Human Rights Against Populism : A Progressive Response to the Politics of Duterte and Mahathir

2018

As the world celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 2018–2019, the region of Southeast Asia highlights two compelling political phenomena: the emergent ‘authoritarian populism’ of Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines and the return to the ‘Asian Values’ of Mahathir Mohamad in Malaysia. nonPeerReviewed

Przesłanki na rzecz wspólnej deklaracji w sprawie Kościoła i urzędu kościelnego. Kilka uwag na marginesie uzgodnień dialogu luterańsko-rzymskokatolic…

2020

Open dialogue as a human rights-aligned approach

2019

Throughout the last 20 years, the human rights perspective has increasingly developed into a paradigm against which to appraise and evaluate mental health care. This article investigates to what extent the Finnish open dialogue (OD) approach both aligns with human rights and may be qualified to strengthen compliance with human rights perspectives in global mental health care. Being a conceptual paper, the structural and therapeutic principles of OD are theoretically discussed against the background of human rights, as framed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, and the two recent annual reports of the Human Rights Council…

State Sovereignty: Balancing Effectiveness and Legality/Legitimacy

2018

This chapter aims to examine one of the most interesting topics in the contemporary internationalist debate, namely the crisis of effectiveness as the ultimate or sufficient criterion for achieving statehood and territorial sovereignty. Since the 1970s the perception that international law can no longer accept social reality as it is but promotes and imposes standards of justice and common values has become increasingly widespread. More recently, the ensuing discussion between realists and legalists emerged as one of the central topics addressed within the framework of the advisory procedure concerning Kosovo’s declaration of independence. By discussing and critically appraising the normati…

PNPLA3 Rs738409 C>G Variant Predicts Liver-Related Outcomes in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

2019

Background: Patients with NAFLD are at higher risk of developing liver-related complications -liver decompensation(LD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), including death-. A single nucleotide polymorphism in PNPLA3 gene is associated with a higher prevalence of liver damage and HCC, but prospective date are not available. We aimed to assess whether the common rs738409 variant in PNPLA3 gene can predict the occurrence of liver-related events and death in a large cohort of NAFLD patients.   Methods: We considered 471 consecutive Italian individuals with histological diagnosis of NAFLD or clinical diagnosis of compensated NAFLD-related cirrhosis, prospectively followed for at least 6 months. …

Worsening of pre-existing psychiatric conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic

2020

This study anonymously examined 2,734 psychiatric patients worldwide for worsening of their pre-existing psychiatric condition during the COVID-19 pandemic. Valid responses mainly from 12 featured countries indicated self-reported worsening of psychiatric conditions in 2/3rd of the patients assessed that was validated through their significantly higher scores on scales for general psychological disturbance, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Female gender, feeling no control of the situation and reporting dissatisfaction with the response of the state during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reduced interaction with family and friends increased the worsening of pre-existing psychiatri…

Phenotypic Variability and Disparities in Treatment and Outcomes of Childhood Arthritis Throughout the World: Results from the EPOCA Study

2018

Background: The characteristics and burden of childhood arthritis have never been studied on a worldwide basis. We aimed to investigate prevalence of disease categories, treatment modalities and disease status across different geographic areas. Methods: International paediatric rheumatologists were asked to enrol a consecutive sample of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Each patient underwent retrospective and cross-sectional assessments, including parent-reported outcomes. Level of disease activity and damage were correlated with wealth of the country, expressed as gross domestic product per capita. Findings: Between 2011 and 2016, 9,081 patients were enrolled at 130 centres in …

Prognostic Impact of 3-HM Concentration in Patients with Alcoholic or Viral Cirrhosis

2018

The role of endotoxemia related to intestinal bacterial translocation in worsening liver disease is the subject of many studies, but its impact on cirrhosis mortality has not been well evaluated. In this study, 3-hydroxymyristate (3-HM) (specific lipid of lipopolysaccharides) was directly quantified by an innovative patented assay with the aim of assessing the impact on cirrhosis mortality. The 3-HM concentration was measured in 593 patients with alcoholic or viral cirrhosis in stable clinical condition. A Cox hazards regression model was used to evaluate association between 3-HM and its fractions bound or nor bound to lipoprotein and the mortality. The 3-HM concentration was increased in p…

Labeling and nutritional education

2020

Abstract Nutritional food labeling has two components, a nutrient declaration on the back-of-package (usually mandatory) and supplementary simple graphical nutrition information on the front-of-package (commonly voluntary), which are aimed at assisting consumers to be aware of the nutritional value of foods in order to make healthy food choices. This is an important tool for nutritional education that can aid consumers in the fight against diet-related chronic diseases that currently constitute a global public health concern worldwide. In this chapter, the main factors involved in the use and understanding of nutrition labels by consumers, and a detailed explanation of the characteristics o…

<i>PCSK9</i> rs11591147 R46L Loss-of-Function Variant Protects Against Liver Damage in Individuals with NAFLD

2020

Background and Aims: The proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) plays a key role in cholesterol homeostasis, and its inhibition represents an effective therapy to lower LDL-C levels. In this study, we examined the impact of PCSK9 rs11591147 loss-of-function (LOF) variant on liver damage in a multicenter collection of patients at risk of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), in clinical samples and experimental models. Methods: We considered 1,874 consecutive individuals at risk of NASH as determined by histology. The SNP rs11591147, encoding for the p.R46L variant of PCSK9, was genotyped by TaqMan assays. We also evaluated 1) PCSK9 mRNA hepatic expression in human liver, and 2…
