gamma, and beta -n-gamma coincidences as well as neutron spectra by time-of-flight technique. The first low energy level scheme for the daughter nucleus Mg-33 is given with five bound states. Spin and parity assignments are proposed according to beta feedings and gamma -ray multipolarities, beta -strength distribution is evaluated, taking into account 1n- and 2n-emission channels and it is compared with the calculated GT strength distribution. …

Calculation of beta-decay properties of neutron-rich nickel isotopes
1989
Gamow-Tellerβ-decay properties of neutron-rich Ni isotopes have been calculated in the RPA with Nilsson model wave functions. On the basis of the results for the known isotopes67–69Ni, half-lives and neutron-emission probabilities for70–82Ni are predicted and compared to earlier model estimates. Possible implications onr-process nucleosynthesis are discussed.
